Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry of Dye-Stuffs Originally designed to form a section of a textbook on the Technology of the d104ile Fibres, the present work was afterwards modified into a separate volume, chiefly in order to render it more accessible to chemists interested in the chemistry of dye-stuffs rather than in the dyeing and cloth printing industries. This change led to a more exhaustive treatment of the dye-stuffs, and the omission of all particulars relating to their practical application, the latter being relegated to the companion volume * dealing also with the improvement of the fibres by bleaching, etc. Only in the sections treating of natural dye-stuffs and mineral colours has more attention been paid to the technical side, because the present volume is primarily designed for the dyer's chemist. The aim in view was to provide a textbook presenting to the student in as lucid and condensed a form as possible the extremely wide domain of the modern chemistry of dye-stuffs. The number of organic compounds containing, besides carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen is very large, and by far the greater number of them are colourless. On the other hand, some compounds of carbon with these elements possess colour which far surpasses that Of any other element, both as regards intensity and character. The coloured carbon compounds Often differ little, or not at all, from the colourless ones in their percentage composition, and it is this fact which renders it certain that it is the structure of the compounds which causes in one case colour, in the other none. In the life-processes of plants and animals both colourless and coloured carbon compounds are formed, and the latter have been employed since the earliest periods as dye-materials. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Synthetic Dyestuffs and the Intermediate Products From Which They Are Derived This book is not intended to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but is designed to serve the purposes of a laboratory text-book for the use of students in the chemical laboratories of technical schools, and of colleges where technical subjects, connected with this branch of higher organic chemistry, are taught. It is-also hoped that matter will be found in it of use to chemists employed in works dealing with the synthetic dyestuffs. The need for such a book has been repeatedly pointed out to us by teachers who have control of laboratories where the usual course, only, of organic prepara tion is carried out, and who have realised the incompleteness of such a course. It was felt that, as the figures referred usually to pre war conditions in Switzerland, and having regard to the present unsettled state of the exchanges and of production costs, no good purpose would be served by attempting to give the English equivalents which, in any case, would in all probability only be misleading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Dyestuffs and Their Identification in Dyed and Coloured Materials, Lake-Pigments, Foodstuffs, Etc The great progress in the development of the Artificial Dyestuff Industry, which has marked the past half - century, has brought with it an urgent necessity for systematic methods of analysis capable of being applied not only to dyestuffs in substance but also to all manner of dyed and coloured materials, such as textile fabrics, lake pigments, paper, foodstuffs, etc. Though any desired shade can now be obtained in many different ways, the properties and fastness of the result will be dependent entirely on the dyestuffs selected. Hence arises the need in many industries for analytical investigation and control. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synthetic Colouring Matters: Dyestuffs Derived From Pyridine, Quinoline, Acridine and Xanthene Nearly four years ago, Sir Edward Thorpe asked me to write a monograph on dyestuffs of the Acridine, Xanthene, Azine and Oxazine Groups for the Series on Industrial Chemistry which he is editing. The amount of material to be dealt with appeared large for one volume and it was decided to write two books, one dealing with acridine and xanthene compounds, the other with azines and oxazines. In the course of the work it was found necessary to refer so frequently to pyridine and quinoline that the scope of the present monograph was enlarged. This seemed the more desirable on account of the interest recently taken in sensitising dyes derived from quinoline. Patent literature has necessarily been used for much of the information. It is scarcely requisite to point out to the reader that a specification does not always contain the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Much use has been made of the works of Schultz and Friedlander. With regard to the latter work my task has been very greatly facilitated by the gift of a copy of "Fortschritte der Theerfabrikation" from my old students at East London College, to whom my warmest thanks are due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Physics of Dyeing: Being an Account of the Relations Between Fibres and Dyes, the Formation of Lakes, and the General Reactions of Colloids, and Their Solution State IN the present volume an attempt is made to collect and classify the work which has been brought for ward to explain the action of dyeing, mordanting and lake formation. The general text-books on dyeing devote little space to this particular side of the question. They deal with the operations of the dye - house, rather than with the principles which seem to govern the actual practice of this branch of industry. It is the emphatic. Opinion of the writer that the indexing of organic compounds by their formulas is the Simplest, the most universal, and the clearest. Chemical Abstracts, starting with 1920, has inserted a formula index, and it is believed that chemists can find a given intermediate quicker and more surely in Chemical Abstracts by the use of this formula index than by the ordinary subject index. The formulas given here will be an aid in this direction. Furthermore a formula index is included in this book.
