Book Synopsis Chemical Safety by : Mervyn Richardson
Download or read book Chemical Safety written by Mervyn Richardson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How safe is safe enough? We live in a world that is totally dependent on chemicals, be they agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, colorants - it is vitally important that we adopt a sustainable strategy for an environment containing some 11 million chemicals. This book provides a pragmatic guide to the basic tools of chemical safety assessment, from information retrieval, through hazard and risk assessment to safety evaluation and legal aspects. It is truly global in coverage with contributors drawn from East and West, North and South. It covers natural and artificial hazards to the environment, including the potentially catastrophic effects of modern warfare, and encompasses pollution of air, water and soil as well as occupational exposure to chemicals. Everyone with a professional interest in pollution control will find this an invaluable source of information - chemists, environmental scientists, chemical engineers, political scientists, toxicologists, ecotoxicologists, in industry, academia, government departments and international agencies - all will be guided and challenged by the wealth of knowledge it contains.

Book Synopsis Safe Science by : National Research Council
Download or read book Safe Science written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent serious and sometimes fatal accidents in chemical research laboratories at United States universities have driven government agencies, professional societies, industries, and universities themselves to examine the culture of safety in research laboratories. These incidents have triggered a broader discussion of how serious incidents can be prevented in the future and how best to train researchers and emergency personnel to respond appropriately when incidents do occur. As the priority placed on safety increases, many institutions have expressed a desire to go beyond simple compliance with regulations to work toward fostering a strong, positive safety culture: affirming a constant commitment to safety throughout their institutions, while integrating safety as an essential element in the daily work of laboratory researchers. Safe Science takes on this challenge. This report examines the culture of safety in research institutions and makes recommendations for university leadership, laboratory researchers, and environmental health and safety professionals to support safety as a core value of their institutions. The report discusses ways to fulfill that commitment through prioritizing funding for safety equipment and training, as well as making safety an ongoing operational priority. A strong, positive safety culture arises not because of a set of rules but because of a constant commitment to safety throughout an organization. Such a culture supports the free exchange of safety information, emphasizes learning and improvement, and assigns greater importance to solving problems than to placing blame. High importance is assigned to safety at all times, not just when it is convenient or does not threaten personal or institutional productivity goals. Safe Science will be a guide to make the changes needed at all levels to protect students, researchers, and staff.

Book excerpt: In this practical guide, we assume that: - The substance is classified and registered under REACH, and you have received a safety data sheet with exposure scenarios. - You know how to check the exposure scenarios for a substance that you have received from your supplier in order to meet your obligations under REACH. - You have established that your specific use of the substance and/or conditions of use are not covered by the exposure scenarios received for that substance, or that the use is advised against. - You are aware of the options available to you when your use/conditions of use are not covered, namely to: - ask your supplier to include your use within the identified uses and provide an ES for your use; or - implement conditions of use described in the ES from your supplier; or - replace the substance or process with a safer alternative; or - change supplier; or - prepare a DU CSR. - You intend to prepare a DU CSR to cover your use of the substance, or are considering that as an option. - You are aware of the exemptions that apply, such that a DU CSR is not required.

Book Synopsis The History of Alternative Test Methods in Toxicology by :
Download or read book The History of Alternative Test Methods in Toxicology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-10-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Alternative Test Methods in Toxicology uses a chronological approach to demonstrate how the use of alternative methods has evolved from their conception as adjuncts to traditional animal toxicity tests to replacements for them. This volume in the History of Toxicology and Environmental Health series explores the history of alternative test development, validation, and use, with an emphasis on humanity and good science, in line with the Three Rs (Replacement,Reduction, Refinement) concept expounded by William Russell and Rex Burch in 1959 in their now classic volume, The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The book describes the historical development of technologies that have influenced the application of alternatives in toxicology and safety testing. These range from single cell monocultures to sophisticated, miniaturised and microfluidic organism-on-a-chip devices, and also include molecular modelling, chemoinformatics and QSAR analysis, and the use of stem cells, tissue engineering and hollow fibre bioreactors. This has been facilitated by the wider availability of human tissues, advances in tissue culture, analytical and diagnostic methods, increases in computational processing, capabilities, and a greater understanding of cell biology and molecular mechanisms of toxicity. These technological developments have enhanced the range and information content of the toxicity endpoints detected, and therefore the relevance of test systems and data interpretation, while new techniques for non-invasive diagnostic imaging and high resolution detection methods have permitted an increased role for human studies. Several key examples of how these technologies are being harnessed to meet 21st century safety assessment challenges are provided, including their deployment in integrated testing schemes in conjunction with kinetic modelling, and in specialized areas, such as inhalation toxicity studies. This book was released on 2016-08-07 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of State charged the Academies with the task of producing a protocol for development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) that would serve as a complement to the Chemical Laboratory Safety and Security: A Guide to Prudent Chemical Management and be included with the other materials in the 2010 toolkit. To accomplish this task, a committee with experience and knowledge in good chemical safety and security practices in academic and industrial laboratories with awareness of international standards and regulations was formed. The hope is that this toolkit expansion product will enhance the use of the previous reference book and the accompanying toolkit, especially in developing countries where safety resources are scarce and experience of operators and end-users may be limited.

Download or read book Chemical Safety Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The REACH Regulation1 is based on the principle that it is for the industry to ensure that the substances they manufacture, place on the market or use do not adversely affect human health and the environment. Within REACH, the chemical safety assessment plays a major role since it is the instrument to ensure that all risks are identified and under control. This guidance document provides an overview of what a chemical safety assessment is and how it is performed and documented. It also outlines the communication needs down the supply chain and the resources required, in terms of time and expertise, to comply with the legal obligations. The purpose of the document is to assist industry in understanding the general provisions for conducting a chemical safety assessment. The document is aimed at non-experts who want to become familiar with the legal requirements regarding substance assessment.
