Book excerpt: In modern Britain, the working class has become an object of fear and ridicule. From Little Britain’s Vicky Pollard to the demonization of Jade Goody, media and politicians alike dismiss as feckless, criminalized and ignorant a vast, underprivileged swathe of society whose members have become stereotyped by one, hate-filled word: chavs. In this acclaimed investigation, Owen Jones explores how the working class has gone from “salt of the earth” to “scum of the earth.” Exposing the ignorance and prejudice at the heart of the chav caricature, he portrays a far more complex reality. The chav stereotype, he argues, is used by governments as a convenient figleaf to avoid genuine engagement with social and economic problems and to justify widening inequality. Based on a wealth of original research, Chavs is a damning indictment of the media and political establishment and an illuminating, disturbing portrait of inequality and class hatred in modern Britain. This updated edition includes a new chapter exploring the causes and consequences of the UK riots in the summer of 2011.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book sets out to examine the concept of 'chav', providing a review of its origins, its characterological figures, the process of enregisterment whereby it has come to be recognized in public discourse, and the traits associated with it in traditional media representations. The author then discusses the 'chav' label in light of recent re-appropriations in social network activity (particularly through the video-sharing app TikTok) and subsequent commentary in the public sphere. She traces the evolution of the term from its use during the first decade of the twenty-first century to make sense of class, status and cultural capital, to its resurgence and the ways in which it is still associated with appearance in gendered and classed ways. She then draws on recent developments in linguistic anthropology and embodied sociocultural linguistics to argue that social media users draw on communicative resources to perform identities that are both situated in specific contexts of discourse and dynamically changing, challenging the idea that geo-sociocultural varieties and mannerisms are the sole way of indexing membership of a community. This volume contends that equating 'chav' with 'underclass' in the most recent uses of the concept on social networks may not be the whole story, and the book will be of interest to sociocultural linguistics and identity researchers, as well as readers in anthropology, sociology, British studies, cultural studies, identity studies, digital humanities, and sociolinguistics.

Book excerpt: The divine Shiraz Bailey Wood is back in this hilarious sequel to Diary of a Chav to enlighten us with her signature brand of madcap humor on her demented, glorious life in the gritty suburbs of London. Chav: (n.): 1. A word that makes most Brits think of hoodies, hip hop, bling, and trouble. (It ain't a good fing, bruv.) At the end of the school year, 16-year-old Shiraz Bailey Wood isn't expecting incredible grades. But when her test results come in, she's astonished to discover that not only did she pass them all, but that she's also actually clever! Emboldened by an invite to higher-level classes, Shiraz decides she can't waste her brain power frying eggs for minimum wage at the greasy spoon Mr. Yolk. So even in spite of her Mum's objections that it ain't her place, Shiraz enrolls in Superchav Academy's "Center of Excellence" to get even brainier. Setting forth into the heady field of academia and hanging out with other boffin types seems like just the ticket to avoid getting stuck living like a chav forever in crappy Goodmayes Essex. Smooth-talking lads with whopping allowances tempt her-but Shiraz has to figure out: are these posh types really any better? Or maybe being a chav might not be all that bad-as long as it stands for Charming, Hilarious, Articulate, and Vibrant.

Book excerpt: "A very clear and engaging introduction to a contemporary analysis of 'race' and racism(s). This text effectively combines key theoretical perspectives with vivid contemporary examples." - Dr Rebecca Barnes, University of Derby "Fantastic book for helping students get past the stuntedness of the term 'racism' to understand the way in which racisms are part of our social practices and institutions. - Dr Lucy Michael, Hull University "This is a solid text, covering the topic in a thoughtful manner. Studying and teaching racism is a complex issue, and this book is a very good resource." - Dr Sanjay Sharma, Brunel University We hear much about 'race' and 'racism' in public discourse but the terms are frequently used without clear definitions or practical examples of how these phenomena work. Racisms: An Introduction introduces practical methods which enable students to think coherently and sociologically about this complex feature of the global landscape. Steve Garner argues that there is no single monolithic object of analysis but rather a plural set of ideas and practices that result in the introduction of 'race' into social relations. This differs over time and from one place to another. Focussing on the basics, this book: Defines 'race', 'racism', 'institutional racism' and 'racialization'. Provides examples of how these function in fields like the natural sciences and asylum. Clearly sets out theoretical arguments around collective identities ('race', class, gender, nation, religion). Uses empirical case studies, including some drawn from the author's own fieldwork. Points students toward sources of further web and text based information. Engaging and accessible this book provides a signposted route into key elements of contemporary debates. It is an ideal introduction for undergraduates studying 'race' and ethnicity, social divisions and stratification.

"Chav Christianity is personal, practical and powerful. Darren roots the book in his own life story, makes a strong and well researched argument for the importance of mission amongst the working-class, and reminds us that when the gospel takes root in working-class communities the effect will be truly transformational." Matt Wilson, author of Eden: Called to the streets "Edgy, gutsy and real - from an author that is passionate about connecting with community and who understands that in order for a tree to flourish it does not have to deny its roots." John Glass, General Superintendant of the Elim Movement "Darren is a unique man - full of passion and zeal for Jesus. He is not frightened to 'represent' Jesus and see God's kingdom built in his surroundings and time. After knowing Darren for a short period he has had a positive and infectious effect on me." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral Panics in the Contemporary World represents the best current theoretical and empirical work on the topic, taken from the international conference on moral panics held at Brunel University. The range of contributors, from established scholars to emerging ones in the field, and from a working journalist as well, helps to cover a wide range of moral panics, both old and new, and extend the geographical scope of moral panic analysis to previously underrepresented areas. Designed from the outset to comprise a coherent and integrated set of viewpoints which share a common engagement with critically exploring moral panics in the contemporary world, it contains case studies instantly recognisable and familiar to a student readership (drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse and racism). The collection brings a fresh approach to analysis and argument by testing and extending the concept of moral panic and analyzing a range of topics and geographical contexts, accurately reflecting the state-of-the-art moral panics research today.
