Book Synopsis The MotoLady's Book of Women Who Ride by : Alicia Mariah Elfving
Download or read book The MotoLady's Book of Women Who Ride written by Alicia Mariah Elfving and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written and curated by Alicia Mariah Elfving, founder of TheMotoLady.com and the Women’s Motorcycle Show, and arguably the most notable advocate for women in the motorcycling hobby, The MotoLady's Book of Women Who Ride subverts all the tired women-and-motorcycle tropes, offering the true stories of the women past and present who ride and wrench as well as anyone, proving every bit as indispensable to maintaining and growing a positive motorcycling culture. Historically, depictions of women in motorcycle culture tend to objectify—from the outlaw motorcycle club “biker babe” to cheesecake photography to posturing celebrities with motorcycles as props. The truth is much different. From the early days of motorcycle culture more than 100 years ago, women have played a central role in making the motorcycle a legitimate form of transportation, recreation, and motorsport. Elfving presents more than 70 figures in the motorcycle world, from the Americas to Europe and even the Middle East and South Asia—stunt riders, racers, builders, customizers, organizers, and more. Elfving links today’s women motorcyclists with those of the past and illustrates the freedom represented by two wheels, and how motorcycles allow women to transcend cultural expectations confidently. You'll meet riders such as: Sofi Tsingos, who raises money for charities by building and auctioning motorcycles. Safety ambassador Brittany Morrow, who found her calling after surviving a high-speed crash with no gear. The Van Buren sisters, who in 1916 were among the first motorcyclists to ride coast to coast and the first women to ride to the summit of Pikes Peak. The late Jessi Combs, an iconic TV personality, metal fabricator, and land-speed record holder. Overwhelmingly positive, Elfving instills confidence and can-do rather than providing an echo chamber of common complaints among women in motorcycling. In addition, The MotoLady's Book of Women Who Ride is illustrated throughout with contemporary and historical photos of the author’s subjects, comprising a beautiful as well as inspiring package.
Book Synopsis Top Gear Drives of a Lifetime by : Dan Read
Download or read book Top Gear Drives of a Lifetime written by Dan Read and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, Top Gear dispatches correspondents to cover many serious stories around the world. Wherever they go, they ask tough questions and leave no stone unturned in search of the cold, hard truth. Questions such as: Is it possible to drive a Ferrari up a Scottish ski slope? Exactly how far can you drive a bulldozer across the Antarctic before it falls down a big crack? And what happens when you drive a small 4X4 up a volcano, during an earthquake, with a high chance of eruption? The answers to all of the above – and more – can be found in Top Gear Top Drives, a new book featuring Top Gear’s best adventures, neatly arranged in precise geographic order: top, middle and bottom. These are not Sunday drives to country pubs. You will not find any mentions of freshly cut grass and picnics under oak trees. In fact, you are more likely to encounter roadside landmines and a pack of Chilean llamas with a relaxed approach to personal hygiene. Of course you will also find supercars on winding mountain passes, but this book goes much further, bringing you the most unusual combinations of car and tarmac – or lack of it – from across our planet. All of which are accompanied by a surprisingly useful collection of travel tips, featuring such useful advice as when to go, what the weather’s like and where to find a reasonably priced beer. Like any classic travel guide, you really shouldn’t leave home without it. Unless you write down the really important bits, in which case you’ll probably be OK.

Book Synopsis Marabout Women in Dakar by : Amber B. Gemmeke
Download or read book Marabout Women in Dakar written by Amber B. Gemmeke and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich ethnographic study explores the life and work of successful marabout women in Dakar. It is set against the background of their private family lives, of developments in Senegalese society, and of global changes. While including female experts in spirit possession and plant-based healing, it also gives a rare insight in the work of women who offer Islamic knowledge such as Arabic astrology, numerology, divination and prayer sessions. With the analysis of marabout women's work this study sheds light on the ways in which women's authority in esoteric knowledge is negotiated, legitimated, and publicly recognised in Dakar. The study focuses especially upon marabout women's strategies to gain their clients' trust. Reference to rural areas is a significant element in this process. This study thus contributes to an understanding of the gendered way in which trust and scepticism are related to marabouts' work and of the role of a connection between Dakar and the rural areas therein.
