Book excerpt: The authors present three analyses on charmonium production using 89 fb[sup -1] of e[sup +]e[sup -] collision data collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring operating at the [Upsilon](4S) at SLAC. A precise measurement of the [eta][sub c] total width is obtained from a study of the invariant K[sub s][sup 0]K[sup [+-]][pi][sup [-+]] mass spectrum for a sample of [eta][sub c] mesons produced in two-photon interactions. The total width of the J/[psi] meson is measured using initial state radiation e[sup +]e[sup -] [yields] [mu][sup +][mu][sup -][gamma] events. Finally branching fraction measurements for the exclusive B meson decays B[sup 0] [yields] J/[psi] p[bar p] and B[sup +] [yields] J/[psi] p[bar [Lambda]] are presented.

Investigation of the properties of new states like the X(3872), Y(3940) and Y(4260) are performed aiming to understand their nature. Recent BaBar results will be presented in this paper. At the B-factories charmonium and charmonium-like states are copiously produced via several mechanisms: in B decay (color suppressed b 2!c transition), double charmonium production (ee− 2!c{bar c} + c{bar c}), two photons production ([gamma]*[gamma]* 2!c{bar c}, where the c{bar c} state has positive C-parity) and in initial state radiation (ISR) when the e{sup {+-}} in its initial state emits a photon lowering the effective center of mass energy of the ee− interaction (e+e− 2![gamma]{sub ISR} + c{bar c}, where the charmonium state has the quantum numbers J{sup PC} = 1−2). Many new states have been recently discovered at the B-factories, BaBar and Belle, above the D{bar D} threshold in the charmonium energy region. While some of them appear to be consistent with conventional c{sub c} states others do not fit with any expectation. Several interpretations for these states have been proposed: for some of them the mass values suggest that they could be conventional charmonia, but also other interpretations like D°{bar D}*° molecule or diquark-antidiquark states among many other models have been advanced. Reviews can be found in Refs. [1][2]. In all cases the picture is not completely clear. This situation could be remedied by a coherent search of the decay pattern to D{bar D}, search for production in two-photon fusion and ISR, and of course improving the statistical precision upon the current measurements. The BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric collider, designed to perform precision measurement of CP violation in the B meson system, has an extensive quarkonium spectroscopy program. Recent BaBar outcomes on the X(3872) and Y(4260) and a new result on the Y(3940) are reported here.

The [eta]{sub c} and [eta]{sub c}(2S) are produced in [gamma][gamma] interactions: a precision measurement of their mass and total width is reported, together with a study supporting the correct assignment of the [eta]{sub c}(2S) quantum numbers. Two states D*{sub sJ 2317}, D{sub sJ 2457} are observed in continuum e+e− production, decaying to D{sub s}+ [pi]°[gamma] respectively: their masses are measured and a study on the resonant structure of the D{sub sJ}+(2457) decay is reported. All results are preliminary.

The first section of the thesis describes the observation of a candidate for the chi_b(3P) bottomonium states. This represented the first observation of a new particle at the LHC and its existence was subsequently confirmed by D0 and LHCb experiments. The second part of the thesis presents measurements of the prompt and non-prompt production of the chi_c1 and chi_c2 charmonium states in proton-proton collisions. These measurements are compared to several theoretical predictions and can be used to inform the development of theoretical models of quarkonium production.

The Belle observations of the enhancements in the?(2S)?− and?{sub cl}?−, i.e. the Z(4430)−, Z1(4050)−, and Z2(4250)−, have generated a great deal of interest, because such states must have minimum quark content (c{bar c}d{bar u}), i.e. these are four-quark states. The BABAR Collaboration does not confirm the existence of the Z(4430)−.
