Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters: With Illustrationd From Photographs It has been thought that all the works published under the names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, were, in reality, the production of one person. This mistake I endeavored to rectify by a few words of disclaimer prefixed to the third edition of "Jane Eyre." These, too, it appears, failed to gain general credence, and now, on the occasion of a reprint of "Wuthering Heights" and "Agnes Grey," I am advised distinctly to state how the case really stands. Indeed, I feel myself that it is time the obscurity attending those two names - Ellis and Acton - was done away. The little mystery, which formerly yielded some harmless pleasure, has lost its interest; circumstances are changed. It becomes, then, my duty to explain briefly the origin and authorship of the books written by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. About five years ago, my two sisters and myself, after a somewhat prolonged period of separation, found ourselves reunited, and at home. Resident in a remote district, where education had made little progress, and where, consequently, there was no inducement to seek social intercourse beyond our own domestic circle, we were wholly dependent on ourselves and each other, on books and study, for the enjoyments and occupations of life. The highest stimulus, as well as the liveliest pleasure we had known from childhood upwards, lay in attempts at literary composition; formerly we used to show each other what we wrote, but of late years this habit of communication and consultation had been discontinued; hence it ensued that we were mutually ignorant of the progress we might respectively have made. One day, in the autumn of 1845, I accidentally lighted on a MS. volume of verse in my sister Emily's handwriting. Of course I was not surprised, knowing that she could and did write verse: I looked it over, and something more than surprise seized me, - a deep conviction that these were not common effusions, nor at all like the poetry women generally write. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters Scots blood, there is no evidence that there was a particle of blood other than Irish flowing in the veins of Patrick Branty. His parents were of the peasant class, although his father, Hugh Brunty, would seem to have followed for a long period a number of varied occupations, including work in a limekiln and work in a cornkiln. The book to which we owe the only glimpse of Patrick's par entage, The Brontes in Ireland, by Dr. Wright, is so full of invention that it is diflicult to derive therefrom fragments of truth concerning the ear lier Brontes, or Bruntys. It would seem clear, how ever, that Hugh Brunty married one Alice Mc Clory, who had been brought up in the Roman Catholic faith, but who, after her marriage in the Protestant Church of Magherally, adopted the re ligion of her husband.1 Ten children were born to Hugh and Alice Brunty, and of these Patrick, the eldest, alone has any interest for us. After such education as the village school af forded, young Patrick Brunty became a weaver. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In a letter to Miss Wooler, dated January 27 th, 1858, Charlotte Bronte wrote: "Villette is to be published to-morrow. Its appearance has been purposely delayed hitherto, to avoid discourteous clashing with Mrs. Gaskell's new work." The story was received, as its writer's friend and biographer tells us, "with one burst of acclamation"; but the laudatory notices only served to make the author's heart "swell with thankfulness to Him who takes note both of suffering, and work, and motives." But it seemed fated that each of her books should bring with it some jar in friendship or some disappointment in expectation. "Jane Eyre was the centre of a very vortex of discussion; "Shirley" touched for its writer the weakness in Greorge Henry Lewes's character; and now "Villette" brought forth a review in the Daily News which disappointed her in Harriet Martineau. Each wrote at least one novel that would go on to become a classic and to be read by women everywhere throughout history. Charlotte Bront , the eldest of the three Bront sisters, wrote multiple novels that are still ranked among the most cherished books in literature. Shirley, the novel completed after Jane Eyre, was written during a period of immense turmoil in Charlotte's life. These personal dramas affected both the feel and the outcome of the novel. Set around the War of 1812, Shirley is a glimpse of the industrial unrest in Britain. This novel also examines the gender expectations of women in society. While in other books Charlotte chooses a first person narrator, Shirley stands out for its use of a third person omniscient narrator who gives more voice to the struggles of all individuals during this period of time. Perhaps one of the most intriguing elements of this story is the friendship between Shirley and Caroline which gives the reader insight into the relationship that Charlotte had with her sisters. Another strength of this novel is Charlotte's use of minor characters who each bring their own unique personalities into the story and ripen it with entertainment. Charlotte's master craft of writing engaging characters and dramatic events make all of her novels enchanting. Her ability to dissect societal issues, while also creating an appealing story line makes her novels intriguing and timeless. It's no surprise that these works have become literary classics. Take a moment to read these amazing works that have stood against the test of time and proven themselves worthy. This handsome leather-bound edition includes the most acclaimed novels of each of the Brontë sisters: Charlotte’s Jane Eyre, Emily’s Wuthering Heights, and Anne’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Originally published under male pseudonyms in the 1840s, these three novels later helped give rise to the feminist literary movement of the late nineteenth century, in which women’s perspectives became more accepted by the mainstream reading public. A scholarly introduction provides an overview of the sisters’ childhood in northern England, their literary influences, and their enduring legacy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë The Bronte sisters published aw, in 1846, a little volume of verse with tire erie - Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. This, however, was only a selection from their manuscripts, and much remained. Charlotte Bronte, in 1850, after the death of her sisters, Emily and Anne, revised their novels, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, for a second edition. She included in this edition a few poems selected from the mass of their manuscripts. In the Preface to these volumes, dated September 19, 1850, she tells of the circumstance under which their first volume was published, and in a note to the poetical selections she apologizes for printing the poems which included some of Emily's, written when quite young and says. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle Dear miss nussey, - We had not seen the article in Sharpe, and very possibly should not, if you had not directed our attention to it. We ordered a copy, and have now read the Few Words about Jane Eyre. The writer has certainly made many mistakes, but apparently not from any unkind motive, as he professes to be an admirer of Charlotte's works, pays a just tribute to her genius, and in common with thousands deplores her untimely death. His design seems rather to be to gratify the curiosity of the multitude in reference to one who had made such a sensation in the literary world. But even if the article had been of a less harmless character, we should not have felt inclined to take any notice of it, as by doing so we should have given it an importance which it would not other wise have obtained. Charlotte herself would have acted thus; and her character stands too high to be injured by the state ments in a magazine of small circulation and little influence statements which the writer prefaces with the remark that he does not vouch for their accuracy. The many laudatory notices of Charlotte and her works which appeared since her death may well make us indifferent to the detractions of a few envious or malignant persons, as there ever will be such. The three Victorian Era authors gave rise to a new wave of female authors by publishing their popular books first under male pseudonyms, then using their real names when they became successes. During lives marked by death, abandonment, and isolation, the three sisters kept each other company and formed a writing troupe that would create some of the most influential and memorable works of their time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Jane Eyre + Wuthering Heights (2 Unabridged Classics)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Charlotte Brontë's most beloved novel describes the passionate love between the courageous orphan Jane Eyre and the brilliant, brooding, and domineering Rochester. The loneliness and cruelty of Jane's childhood strengthens her natural independence and spirit, which prove invaluable when she takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall. But after she falls in love with her sardonic employer, her discovery of his terrible secret forces her to make a heart-wrenching choice. Ever since its publication in 1847, Jane Eyre has enthralled every kind of reader, from the most critical and cultivated to the youngest and most unabashedly romantic. It lives as one of the great triumphs of storytelling and as a moving and unforgettable portrayal of a woman's quest for self-respect. Born into a poor family and raised by an oppressive aunt, young Jane Eyre becomes the governess at Thornfield Manor to escape the confines of her life. There her fiery independence clashes with the brooding and mysterious nature of her employer, Mr. Rochester. But what begins as outright loathing slowly evolves into a passionate romance. When a terrible secret from Rochester's past threatens to tear the two apart, Jane must make an impossible choice: Should she follow her heart or walk away and lose her love forever? Considered by many to be Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece, Jane Eyre chronicles the passionate love between the independent and strong-willed orphan Jane Eyre and the dark, impassioned Mr. Rochester. Having endured a lonely and cruel childhood, orphan Jane Eyre, who is reared in the home of her heartless aunt prior to attending a boarding school with an equally torturous regime, is strengthened by these experiences.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Brontë and Her Sisters This book may seem at first sight only an untoward accident, due to the exigencies of including all well known names in a series entitled "Literary Lives." Mrs. Gaskell, it may be said, wrote the only Life of Charlotte Bronte that everyone should read. This is, in a measure, true, but much new material has been published since Mrs. Gaskell wrote, and this material has not in the interval been gathered together into one brief narrative. I have to thank Messrs. Hodder & Stoughton for any facts of that kind previously published in my Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle, and Messrs. Smith Elder & Co. for the same indulgence with regard to the Haworth Edition of Mrs. Gaskell's Life, to which I was privileged to add many notes. Book excerpt: The wonderful classic Jane Eyre by world renowned author Charlotte Bronte is an absolute must read for all ages. It was first published in 1847 and has been a firm favourite with readers worldwide ever since. Charlotte was born in 1816 and resisted the conventional ideas of Victorian society, attending Cambridge University before settling in Yorkshire as a parson. Her mother and two older sisters died when she was young, leaving her to tend for her two younger sisters Emily and Anne, and her brother Branwell. The premature ending to her childhood left Charlotte hardened and strong willed which helped fuel her determination in writing. Her father was also a great influence to her and her siblings as he often indulged his children in allowing them to freely read his books and educated them in the ways of the political news. This left them very well informed on such matters and this is noticeable in their articulate writing. The book follows the story of Jane Eyre and her romantic interest, Rochester, in an unusual and dramatic plot. As with all her books Bronte continually questions and opposes the stereotypical view of women in Victorian society and uses her spirited protagonists to spearhead her attack on such labels. It is an inspirational and interesting book by a brilliant author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illustrated Letters of the Brontës is the story both of the real world of the Brontës at Haworth Parsonage, their home on the edge of the lonely Yorkshire moors, and of the imaginary worlds they spun for themselves in their novels and poetry. Wherever possible, their story is told using their own words – the letters they wrote to each other, Emily and Anne's secret diaries, and Charlotte's exchanges with luminaries of literary England – or those closest to them, such as their brother Branwell, their father Patrick Brontë, and their novelist friend Mrs Gaskell. The Brontës sketched and painted their worlds too, in delicate ink washes and watercolours of family and friends, animals and the English moors. These pictures illuminate the text as do the tiny drawings the Brontë children made to illustrate their imaginary worlds. In addition, there are facsimiles of their letters and diaries, paintings by artists of the day, and pictures of household life. It is a unique and privileged view of the real lives of three women, writers and sisters.
