Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Dickens as Editor: Being Letters Written by Him to William Henry Wills, His Sub-Editor Tm; letters printed in this volume were written by Charles Dickens to my great-uncle, William Henry Wills, who first became closely connected with him at the time of the foundation of the Daily News in 1846, and was afterwards for nearly twenty years his sub editor on Household Words and All the Year Round. With the exception of a certain number (relatively small) which have already appeared in whole or in part in the three volumes of the Letters of Charles Dickens published by Miss Hogarth and Miss Dickens in 1880 and 1882 these letters are new.* They were carefully preserved by Wills, and at his death passed to his widow. She left them to her niece, Lady Priestley, from whose eldest son, my cousin Mr. R. C. Priestley, they have now come to me. I desire to express my warm thanks to Miss Hogarth and Mr. H. F. Dickens, k.c., for their permission to publish this selection from the 450 letters in my possession. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This project offers the first critical guide to over a million words of vintage Dickens, which have been much overlooked in continuous assessments and re-assessments of his novels. It provides both a biographical and socio-historical account of the main phases of Dickens's career as a journalist, and a critical assessment of the thematic and stylistic development of his work.

His famous plays are - ‘A Tale of two cities', 'No Thorough fare’, ‘The Frozen Deep’. ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ is an historical novel. It narrates the story of the French Doctor Manette and his 18-year-long imprisonment in Paris. When he released from his imprisonment he left for London. The two cities are in London only. Actually the first plot deals with the rebirth of Dr. Manette and about those situations and reasons for French Revolution by the lower classes and the Reign of Terror. The author asserts his belief in the possibility of transformation. The plot of second book narrates trial on Charles Darnay on the charges of treason against the British Crown. But the lawyer of Darnay is very intelligent and proves that the faces of Darnay and his friend Sydney Cartona resemble eachother, on this ground Darnay is acquitted. The plot of the 3rd one is- when Darnay arrives in Paris, he is jailed due to his illigal emigration. But after one and half year, Darnay gets acquitted due to Dr. Monette. In all, the novel seems very interesting and readers will surely enjoy the details about French Revolution.
