Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Manipulation of the Avian Genome contains the most recent information from leading research laboratories in the areas of developmental and molecular genetics of the chicken. This information was presented at the Keystone Symposium held at Lake Tahoe in March, 1991. The book discusses potential applications of emerging technology in basic science and poultry production. Various techniques for altering genomic DNA, such as microinjection, retroviral vectors, and lipofection are covered. Genome evaluation using DNA fingerprinting and conventional breeding techniques are presented.

Book excerpt: The Second International CBT (Center for Biotechnology) Synposium was held in Stockholm November 4-5 1988 and had the title "The steroid/thyroid hoITIDne receptor family and gene regulation". This meeting contained contributions from most leading laboratories within the field of steroid/thyroid hOITIDne receptors and gave a very exciting perspective on the dynamic development of this i:ntx>rt. ant research field. Today all known steroid hoITIDne receptors have been cloned and sequenced and novel members of this supergene family are constantly being discovered. Sane of these new receptors remain to be characterized regarding the nature of their ligand. Access to probes for steroid receptors has enabled studies on mechanisms of regulation of receptor gene expression. Deletion and II'Altational analysis of steroid receptor cDNAs followed by expression in cells together with suitable reporter genes has yielded a detailed knowledge about the functional significance of the various domains the receptors are composed of. In certain cases, steroid resistance in patients have been shown to be due to point mutations in the corresponding steroid receptor genes resulting in non-functional receptors. The availability of receptor cDNAs also makes it possible to express receptors at high levels in procaryotic and eucaryotic cells. It is e. g. possible to express the DNA-binding domain of the glucocorticoid receptor in E. coli as a fusion protein with protein A which interacts specifically with DNA. Such studies are necessary for production of sufficient quantities of receptors to allow crystallization and X-ray crystallography for detailed structural information.

Book excerpt: Cytochromes P450: Metabolic and Toxicological Aspects examines cytochrome P450 proteins and their role in toxicity/carcinogenicity and the metabolism of foreign chemicals. Studying the function of these proteins enables us to: Predict the pathways and outcome of chemical metabolism to rationalize species, sex, and age differences in toxicity Anticipate drug interactions Modify doses to fit the needs of patients Contributions from internationally acknowledged experts are organized into three sections. The first section provides an overview, the next profiles each of the cytochrome P450 families and subfamilies involved in chemical metabolism, and the last section discusses new issues and developments of current interest. This detailed and thorough examination of cytochrome P450 will be a useful source for research scientists, especially those working in the pharmaceutical industry, dealing with the safety evaluation of chemicals and the study of their metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and toxicological properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume XIV is a compendium of papers dealing with DNA regulatory elements, leukotriene receptors, hormonal regulation of sodium-proton exchange activity, the structure of the mammalian progesterone receptor, stimulus-response, and signaling systems. One paper analyzes the hormonal factors that regulate the kinetic properties of the plasma membrane Na+ -H+ exchanger in epithelia and relates the control mechanisms to specific physiological function. Aqueous two-phase partitioning is a method that can be used in the study of steroid receptor activation and other conversions or interactions of steroid receptors. Using the two-phase partitioning, one can form a model of molecular changes during activation based on changes in the steroid receptor physico-chemical properties associated with the activation in vitro-phase. Another paper investigates the hypothesis that early androgenic modulation of nuclear effector-independent PKs is intimately related to the initial events in androgenic control of gene expression in the prostate. One paper describes the interaction between the estrogen receptor with DNA and the mechanism of transcription regulation by steroid receptors. Another paper reviews the role of GTP-binding proteins in receptor-mediated activation of phospholipase C, the formation and metabolism of novel inositol phosphates, as well as the possible role of protein kinase C in signal modulation. Micro-biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, cellular biologists, and investigators in the field of cell research will find this collection useful.

Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes which aim to cover all established eukaryotic transcription factor systems that are direct targets for the signal transduction pathways. Leading molecular biologists contribute reviews on topics which take a broad view, and which should be of interest to students and advanced researchers in biology and medicine. Chapters attempt to answer such fundamental questions as: what is the signal and how and when is it produced? What is the receptor, and what further signalling molecules are involved? What is the biochemistry and molecular biology of the transcription factor that is the ultimate target of the signalling pathway? What is the physiological role of factor?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a wide-ranging review of the variety and specificity of receptors, including those for neurotransmitters, hormones, growth factors, oncogenes and antigens, and looks in depth at the fundamental features of multi-subunit complexes and their vital role in coordinating and controlling the functions of the body. These receptors for hormones and drugs are mostly constituted from protein subunits. They may be organised as ligand-operated ion channels in a cell membrane or they may be concerned with enzyme activation to generate second messengers or DNA transcription following a change in the association-disassociation state of the receptor complex. Advances at the molecular level have enabled scientists to relate the structure of these receptor subunits to their specific mode of action and their function and this in turn is leading the way forward to exciting new research with important medical consequences for the treatment of disease. The fourteen chapters in this volume summarise these advances across a wide range of disciplines and the resulting publication will therefore be of interest to research scientists in endocrinology, immunology, pharmacology, oncology and neurobiology.
