Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic instabilities remain a key design concern faced in the development of liquid rocket engines. The interaction between the acoustic modes and the occurring combustion reactions can be detrimental to the engine. The fluctuating pressure waves resulting from the flame oscillations in the system can potentially lead to engine failure. For this reason, research in acoustic instabilities and methods to minimize the influences on the engine, has maintain interest in the aerospace community. The scope of this study was to design, optimize and characterize acoustic behaviors of a scaled rocket combustion chamber simulating acoustic pressure waves. Tangential and longitudinal acoustic waves of the system were extracted and validated through analytical and computational fluids dynamics models. The results of this study will assist with the process of extracting dominant oscillation frequencies of a system essential in the design of acoustic suppression devices for attenuation of critical frequencies.

Book excerpt: November, 2008 Anna Schwarz, Johannes Janicka In the last thirty years noise emission has developed into a topic of increasing importance to society and economy. In ?elds such as air, road and rail traf?c, the control of noise emissions and development of associated noise-reduction techno- gies is a central requirement for social acceptance and economical competitiveness. The noise emission of combustion systems is a major part of the task of noise - duction. The following aspects motivate research: • Modern combustion chambers in technical combustion systems with low pol- tion exhausts are 5 - 8 dB louder compared to their predecessors. In the ope- tional state the noise pressure levels achieved can even be 10-15 dB louder. • High capacity torches in the chemical industry are usually placed at ground level because of the reasons of noise emissions instead of being placed at a height suitable for safety and security. • For airplanes the combustion emissions become a more and more important topic. The combustion instability and noise issues are one major obstacle for the introduction of green technologies as lean fuel combustion and premixed burners in aero-engines. The direct and indirect contribution of combustion noise to the overall core noise is still under discussion. However, it is clear that the core noise besides the fan tone will become an important noise source in future aero-engine designs. To further reduce the jet noise, geared ultra high bypass ratio fans are driven by only a few highly loaded turbine stages.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamic noise has been a problem since the first use of the jet engine for military aircraft in World War II. For further uses of the jet engine to be possible, problems due to jet noise must be researched and addressed. Anechoic chambers were proposed as a testing facility for research in aerodynamic noise because of their supposed free-field characteristics. The international standard ISO 3745-1977 was introduced to determine whether the facilities could be considered anechoic, semi-anechoic, or neither. An experiment was designed to determine at what frequencies the National Center for Physical Acoustics' Jet Lab Facility is non-anechoic, semi-anechoic, or anechoic. To comply with the guidelines of ISO 3745- 1977, three sources were designed and tested at frequencies from 25 Hz to 16000 Hz. The voltages were acquired at each frequency to calculate the sound pressure level and determine if the calculated values are within the allowed tolerance of the inverse square law.
