Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This naturalistic historic case study investigated the contributions of the deans of the Porter University School of Nursing from 1972 to 2010. Despite a shortage of nurses and nursing faculty, nursing school deans are being required to oversee a radical transformation of nursing education to address major health care issues. An historical overview of nursing education and the evolution of the role of the nursing dean were discussed. The study's three research questions included, (a) How did the leadership succession process impact the deans' contributions? (b) How did policy, dean leadership, organizational culture, gender, and organizational lifecycle impact the contributions of the deans? (c) What were the contributions of the deans of the Porter University School of Nursing to institutional advancement from 1972 to 2010? The purposive sample included nine of the ten living deans of the school and nine faculty representing the tenure of each of the deans. Pseudonyms protected participant anonymity. Semi-structured interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, coded, categorized, and themes identified. Trustworthiness was confirmed. The study findings supported prior research on leader succession which found various factors in an individual's background, including past experiences of education and succession origin among others, make that individual more likely to be a good fit for an organization and more likely to make positive contributions to the organization. Five factors including policy, dean leadership, organizational culture, gender, and organizational lifecycle and the organizational culture sub-factors of dean background, school location, Baptist identity, and southern identity all impacted, some more than others, the contributions of the deans. The significance and number of contributions of the deans were somewhat dependent on the time period in the school's history in which they served. Future research may include a written history of the Porter University School of Nursing and an investigation of whether or not there is a difference in the organizational culture in a religious-affiliated school of nursing from that in other types of institutions such as independent, public, and/or for-profit.
