Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Spanish Literature The vast progress made in all departments of literary scholarship, and the minuteness with which knowledge is now subdivided, threaten to leave the general reader bewildered at the diversity and bulk of what is presented to him. The exact historian of literature concentrates his attention on so narrow a field that he cannot be expected to appeal to a wide class; those who study what he writes are, or must in some measure grow to be, his fellow-specialists. But the more precisely each little area is surveyed in detail, the more necessary dees it become for us to return at frequent intervals to an inspection of the general scheme of which each topo graphical study is but a fragment magnified. 'it has seemed that of late the minute treatment of a multitude of intellectual phenomena has a little tended to obscure the general movement of literature in each race or country. In a crowd of handbooks, each of high authority in itself, the general trend of influence or thread of evolution may be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Magic in Spanish Literature, Vol. 38 The earliest account comes from Ibn Habib, an hispano-arabic writer of the latter part of the eighth century who tells us that at Toledo Musa found a sacred house of Kings in which there were twenty-five crowns, each inscribed with the name of a Visi gothic King. Near this house was another one furnished with twenty-four locks, one of which had been added by each suc cessive king until Rodrigo came to the. Throne. Filled with curiosity to see what was within this bolted house, Roderick broke open the locks in spite of the warnings of the priests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Literature: A Primer IT is now nearly twenty-five years since I first published A History of Spanish Literature. It naturally had the limitations of the time at which it was written but it had the advantage, if advantage it were, of representing a personal knowledge of Campoamor, Valera, Nunez de Arce, Pereda, and especially Menendez y Pelayo. This will explain in part the measure of success which the book Obtained. In other respects the volume in its Spanish version owed some of its vogue to the fact that it was adopted in the Universities of Spain. But a work which was suitable for natives would scarcely meet the needs of foreign beginners. It was accordingly resolved to publish a Primer which should meet some of these needs at the same time that it expressed the views set down here. There are a certain number of points which would not be familiar even to natives, such as the absence of metrical system that characterizes the early Spanish cantares de gesta and the veering to the opposite extreme under Boscan's leadership. The suitability of the present little book for foreigners is, it may be hoped, possibly considerable, if the last twenty years of my life have not been altogether wasted in teaching Spanish in English Universities. It is not sur prising that a Primer of the History of Literature should be in demand in the case Of the language which, after English, is spoken by a larger number of people than any other speech of the West. We cannot pretend that we have discovered half as much as we should like about the arcana of Spanish Literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Spanish Literature Theatre. - Influence Of The Church And The Inquisition. - Mysteries. - Castillejo, Oliva, Juan De Paris, And Others. - Popular Demands For Dramatic Literature. - Lope De Rueda. - His Life, Comedias, Coloquios, Pasos, And Dialogues In Verse. - His Character As Founder Of The Popular Drama In Spain. - Juan De Timoneda. The theatre in Spain, as in most other countries of modern Europe, was early called to contend with formidable difficulties. Dramatic representations there, perhaps more than elsewhere, had been for centuries in the hands of the Church; and the Church was not willing to give them up, especially for such secular and irreligious purposes as we have seen were apparent in the plays of Naharro. The Inquisition, therefore, already arrogating to itself powers not granted by the state, but yielded by a sort of general consent, interfered betimes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations Between Spanish and English Literature It is no marvel of adroit arrangement. If the interlude was meant to be played on the boards, there is justification for condensing the first four acts of the Spanish book into one act the substitution of a happy ending for the tragedy of the original is a feeble and fatal concession to Philistinism. It has been suggested that the adaptor added his morall conclusion and exhortacyon to vertew' out of deference to Vives. Assuming that he knew Vives (of which there is no proof), this wouldoexplain his tamperings: it is no excuse for them. Yet enough of the original survives to lend the English interlude a permanent historical interest. The New Commodye breaks with the allegorical tradition, introduces human beings on the stage instead of abstractions, and prepares the way for a drama of character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Readings In Spanish Literature As there are chronological coincidences of literary productions between Spain and England, so there are corresponding coin cidences of comparative sterility. The eighteenth century is a desolate period in each country; national spirit had sunk to a low point in Spain as in England, and French taste governed the leaders of literary fashion in both lands. Production at this time is thin and uninspired, and the reaction of romanticism was almost a necessity, if literature were to survive at all. It is not for us to estimate the attainments of Blake, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron and Scott, or to compare the literary gifts of each of these men with those of their conceivable Spanish compeers. Be it enough to note that, while England is perhaps somewhat more advanced in point of time, there has been no real solution of continuity in Spain where the romantic spirit has never died out since the heyday of her literary renown. Sufficient proof of this will, possibly, be found in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of modern Spanish culture, tracing its dramatic and often unexpected development from its beginnings after the Revolution of 1868 to the present day. Specially-commissioned essays by leading experts provide analyses of the historical and political background of modern Spain, the culture of the major autonomous regions (notably Castile, Catalonia, and the Basque Country), and the country's literature: narrative, poetry, theatre and the essay. Spain's recent development is divided into three main phases: from 1868 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War; the period of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco; and the post-Franco arrival of democracy. The concept of 'Spanish culture' is investigated, and there are studies of Spanish painting and sculpture, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and the modern media. A chronology and guides to further reading are provided, making the volume an invaluable introduction to the politics, literature and culture of modern Spain.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on Spanish Literature: Containing Its History, From the Commencement of the Twelfth Century, to the Present Time; With an Account of the Best Writers, in Their Several Departments, and Some Critical Remarks The unanimous accord of Europe, especially of Germany, a country which has just yielded its testimony to the literary acquirements and eminent qualifications that distinguish your Excellency, is a sufficient reason why I should refrain from expatiating upon talents already known and admired, while it exempts me from the accusation of flattery, an accusation always excited by Authors' praises, however unequal they may be to the merit which awakened them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain of the Spanish I have said, somewhere in the chapter on Literature, that a true realist must set aside his personal thoughts and feelings and content himself with stating facts. But then one cannot state facts unless one knows them, and one cannot know a Country and a People unless one is in sympathy with them. And the parent of sympathy is understanding, just as the parent Of understanding is trust. And so we find ourselves once again appreciating that most splendid quality of the Spaniard to which I have above alluded! It is very possible that here and there in these pages English readers may find ideas and sentiments with which they are not in accord, but always the title Of the book must be remembered. Spain of the English is not at all the same thing as Spain of the Spanish! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
