Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Readings In Spanish Literature As there are chronological coincidences of literary productions between Spain and England, so there are corresponding coin cidences of comparative sterility. The eighteenth century is a desolate period in each country; national spirit had sunk to a low point in Spain as in England, and French taste governed the leaders of literary fashion in both lands. Production at this time is thin and uninspired, and the reaction of romanticism was almost a necessity, if literature were to survive at all. It is not for us to estimate the attainments of Blake, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron and Scott, or to compare the literary gifts of each of these men with those of their conceivable Spanish compeers. Be it enough to note that, while England is perhaps somewhat more advanced in point of time, there has been no real solution of continuity in Spain where the romantic spirit has never died out since the heyday of her literary renown. Sufficient proof of this will, possibly, be found in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature is by far the most comprehensive work of its kind ever written. Its three volumes cover the whole sweep of Latin American literature (including Brazilian) from pre-Colombian times to the present, and contain chapters on Latin American writing in the USA. Volume 3 is devoted partly to the history of Brazilian literature, from the earliest writing through the colonial period and the Portuguese-language traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and partly also to an extensive bibliographical section in which annotated reading lists relating to the chapters in all three volumes of The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature are presented. These bibliographies are a unique feature of the History, further enhancing its immense value as a reference work.

Book excerpt: Presenting the development of the modern Spanish novel from 1600 to the present, this Companion draws on the combined legacies of Don Quijote and the traditions of the picaresque novel. Essays focus on invention and experiment and examine the role played by historical events and cultural contexts in the Spanish novel's evolution. Including a chronology and guide to further reading, the survey reveals the innovative techniques characterizing the Spanish novel as well as the debates surrounding it.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Spanish-American Literature The purpose of the present volume is to introduce to Eng lish readers a continental culture that they have too long neglected. Not that we have been alone in our neglect; Spain itself, the mother nation of Spanish America's grow ing republics, has until very recently ignored the letters of its numerous offspring. Owing to the meager acquaintance that our reading pub lic has with spanish-american literature, a book of purely critical essays is at this time inadvisable; I have, there fore, in the following chapters, greely mingled excerpts, exposition and a modicum of criticism, in the hope of thus providing an incentive for further delving into the authors and the books commented upon. Whatever criticism I have written has been determined by a flexible attitude, I have sought to suggest rather than to define. Book excerpt: The diverse countries of Latin America have produced a lively and ever evolving tradition of novels, many of which are read in translation all over the world. This Companion offers a broad overview of the novel's history and analyses in depth several representative works by, for example, Gabriel García Márquez, Machado de Assis, Isabel Allende and Mario Vargas Llosa. The essays collected here offer several entryways into the understanding and appreciation of the Latin American novel in Spanish-speaking America and Brazil. The volume conveys a real sense of the heterogeneity of Latin American literature, highlighting regions whose cultural and geopolitical particularities are often overlooked. Indispensable to students of Latin American or Hispanic studies and those interested in comparative literature and the development of the novel as genre, the Companion features a comprehensive bibliography and chronology and concludes with an essay about the success of Latin American novels in translation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Spanish Literature Last summer the Trustees of the Hispanic Society of America did me the honour to invite me to give a course of lectures on Spanish literature in the United States, and almost at the same time an invitation to lecture on the same subject reached me from the Provost of University College, London. The chapters contained in the present volume are the result. The lectures on the Cid, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderon, and Modern Spanish Novelists were delivered during the autumn and winter of 1907 at the University of Columbia; some of these were repeated at Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania, and Yale Universities; some at Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, and Smith's College (northampton, Massachusetts); and the whole series was given this spring at University College, London.
