Surveying 2000-Shanghi area residents and villagers as well as 2500 US citizens, the authors examine to what extent there has been a loss of "traditional" values in the United States. The book looks at value systems in both cultures associated with family relationships, kinship ties, male-female relationships, and general interpersonal relationships - the fundamental social relationships comprising the social fabric of a society. The authors conclude that although both societies have experienced changes in this century, they have followed quite different paths. In exploring the extent to which this process has differed, the authors address the following questions: what traditional Confucian values persist in China after 40 years of communist indoctrination and the recent "invasion" of Western culture? How are fundamental human relationships viewed in the United States? How do these two societies differ today, both in adherence to traditional values and in the dynamics of value change? Conversely, as America has changed from traditional values to a society of permissive values, original traditional values are disappearing and replaced by the more permissive values of the 21st century. The Statue of Liberty on the front cover reflects this change away from traditional values as a “Culture Shock”, noted by the open mouth in astonished realization of value change. The torch in the right uplifted hand is replaced by a cocktail glass of Martini with three olives representing the holy trinity drowning in alcohol. The tablet in the left hand is the Communist Manifesto which has replaced the Constitution as the US moves from democracy toward socialism. America values are changing and headed for an end to American Culture of the founding fathers. American is in “Culture Shock”.

The paper includes a preliminary consideration of the mythicization of the American West and its reflection in popular culture, particularly film. It culminates in an analysis of two Western genre films, John Ford’s "Stagecoach" (1939) and Tommy Lee Jones’ "The Homesman" (2014), to evaluate whether enduring genre conventions and myths about Native Americans remain prevalent. Diese Lektürearbeit untersucht die Mythen und Realitäten in der Darstellung des amerikanischen Westens in der Populärkultur, mit einem besonderen Fokus auf die Repräsentation der indigenen Völker.
