Book Synopsis Factors Affecting Recreation Participation by Vermont Residents by : Thomas A. More
Download or read book Factors Affecting Recreation Participation by Vermont Residents written by Thomas A. More and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term recreation planning requires an understanding of recreation participation patterns. This study examined Vermonters' participation in 27 leisure activities from three domains (outdoor, resource based, and indoor) to see how such participation differed in each domain. Indoor activities were the most popular, followed by resource-based activities and general outdoor activities. Overall participation declined with age, though this effect was mitigated somewhat for older parents. Other socioeconomic and demographic variables had limited effects on participation.

Book Synopsis Timber Value Growth Rates in New England by : David A. Gansner
Download or read book Timber Value Growth Rates in New England written by David A. Gansner and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Rates of growth in the value of standing timber can vary greatly from stand to stand and from tree to tree. In Maine, the compound annual rate of change in stand value between the two most recent forest inventories ranged from -12 to +43 percent. Faced with this kind of variation, forest managers can use help in determining financial rates of return for their woodland. From analyses of forest inventory data we have developed guides for estimating value growth potential for trees in New England. S3.

Book Synopsis Regionally Averaged Diameter Growth in New England Forests by : Robert B. Smith
Download or read book Regionally Averaged Diameter Growth in New England Forests written by Robert B. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A regional sample of tree-ring measurements was used to determine average annual growth in trees of 10 major species in New England. There have been extended periods of decreasing growth rates in red spruce since about 1960 and in balsam fir since about 1965. The other eight species, which included sugar maple and white pine, showed constant or increasing growth rates through 1980. The decreases in growth rate in sampled red spruce and balsam fir were independent of physical site characteristics, elevation, and geographic location, indicating that regional factors are involved. Weather parameters and indexes were not closely correlated with growth rates, and the best predictive equation explained only 33 percent of annual variation. Due to past harvests and epidemics of the spruce budworm, much of the red spruce-balsam fir forest below 1,000 m in elevation can be considered to be functioning as even-aged. Historical growth information suggests that these trees should have reached maximum growth around 1960, and that decreasing growth rates since then are the result of normal aging.

Book Synopsis Forest Decline and Atmospheric Deposition Effects in the French Mountains by : M. Kaennel

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest decline became a matter of public and scientific concern in France in 1983 when conifers in the Vosges mountains were found to exhibit unusual crown deterioration. An impassioned controversy on a supposedly large scale forest health problem was then in full swing in Central Europe. A co-ordinated research programme entitled DEFORPA ("Deperissement des For~ts et Pollution AtmospMrique") was launched in 1984. This programme ran from 1984 to 1991 and a number of projects are still in progress. The Programme was sponsored by three French ministries (Enviroument, Agriculture and Forestry, Research and Technologyl), several state agencies, various regional authorities and the Commission of the European Communities (DO xn and DG VI). Initially, emphasis was solely laid on the understanding of forest decline in the mountainous areas - because damage was most obvious there - in relation to natural and man-made factors. Air pollution was given high but not overwhelming priority. Thus, the DEFORPA Programme was not in its essence a nation-wide assessment of air pollution effects, unlike a number of national acidification research programmes in Europe and North America. During. the programme, however, the areas of concern expanded. In particular, research into water acidification in the Vosges mountains was developed in parallel with the DEFORPA Programme, and possible eutrophication of the ground flora in northeastern France became the subject of new research.

Book Synopsis Assessing the Impacts of Climate Change on Natural Resource Systems by : Kenneth D. Frederick
Download or read book Assessing the Impacts of Climate Change on Natural Resource Systems written by Kenneth D. Frederick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume characterizes the current state of natural science and socioeconomic modeling of the impacts of climate change and current climate variability on forests, grasslands, and water. It identifies what can be done currently with impact assessments and suggests how to undertake such assessments. Impediments to linking biophysical and socioeconomic models into integrated assessments for policy purposes are identified, and recommendations for future research activities to improve the state of the art and remove these impediments to model integration are provided. This book is for natural and social scientists with an interest in the impacts of climate change on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and their socioeconomic impacts, and policy makers interested in understanding the status of current assessment capabilities and in identifying priority areas for future research.
