Download or read book The Public Role In The Dairy Economy written by Alden C Manchester and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, governments play a part in the milk business for compelling economic reasons and not, as many assert, just because dairy farmers are numerous and organized. This book examines the role of federal, state, and local governments in the dairy economy of the United States, where major public involvement in industry began during the Great Depression. Dr. Manchester considers the conditions in the 1930s that led to government involvement, the changes that have occurred in the industry and the public role since then, and the prospects for the 1980s and beyond. He also analyzes possible alternative public dairy policies for the present and the rest of the decade. Many things have changed, points out Dr. Manchester, but the fundamental conditions that led to public involvement in the dairy industry still exist.

Book excerpt: Changes in climate that intensify drought and accelerate the spread of livestock parasites and diseases darken the economic future for sub-Saharan pastoralists. Already stressed, as industrial and urban development narrow their access to pastures and water for their animals, many pastoralists face a bleak choice: abandon their livestock and their cultural heritage or die. In Uganda, however, the outlook for pastoralists is becoming much brighter. Thousands of pastoralists in Uganda point the way toward a better option: commercial milk production.

Download or read book Milk Money written by Kirk Kardashian and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2012 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retail milk prices have stayed the same while milk prices paid to farmers have plummeted. The dairy business is at the heart of the culture and economy of Vermont and many other states. Kirk Kardashian asks whether it is right that family farmers in America should toil so hard, produce a food so wholesome and so popular, and still lose money. His investigation uncovers the hidden forces behind dairy farm consolidation and asks why milk -- a staple commodity subject to both government oversight and industry collusion -- has proven so tricky to stabilize. Meanwhile, every year we continue to lose scores of small dairy farms.

Book Synopsis U.S. Dairy Farming and Demand by : Keith Lennon
Download or read book U.S. Dairy Farming and Demand written by Keith Lennon and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial stress encountered by dairy farmers in recent years has led Congress and the industry to reconsider how to deal with fluctuations in milk prices and financial prospects for dairy farmers. Some Members have voiced interest in alternatives to current federal programs (which expire in 2012). Alternative policies could either be incorporated into the next omnibus farm bill or enacted separately before expiration. The dairy industry is currently developing or advocating a variety of policy changes. This book examines dairy policy options for the next farm bill which are loosely categorized as either supply management, market-based, or tiered-pricing. These proposals have implications for U.S. dairy farmers, competitiveness of the U.S. dairy industry, and international trade.

Book Synopsis Udder Health and Communication by : H. Hogeveen
Download or read book Udder Health and Communication written by H. Hogeveen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In dairy industries throughout the world there is a desire to optimize udder health. An improved udder health will lead to improved animal welfare, improved production efficiency and a reduction of the use of antibiotics. To improve udder health, first of all, technical knowledge on issues such as treatment, milking, infectious pressure and host resistance is important. However, over the years we learned that knowledge alone is not enough: knowledge has to be used. And for knowledge to be used, farmers have to be motivated. This requires knowledge about motivation and communication. In this book, recent knowledge on technical udder health issues is combined with knowledge on motivation and communication. A large number of descriptions of mastitis control programs that are being carried out worldwide is combined with more specific studies. These are aimed at effective advising, motivation and communication strategies, economics, and technical studies on mastitis control and prevention. Therefore, this book provides an applied source of information for all that are willing to improve udder health.
