Book excerpt: What does it mean when decision making has speeded up beyond imagining? When life and work are fused rather than relegated to their own places and times? What about the impact of the serial career on industries built with the expectation that they were training employees for the long haul? Based on unique research and interviews, The Change Agents is a clear-eyed examination of what living in a wired world really means to organizational behavior and individual empowerment. The media has been full of stories of the dizzying ascents and fast falls of dot-commers over the last few years, but The Change Agents shows how the rest of the world -- from top CEOs to the guys in the mailroom -- is irrevocably affected by a paradigm shift as wrenching as the industrial revolution. Nickles has identified a self-empowered group she labels "Change Agents" who are demanding more power in the workplace than previous generations were granted after years with a company - and they are getting it. The Change Agents shows how they do it and why it matters. Backed by exclusive statistical research and scores of personal interviews, Faster Forward is a revealing and significant look at the future for everyone who works today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Tech and High Heels in the Global Economy is an ethnography of globalization positioned at the intersection between political economy and cultural studies. Carla Freeman’s fieldwork in Barbados grounds the processes of transnational capitalism—production, consumption, and the crafting of modern identities—in the lives of Afro-Caribbean women working in a new high-tech industry called “informatics.” It places gender at the center of transnational analysis, and local Caribbean culture and history at the center of global studies. Freeman examines the expansion of the global assembly line into the realm of computer-based work, and focuses specifically on the incorporation of young Barbadian women into these high-tech informatics jobs. As such, Caribbean women are seen as integral not simply to the workings of globalization but as helping to shape its very form. Through the enactment of “professionalism” in both appearances and labor practices, and by insisting that motherhood and work go hand in hand, they re-define the companies’ profile of “ideal” workers and create their own “pink-collar” identities. Through new modes of dress and imagemaking, the informatics workers seek to distinguish themselves from factory workers, and to achieve these new modes of consumption, they engage in a wide array of extra income earning activities. Freeman argues that for the new Barbadian pink-collar workers, the globalization of production cannot be viewed apart from the globalization of consumption. In doing so, she shows the connections between formal and informal economies, and challenges long-standing oppositions between first world consumers and third world producers, as well as white-collar and blue-collar labor. Written in a style that allows the voices of the pink-collar workers to demonstrate the simultaneous burdens and pleasures of their work, High Tech and High Heels in the Global Economy will appeal to scholars and students in a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, cultural studies, sociology, women’s studies, political economy, and Caribbean studies, as well as labor and postcolonial studies.

Book excerpt: Change is hard. You know that if you've stayed stuck in a lousy relationship, an unsatisfying career, or you can't give up an unhealthy habit or you're still in some other depressing life circumstances because you're afraid that making a change might make things worse. So like many, you too may have decided to stick with the devil you know rather than risk making a change and having to confront a devil you don't know. But if you're finally ready to face these fears and change your life, career, relationship (or just about anything else), have you considered working with your own Personal Coach? If not, this book might just convince you to do so. Whether you've considered working with a coach--or not, or whether you've worked with your own personal coach in the past, or even if you have no idea what a personal coach is, the message of compassion, hope, support and transformation that is at the core of the practical, easy-to-digest advice given by the 7 Certified Professional Coaches (CPC) in Change Agents in High Heels will resonate with you. It answers questions such as: What does a Coach Do? What can a Coach Do for me? How is a Coach different than a therapist? What does working with a coach cost? How do I find the right coach for me? And, more... By demystifying the coaching process and providing realistic, frank, and specific examples of what you can expect from working with your own personal coach, Change Agents in High Heels make it easy for you to find the help you need to make difficult life changes without having to be labeled crazy, lazy or sick. The 7 Certified Professional Coaches and co-authors of Change Agents in High Heels are from a wide variety of backgrounds, including research and academia, beauty and fitness, corporate executive, and conflict-resolution. Altogether these coaches have spent more than 50-years helping people transform their lives (as well as transforming their own). Using tested and proven theories, methods, strategies, and tools, they boast an impressive record of transformative success for a long list of individual and group clients that include entrepreneurs, business professionals, and authors to organizations, corporations, government institutions, and non-profit institutions. Coaches and clients both give the book high praise, saying things like: "Whether you're working with a coach, thinking of hiring one, or have no idea what a coach does, you'll get something out of this book." "Just following the one surprising advice about how much importance to place on certification in choosing a coach is enough to prevent disappointment and save you an unnecessary amount of wasted time and money." "Read the book if you're a coach - the reminders will always help you remember why you wanted to become a coach. Read it if you're thinking of hiring a coach - it's an excellent guide and truly shows the breadth of coaching available. The depth of commitment and caring coaches have for their clients is invaluable - where else will you find such a guide on your path to be your absolute best? Find a coach. They help. I know. How? Because I have one (and I am one)." So if you're sick and tired of putting up with that conflict-ridden relationship or going to that depressingly unrewarding job; or if you want to get rid of those blood-sucking clients who are draining your energy and driving you broke; or if you're finally ready to start that business that you've been dreaming about forever; or, if you just want to drop that belly fat that makes you feel so disgusted with yourself, or something else, then get this book. Use it to find the perfect personal coach to help YOU! Use it to start transforming your life, your business, your career, your relationships (or just about anything else)-with the help of your own personal coach. Get it now and let the transformation begin."

Book excerpt: This book provides the first systematic examination of the relationship of hegemony and power. Nine essays delve into the diverse analytical aspects of the two concepts, and an introduction and conclusion by the editors, respectively, forge a synthesis of their theoretical coherence. Hegemony has long existed as a term in political science, international relations, and social theory, but its meaning varies across these fields. While each has developed its own 'local' language games for treating the idea, they all conceptualize hegemony as a form of power. Building on the recent rigorous exposition of power, this book subjects hegemony to a clarifying debate. In doing so, it advances the power debate. Components of the literature assume a relationship between power and hegemony, but no previous work has performed a concentrated and consistent analytical examination of them until now.

Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which a diverse group of feminist and participatory action researchers experience, create meaning, and respond to the challenges of engaging in collaborative processes of reflection, action, and change. While headed in similar directions, rarely have feminist researchers and participatory action researchers acknowledged each other as collaborators with mutually important contributions to the journey. Through the work presented in this volume, the contributors hope to influence feminist scholarship to be more participatory and action-oriented, and participatory action research to be more grounded in feminist theories and values. This book has two distinct yet interrelated and intertwining aims. First, it creates a space for a diverse group of educators, researchers, and scholars to grapple with the multiple and complex issues that are threaded throughout feminist and action research. Second, it seeks to examine how action research and feminist research can complement each other in developing strategies for engaging in collaborative research that is rooted in activism and productive change.

Book excerpt: Best Fifteen Books of March 2019, Refinery29 Best Nonfiction Books of 2019, Paste Magazine Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Fetishized, demonized, celebrated, and outlawed, the high heel is central to the iconography of modern womanhood. But are high heels good? Are they feminist? What does it mean for a woman (or, for that matter, a man) to choose to wear them? Meditating on the labyrinthine nature of sexual identity and the performance of gender, High Heel moves from film to fairytale, from foot binding to feminism, and from the golden ratio to glam rock. Summer Brennan considers this most provocative of fashion accessories as a nexus of desire and struggle, sex and society, violence and self expression, setting out to understand what it means to be a woman by walking a few hundred years in her shoes. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2022 PORCHLIGHT LEADERSHIP & STRATEGY BOOK OF THE YEAR A transformational book for trying times, Dare to Un-Lead will challenge the way you think and feel about the role of leadership in your life. What is revered as leadership today is often nothing more than a destructive set of obsolete behaviors and systems evolved from the centuries-old industrial theories popularized by Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford. This mode of leadership harms individuals and societies and must be reinvented to better reflect the way we live, trade, and work in the 21st century. Dare to Un-Lead explores how contemporary organizations can transform leadership from a top-down hegemony to one that empowers people to lead together through the concepts of liberty, equality, and community. Kotter affiliate and global engagement leadership specialist Céline Schillinger combines her experience enacting digital-enabled, people-focused collective work practices in global corporate structures with a deep analysis of leadership—studied through multiple lenses and timely sources of knowledge—to provide original insights into why these practices work. The result is a series of evidence-based approaches for reinventing collective performance across organizations in a post-pandemic world. From large corporations to small businesses, the lessons learned in this landmark book, implemented individually and collectively over time, will make our workplaces more equal, our jobs more gratifying, and our economies more profitable. And that will make the world a better place.

Book excerpt: For fans of Mindhunter, Criminal Minds, and My Favorite Murder, a riveting memoir of a trailblazing woman’s life hunting down serial killers as one of the first female profilers of the FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit and the real-life model for Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs. “Jana Monroe is the single most influential woman to ever serve in the FBI.” —Joe Navarro, bestselling author of What Every BODY Is Saying Jana Monroe was no ordinary cop. One of the first analysts—and, at the time, the only female agent—in the world-renowned FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit at Quantico, she consulted on more than 850 homicide cases, including infamous serial killers Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Edmund Kemper, and Aileen Wuornos. Monroe was also the model for Clarice Starling in the movie version of The Silence of the Lambs; she even helped train Jodie Foster for her Oscar-winning role. Monroe’s later years found her dealing with the aftermath of Columbine, heading up the FBI’s post-9/11 investigation in Las Vegas, and much more. In Hearts of Darkness, Monroe steps out from the shadows to tell the story of her astonishing life in shaping law enforcement and intelligence analysis. Monroe explores the cases that have stayed with her, breaking down victimology, offering new insight into the minds of serial killers, and discussing the psychological toll of the job and the obstacles she faced as a woman in the male-dominated Bureau. This is a gripping, sometimes gruesome, and always remarkable memoir of an unparalleled life and career spent chasing the monsters among us.
