Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work will examine chamber works involving up to 12 players which include the E-flat soprano clarinet. Doubling parts, defined as B-flat and E-flat clarinet on one part for one performer, will be included only if the E-flat clarinet is present for one or more entire movements. The intent is to show that this lesser-known repertoire includes numerous and varied works which are both unique and distinctive. No extant literature on this subject is currently available. The importance of playing auxiliary instruments cannot be emphasized enough as competition and demand increase in today's professional performing climate; therefore, I believe the subject to be of value as a source for those performers who wish to broaden their knowledge of the literature and increase their career viability. It is hoped that this paper will become a vital addition to the store of clarinet repertoire which is catalogued at this time. The examination of this music will be primarily from a performance perspective, and will include in-depth discussion of the points of interest and challenges of the most prominent works. Included is an annotated bibliography, providing a complete list of the repertoire with brief synopses. Detailed background information will also be presented, delving into such areas as composers' inspiration (why choose the E-flat clarinet?), their other works of the same period, premiere performances and possible dedicatees, and other significant influences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my research, I examine orchestral and chamber music calling for E-flat and bass clarinet doubling to be performed by one clarinetist and analyze pieces requiring the use of both clarinets. My argument is built through an analysis of fourteen scores calling for this doubling and an accompanying catalogue of chamber and orchestral pieces that require the doubling. I examine these fourteen pieces to determine the level of virtuosity a clarinetist should have on both auxiliaries. I also interviewed and surveyed composers and clarinetists to gain a better understanding of the expectations professionals maintain regarding both E-flat and bass clarinet performance. The knowledge gained from the clarinetists shows how their proficiency on both E-flat and bass clarinet has influenced careers over the past several decades. Similarly, composers' responses indicate their expectations for the performance of E-flat and bass clarinet by a single clarinetist in the 21st century. My research will show that the career benefits of playing both E-flat and bass clarinet, the prevalence of the doubling repertoire, and the expectations of composers for doubling clarinetists results in a novel need for the inclusion of E-flat and bass clarinet pedagogy in institutions of learning.

Book excerpt: The clarinet has a long and rich history as a solo, orchestral, and chamber musical instrument. In this broad-ranging account Eric Hoeprich, a performer, teacher, and expert on historical clarinets, explores its development, repertoire, and performance history. Looking at the antecedents of the clarinet, as well as such related instruments as the chalumeau, basset horn, alto clarinet, and bass clarinet, Hoeprich explains the use and development of the instrument in the Baroque age. The period from the late 1700s to Beethoven's early years is shown to have fostered ever wider distribution and use of the instrument, and a repertoire of increasing richness. The first half of the nineteenth century, a golden age for the clarinet, brought innovation in construction and great virtuosity in performance, while the following century and a half produced a surge in new works from many composers. The author also devotes a chapter to the role of the clarinet in bands, folk music, and jazz.
