Book Synopsis Biblical Interpretation by : John M. Court
Download or read book Biblical Interpretation written by John M. Court and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a valuable resource book for historical studies on biblical interpretation, comprising a variety of detailed essays, including documented examples of important stages in the history of biblical exegesis. It also contains a general introduction to the history of reading the Bible. Falling into three parts, from the New Testament to the Reformation, from the Reformation to the modern period, and readings of the Bible today and in the future, the book is designed to challenge some present-day assumptions of the uniformity of approaches to the Bible and of modes of exegesis. It illustrates that basic continuities do exist, and informs the student and non-specialist of the long tradition of reading the Bible to which we are heirs, with the aim of making us more competent interpreters ourselves.
Book Synopsis Romantic Writing and the Empire of Signs by : Karen Fang
Download or read book Romantic Writing and the Empire of Signs written by Karen Fang and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century periodicals frequently compared themselves to the imperial powers then dissecting the globe, and this interest in imperialism can be seen in the exotic motifs that surfaced in works by such late Romantic authors as John Keats, Charles Lamb, James Hogg, Letitia Landon, and Lord Byron. Karen Fang explores the collaboration of these authors with periodical magazines to show how an interdependent relationship between these visual themes and rhetorical style enabled these authors to model their writing on the imperial project. Fang argues that in the decades after Waterloo late Romantic authors used imperial culture to capitalize on the contemporary explosion of periodical magazines. This proliferation of "post-Napoleonic" writing—often referencing exotic locales—both revises longstanding notions about literary orientalism and reveals a remarkable synthesis of Romantic idealism with contemporary cultural materialism that heretofore has not been explored. Indeed, in interlocking case studies that span the reach of British conquest, ranging from Greece, China, and Egypt to Italy and Tahiti, Fang challenges a major convention of periodical publication. While periodicals are usually thought to be defined by time, this account of the geographic attention exerted by late Romantic authors shows them to be equally concerned with space. With its exploration of magazines and imperialism as a context for Romantic writing, culture, and aesthetics, this book will appeal not only to scholars of book history and reading cultures but also to those of nineteenth-century British writing and history.

Book Synopsis Texts Reading Texts, Sacred and Secular by : Alison Jack
Download or read book Texts Reading Texts, Sacred and Secular written by Alison Jack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1999-05-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language, themes and imagery of the Bible have been rewritten into texts across time. In the Revelation of John, the Hebrew Bible echoes and is reinvented, just as in James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) many explicit and implicit readings and interpretations of the Bible are offered. In Texts Reading Texts, these readings of the Bible, and the ways in which Revelation and Hogg's Confessions have themselves been read, are considered from the two postmodern perspectives of marginalization and deconstruction. By reading the two seemingly unrelated texts side by side from these perspectives, traditional readings of them both are disturbed and challenged.
Book Synopsis Neoclassical Satire and the Romantic School 1780–1830 by : Rolf P. Lessenich
Download or read book Neoclassical Satire and the Romantic School 1780–1830 written by Rolf P. Lessenich and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Modern British Nature Writing, 1789–2020 by : Will Abberley
Download or read book Modern British Nature Writing, 1789–2020 written by Will Abberley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we speak so much of nature today when there is so little of it left? Prompted by this question, this study offers the first full-length exploration of modern British nature writing, from the late eighteenth century to the present. Focusing on non-fictional prose writing, the book supplies new readings of classic texts by Romantic, Victorian and Contemporary authors, situating these within the context of an enduringly popular genre. Nature writing is still widely considered fundamentally celebratory or escapist, yet it is also very much in tune with the conflicts of a natural world under threat. The book's five authors connect these conflicts to the triple historical crisis of the environment; of representation; and of modern dissociated sensibility. This book offers an informed critical approach to modern British nature writing for specialist readers, as well as a valuable guide for general readers concerned by an increasingly diminished natural world.

Book Synopsis The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature by : Trevor Royle
Download or read book The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature written by Trevor Royle and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature is the most comprehensive reference guide to Scotland's literature, covering a period from the earliest times to the early 1990s. It includes over 600 essays on the lives and works of the principal poets, novelists, dramatists critics and men and women of letters who have written in English, Scots or Gaelic. Thus, as well as such major writers as Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, Gavin Douglas, Allan Ramsay, Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns, Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Hugh MacDiarmid, the Companion also lists many minor writers whose work might otherwise have been overlooked in any survey of Scottish literature. Also included here are entries on the lives of other more peripheral writers such as historians, philosophers, diarists and divines whose work has made a contribution to Scottish letters. Other essays range over such general subjects as the principal work of major writers, literary movements, historical events, the world of printing and publishing, folklore, journalism, drama and Gaelic. A feature of the book is the inclusion of the bibliography of each writer and reference to the major critical works. This comprehensive guide is an essential tool for the serious student of Scottish literature as well as being an ideal guide and companion for the general reader.
