Book excerpt: Ceramics in Virginia contains a wealth of information on stoneware made by several pottery factories in the Lower Basin of the James River from the early 1800s to the Civil War era. It covers the major Virginia production centers in Richmond, Henrico County along Four Mile Creek and Bailey's Run near New Market, and Petersburg. Extensive background information is given on the pottery sites and the potters who operated them: David Parr, Richard Randolph, Stephen Sweeney, John Schermerhorn, Henry Lowndes, and others. This book was based on an exhaustive search of available written resources pertaining to the factory sites and on actual shards recovered from them. Physical evidence from the archaeological sites, housed at the College of William and Mary, the William and Mary Center for Archaeological Research, and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, was also studied and photographed. The author has personally examined and photographed thousands of shards and hundreds of stoneware pieces from some of the largest private collections of Virginia stoneware in the United States, including one of the largest collections of Henry Lowndes stoneware. The book is intended for scholars, collectors, decorative arts students, historical archaeologists, educators, and historians.
