Download or read book On the Line written by Eileen Edwards and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘ON THE LINE’ is a detailed autobiography written by Eileen Edwards about her tennis officiating career, presented almost in diary format over four decades from 1972. Eileen tells of her initial interest in tennis when, in 1987, she joined the British Tennis Umpires Association (BTUA). This game, set and match narrative continues through until 2012 with the Association of British Tennis Officials (ABTO) as a top tennis official and having served as a member of the Committee of Management. Eileen wrote everything down with meticulous detail throughout her distinguished officiating career, reminiscing details of matches she officiated, including pro-celebrity tournaments and several conversations with officials, players, royalty, celebrities and her beloved, Cliff Richard. What you do find in this book is a very revealing account of the tennis officiating industry. You also get the distinct feeling that writing the book was actually cathartic for Eileen, putting her concerns to print and righting some wrongs with those within the industry. Her book reads like the history of British tennis over the last four decades, and it is a revealing account of the camaraderie, favouritism, in-fighting and back-biting within the tennis association. Sadly, Eileen’s exceptional and eventful career was tinged with bitterness and seems sad that her fantastic experiences and years of devotion to the tennis association would end in such a way. There are stories she tells that will shock you. However, with her three children, also as top tennis officials, there are plenty of amusing stories Eileen tells that will make you laugh and even the odd words with her and her children’s wonderful sense of humour and fun. This book is a really interesting read for any tennis aficionado.

Book Synopsis International Arbitration: When East Meets West by : Neil Kaplan
Download or read book International Arbitration: When East Meets West written by Neil Kaplan and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Asia, China, in particular, gains economic momentum and increasingly attracts global attention, disputes between Asian and Western parties will inevitably increase. This book, the first to address issues arising from these types of disputes in depth, collects incisive articles by both well-known Asian arbitrators and non-Asian practitioners with extensive experience dealing with arbitrations involving Asian parties, all under the aegis of Michael Moser, a Western-trained lawyer who had the foresight to build a China-focused dispute resolution practice at a time when it was not fashionable to do so. The articles reflect Moser’s exemplary career as an independent arbitrator who has navigated between Asian and Western legal cultures seamlessly for decades. The upshot is an authoritative investigation of the differences and similarities of international arbitration between two contrasting cultures–both from a legal and social perspective– as well as a consideration of how each culture has influenced international arbitration practice overall. Issues covered include the following: interim measures in support of arbitration; the hybrid arbitration-mediation mode of dispute resolution; what China’s investment treaties have to offer; Moser’s ‘Triple A’ approach to mediation; witness conferencing; influence of of rang (¿), or exercise of altruism; Chinese courts’ approach to international arbitration; evolution of investment protection between China and Europe; disclosure versus state secrecy laws in China; and the standard for disclosure in rules of evidence. Given the increasing prevalence of arbitrations seated in Asia and the number of new players engaged in arbitration in Asia, this book is certain to attract a wide range of arbitration practitioners, especially those engaged in arbitrations involving Asian parties. As a comparative study of Asian and Western arbitration theory and practice, it is peerless. Scholars of arbitration worldwide are sure to learn from the insights detailed here of practitioners with consummate experience in arbitrations involving cross-cultural parties. “This is an excellent and wide ranging publication that rightly pays tribute to Michael’s career as a multi-faceted doyen of international arbitration; he has had his base in Asia but at all times he has held a global and even minded view. Many of us – and the overall institution of international arbitration - owe so very much to him.” Matthew Gearing, QC, former Chair of HKIAC “This wide-ranging and insightful volume pays tribute to the distinguished career of Michael Moser, a true Renaissance figure who has traversed both East and West and helped so many others bridge the two.” Gary Born, WilmerHale

Download or read book A Champion's Mind written by Pete Sampras and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pete Sampras is arguably the greatest tennis player ever, a man whose hard-nosed work ethic led to an unprecedented number one world ranking for 286 weeks, and whose prodigious talent made possible a record-setting fourteen Grand Slam titles. While his more vocal rivals sometimes grabbed the headlines, Pete always preferred to let his racket do the talking. Until now. In A Champion’s Mind, the tennis great who so often exhibited visible discomfort with letting people “inside his head” finally opens up. An athletic prodigy, Pete resolved from his earliest playing days never to let anything get in the way of his love for the game. But while this single-minded determination led to tennis domination, success didn’t come without a price. The constant pressure of competing on the world’s biggest stage—in the unblinking eye of a media machine hungry for more than mere athletic greatness—took its toll. Here for the first time Pete speaks freely about what it was like to possess what he calls “the Gift.” He writes about the personal trials he faced—including the death of a longtime coach and confidant—and the struggles he gutted his way through while being seemingly on top of the world. Among the book’s most riveting scenes are an early devastating loss to Stefan Edberg that led Pete to make a monastic commitment to delivering on his natural talent; a grueling, four-hour-plus match against Alex Corretja during which Pete became seriously ill; fierce on-court battles with rival and friend Andre Agassi; and the triumphant last match of Pete’s career at the finals of the 2002 U.S. Open. In A Champion’s Mind, one of the most revered, successful, and intensely private players in the history of tennis offers an intimate look at the life of an elite athlete.

Book Synopsis Table Tennis Triples by : Guenter Arndt
Download or read book Table Tennis Triples written by Guenter Arndt and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most existing table tennis teams never play each other as a team. "Triples" for the first time allows three-person teams to play "serious" table tennis. The book explains its rationale, equipment and its manufacture, its rules, and its integration into existing table tennis events. It strives to enhance the already popular image of table tennis by adding a "true team sport" to its repertoire, thereby increasing its player, spectator and media appeal. Part 1 establishes the theoretical basis of Triples and provides detailed information on the design and manufacture of its hardware. In analysing its geometrical and physical aspects, it shows that playing conditions in Triples are equivalent to or better than in the conventional game - e.g. a greater action space and shot variety. Hence various novel table and net designs are described, including a reversible rectangular-to-round "retrofit" table tennis table system. Part 2 contains everything one needs to know to play the game, presenting a detailed account of the Triples rules and their reasoning. These include some concepts new to table tennis, such as "Tie Break", "Shoot-Out", and "Draw" game outcomes. Details on scoring, umpiring, match progress displays and possible team strategies are presented, including point-by-point score sheets and team events involving singles, doubles and Triples matches. Part 3 provides a glimpse into the future. It describes how Triples equipment can be used to create interesting new practice and recreational games, including 4-player "Quadruples", and how electronic sensors and computerised displays will soon lead to the "intelligent table tennis table". With its 60 figures, 12 tables, 45 references and 3 "new terms" registers the book is lucid and user-friendly. Collectively it invites table tennis players, coaches, organisers and administrators alike to try out the new game - and in this has the support of the International Table Tennis Federation.
Download or read book All In written by Billie Jean King and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • An inspiring and intimate self-portrait of the champion of equality that encompasses her brilliant tennis career, unwavering activism, and an ongoing commitment to fairness and social justice. “A story about the personal strength, immense growth, and undeniable greatness of one woman who fearlessly stood up to a culture trying to break her down.”—Serena Williams In this spirited account, Billie Jean King details her life's journey to find her true self. She recounts her groundbreaking tennis career—six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, twenty Wimbledon championships, thirty-nine grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes." She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women's movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement. She describes the myriad challenges she's hurdled—entrenched sexism, an eating disorder, near financial peril after being outed—on her path to publicly and unequivocally acknowledging her sexual identity at the age of fifty-one. She talks about how her life today remains one of indefatigable service. She offers insights and advice on leadership, business, activism, sports, politics, marriage equality, parenting, sexuality, and love. And she shows how living honestly and openly has had a transformative effect on her relationships and happiness. Hers is the story of a pathbreaking feminist, a world-class athlete, and an indomitable spirit whose impact has transcended even her spectacular achievements in sports.
