Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central Evidences of Christianity It will be granted, to begin with, that these conceptions of a human life, actually realizing perfection, nay, embracing an incarnation of God, and thus affording a complete and divinely sanc tioned remedy for moral and spiritual evil, are the most remarkable, simply as conceptions, in all literature. The mere statement of them is enough to relieve us from the charge of vagueness and generality when we speak of the life, character, and work of Christ; we can therefore proceed to the argument of this tract, and show first that these are not mere conceptions, however great, but facts of a true and solid history; and then that all Christian evidence becomes, by this proof, strong with a new strength, and bright with a new light. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The following pages, therefore, will discuss the Christian Evidences in an order modeled upon that which is constantly followed in our legal tribunals. There the examination of the evidence presented consists of two main parts; and the inquiry is made - first, whether the testimony offered is actual testimony in the case under consideration - that is, whether it has any material bearing upon the case, and whether it is true; and, secondly, being mate rial and true, what is its weight? Accord ingly, such is the order followed here. The work is therefore divided into two Parts: The Second Part discusses - The Weight of the Ev idence in favor of the Divinity of Christianity, and presents in its proof: (a) The Superhu man Facts upon which Christianity is founded, as displayed in - l. The Advent of Christ; 2. The Character of Christ; 3. His Teachings; 4. His Prophecies; 5. His Miracles. (b) Its Superhuman Results, in the changes it has wrought in the characters and lives of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of Christianity Evidences in the wider sense. - And so the student of Christian Evidences is justified in including within the scope of his inquiry those elementary ideas of God and religion which, though not distinctive of Christianity, are its groundwork. In taking this wider sweep he is enabled to meet the arguments of different classes of assailants. There are those who profess belief in a God while denying in whole or in part the truth of the Christian revelation. There are also Opponents with whom he seems to have less in common. Besides the Atheist, who utterly denies the existence of a God, there is the Agnostic, who grudgingly admits the possibility of a God, but asserts that if He does exist He cannot possibly be known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences of Christianity Many able writers on the subject give the first and chief place to the historical evidences, and regard the other evidences as merely subsidiary. The historical evidences require for their full development a laborious search into the records and monuments of antiquity. Few men have the opportunity and ability to perform this labor. Book excerpt: Do the terms 'pagan' and 'Christian,' 'transition from paganism to Christianity' still hold as explanatory devices to apply to the political, religious and cultural transformation experienced Empire-wise? Revisiting 'pagans' and 'Christians' in Late Antiquity has been a fertile site of scholarship in recent years: the paradigm shift in the interpretation of the relations between 'pagans' and 'Christians' replaced the old 'conflict model' with a subtler, complex approach and triggered the upsurge of new explanatory models such as multiculturalism, cohabitation, cooperation, identity, or group cohesion. This collection of essays, inscribes itself into the revisionist discussion of pagan-Christian relations over a broad territory and time-span, the Roman Empire from the fourth to the eighth century. A set of papers argues that if 'paganism' had never been fully extirpated or denied by the multiethnic educated elite that managed the Roman Empire, 'Christianity' came to be presented by the same elite as providing a way for a wider group of people to combine true philosophy and right religion. The speed with which this happened is just as remarkable as the long persistence of paganism after the sea-change of the fourth century that made Christianity the official religion of the State. For a long time afterwards, 'pagans' and 'Christians' lived 'in between' polytheistic and monotheist traditions and disputed Classical and non-Classical legacies.

The present brief series makes no pretensions to fulness of treatment, but it is hoped that its general method and plan, which are believed to be new; its attempt to deal with phases of unbelief which are specially promi nent at the present time; and, above all, its brevity, may secure it a field of usefulness, and realize, in some measure, the expectations of those who have urged its publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidence of Christianity: Derived From Its Nature and Reception The idea, which the following pages are designed to illustrate, is briefly this: that a religion like the Christian could never have existed, unless it had been introduced by divine authority. It could not have been invented: it would not have been received. This line of argument has at least one advantage; at the same time that it proves, if well founded, that the religion is true, it shows also what the religion is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Christian Evidence The original work, which formed the basis of this handbook, was only a compend. The first edition, though quite large, was speedily exhausted. Since it has been out of print, there have been so many calls for it, sometimes in large quantities, that both the publisher and the author feel justified in issuing the present edition. It is cause for hopefulness and for gratitude to God that, even in these days of many departures from the faith, books of an evangelical order are in demand.
