Download or read book Centauri Dreams written by Paul Gilster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book because I wanted to learn more about interstel lar flight. Not the Star Trek notion of tearing around the Galaxy in a huge spaceship-that was obviously beyond existing tech nology-but a more realistic mission. In 1989 I had videotaped Voyager 2's encounter with Neptune and watched the drama of robotic exploration over and over again. I started to wonder whether we could do something similar with Alpha Centauri, the nearest star to the Sun. Everyone seemed to agree that manned flight to the stars was out of the question, if not permanently then for the indefinitely foreseeable future. But surely we could do something with robotics. And if we could figure out a theoretical way to do it, how far were we from the actual technology that would make it happen? In other words, what was the state of our interstellar technology today, those concepts and systems that might translate into a Voyager to the stars? Finding answers meant talking to people inside and outside of NASA. I was surprised to learn that there is a large literature of interstellar flight. Nobody knows for sure how to propel a space craft fast enough to make the interstellar crossing within a time scale that would fit the conventional idea of a mission, but there are candidate systems that are under active investigation. Some of this effort begins with small systems that we'll use near the Earth and later hope to extend to deep space missions.
Download or read book Alpha Centauri written by Martin Beech and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As our closest stellar companion and composed of two Sun-like stars and a third small dwarf star, Alpha Centauri is an ideal testing ground of astrophysical models and has played a central role in the history and development of modern astronomy—from the first guesses at stellar distances to understanding how our own star, the Sun, might have evolved. It is also the host of the nearest known exoplanet, an ultra-hot, Earth-like planet recently discovered. Just 4.4 light years away Alpha Centauri is also the most obvious target for humanity’s first directed interstellar space probe. Such a mission could reveal the small-scale structure of a new planetary system and also represent the first step in what must surely be humanity’s greatest future adventure—exploration of the Milky Way Galaxy itself. For all of its closeness, α Centauri continues to tantalize astronomers with many unresolved mysteries, such as how did it form, how many planets does it contain and where are they, and how might we view its extensive panorama directly? In this book we move from the study of individual stars to the study of our Solar System and our nearby galactic neighborhood. On the way we will review the rapidly developing fields of exoplanet formation and detection.

Book Synopsis Living on Centauri by : Donald Krueger
Download or read book Living on Centauri written by Donald Krueger and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins some 300 years ago when the planet Centauri sent a tiny spaceship to Earth. The saga began from a discovery that the two planets, were created identically. This book is the final chapter evolving from the first three in the storyline. Background would be revealed by reading the first three, i.e.: “Hush Sisters Hush”, “Music for Centauri”, and “The Search for Tesla”. All of which are available in eBooks and paperbacks. This book is a continuation with all the same characters. This story is about adapting to living on a new planet, since circumstances on Earth gave grave concern for remaining. The 40 times lightspeed spacecraft made the two-month journey in a luxury comparable to a cruise ship. Now they fit in nicely and live in the mansion of the woman who started it all. They are now among a populous with life expectances approaching 1000 years. Physical appearances have no identifiers that are discernable, except the slow growth of children. On Centauri there is but one culture and no religions. The global population is 150 million and has but one language. So, now with interest in Earth waning, the Council of Centauri wants to utilize this marvelous spacecraft to search the galaxy for life beyond what has before been limited to sub-lightspeed vehicles. They decided on a ten-year expedition with a crew of seven only to find that the cosmos has little to offer except months of boredom.

She is married, she is sinuous and the perfect age to have children but to her disappointment, she cannot. She is not alone. Natural pregnancies no longer exist on the planet Centauri. The species is being kept in existence through cloning. Shawnis is the unchallenged master at cloning embryos for implanting in females. She is on the board of several clinics that have that purpose only. But the population is declining at an alarming rate and she is not the only one concerned. A small but elite council has been formed to seek a solution. She is honored to be one of the six. If these, the best minds on Centauri fear their genus will be extinct in three thousand years. An ancient expedition discovered that the planet Centauri is a twin of a distant planet called earth. Centauri is far more advanced yet the populous of earth is expanding almost too fast. Perhaps an answer lies four light years away.

Book Synopsis Voyage to Alpha Centauri by : Michael D. O'Brien
Download or read book Voyage to Alpha Centauri written by Michael D. O'Brien and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2013-11-25 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set eighty years in the future, this novel by the best-selling author Michael O'Brien is about an expedition sent from the planet Earth to Alpha Centauri, the star closest to our solar system. The Kosmos, a great ship that the central character Neil de Hoyos describes as a "flying city", is immense in size and capable of more than half light-speed. Hoyos is a Nobel Prize winning physicist who has played a major role in designing the ship. Hoyos has signed on as a passenger because he desires to escape the seemingly benign totalitarian government that controls everything on his home planet. He is a skeptical and quirky misanthropic humanist with old tragedies, loves, and hatreds that are secreted in his memory. The surprises that await him on the voyage-and its destination-will shatter all of his assumptions and point him to a true new horizon. Science fiction and fantasy literature are genres that have become dominant forces in contemporary worldwide culture. Our fascination with the near-angelic powers of new technology, its benefits and dangers, its potential for obsession and catastrophe, raises vital questions that this work explores about human nature and the cosmos, about man's image of himself and where he is going-and why he seeks to go there.
