Download or read book Gabriel's Demons written by Tori Centanni and published by ODDROCKET. This book was released on 2015-05-25 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Gabriel Price, and I’m no stranger to bad dreams. After losing my family in a house fire, I suppose it’s normal to have nightmares. Except now, I’m dreaming awake, seeing things I don’t want to see, things I shouldn’t be able to see. The first time I saw someone’s death, the vision hit me hard, just like the speeding car that crashed, killing its driver. There was nothing I could do to stop it from happening. Not the first time. Or the second. Or the third. But now…I think I might have a chance to prevent my visions from coming true. It’s a gift to be able to stop someone from dying, right? The demon who’s interested in my ability thinks so, but I’m not about to accept the deal he's offering. My inner demons give me enough hell. I don't need even more. Is it the trauma of losing his family to a tragic fire just weeks ago? Some kind of curse? Or a newfound psychic gift? And if he knows a person is heading for their death, what should he do? Shouldn’t he try to save them? And who could possibly help? A standalone urban fantasy novella in the Demon’s Assistant series.

Download or read book Cent'anni! written by Diane Fortuna and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Cent' Anni: 100 Years," ten short sketches present three generations of an immigrant Italian family from Bari as they lurch through dooms of love to an American identity. Separating these related vignettes are Interludes, one-page snapshots of their lives in New York City and Long Island. In Italy, Northerners considered the peoples south of Rome to be barbarians: "Hide the silver," the adage goes, "They're from Bari." Even greater hostility awaited these impoverished Southern Italians in New York. To deal with it, they insulated themselves within the magic circle of their immediate family adopting a cunning silence to keep all others at bay. Despite high principles of sacrifice and care giving, some could neither forego "easy money" nor the privileges and power such money procured. Beginning with the death of Mamma in 1929, some of the stories are comic, some sad, some both, all originating from the struggle "to breathe free" in a new land.

Book Synopsis Theatre and Autocracy in the Ancient World by : Eric Csapo
Download or read book Theatre and Autocracy in the Ancient World written by Eric Csapo and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did ancient autocrats patronise theatre? How could ancient theatre – rightly supposed to be an artform that developed and flourished under democracy – serve their needs? Plato claimed that poets of tragic drama "drag states into tyranny and democracy". The word order is very deliberate: he goes on to say that tragic poets are honoured "especially by the tyrants, and secondly by the democracies" (Republic 568c). For more than forty years scholars have explored the political, ideological, structural and economic links between democracy and theatre in ancient Greece. By contrast, the links between autocracy and theatre are virtually ignored, despite the fact that for the first 200 years of theatre's existence more than a third of all theatre-states were autocratic. For the next 600 years, theatre flourished almost exclusively under autocratic regimes. The volume brings together experts in ancient theatre to undertake the first systematic study of the patterns of use made of the theatre by tyrants, regents, kings and emperors. Theatre and Autocracy in the Ancient World is the first comprehensive study of the historical circumstances and means by which autocrats turned a medium of mass communication into an instrument of mass control.
