Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of extensive research to find out why Celtic FC has been involved in testimonial and other benefit matches possibly more than any other football club in the world. By interviewing fans and players past and present, the authors uncover many reasons behind the popularity of these matches. They also examine the changing nature of the benefit game; they ask fans how they feel now that these matches sometimes simply swell the bank balance of millionaire players. Also included are fans' memories, both amusing and sometimes poignant of testimonial matches they have seen - most notable for behaviour both on and off the pitch. Chapter 1 The Benefit Game Chapter 2 Old Renton v Celtic Chapter 3 A Hunger for Games Chapter 4 No Sleeping Giant Chapter 5 Between the Wars Chapter 6 1940s Chapter 7 The 1950s Chapter 8 The 1960s Chapter 9 The 1970s Chapter 10 The 1980s Chapter 11 The 1990s Chapter 12 The 2000s Chapter 13 All in the Benefit Game?

Book excerpt: In We Are Celtic Supporters Richard Purden examines what created the culture, ideas and beliefs around Celtic football club. In new and exclusive interviews with supporters, he explores the Celtic way of life and the rich traditions that give context to much of the support while deconstructing some myths along the way. As a travelling supporter he visits a variety of fans in locations such as New York, Spain, Germany, Italy and various parts of the UK. He talks to well-known Celtic supporters such as James MacMillan about the often misrepresented Catholic roots, to Pat Nevin about why he fell out of love with the club and to a number of well-known rock 'n' rollers such as Noel Gallagher, Bobby Gillespie and Johnny Marr. We Are Celtic Supporters gives the inside story of how major events in Celtic's history have shaped the identity of the fans, and what it really means to follow this unique football club.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward C. Sellner tells of the tradition of the Celtic anamchara or soul friend, the loving mentor who promotes the spiritual growth of those he or she guides, in his original and insightful Stories of the Celtic Soul Friends. Here, punctuated by the stimulating stories of the four leaders of the early Celtic church--St. Patrick, St.Brigit, St. Columcille and the relatively obscure St. Colman of Land Ela--the author traces, celebrates and demonstrates the tradition's immediacy to our own faith, lives, and work, holding Jesus as the perfect exemplar. Mentors, teachers of religion, pastors, counselors, and anyone embarking upon a spiritual journey, should find this a beneficial, as well as invigorating, read. --A new twist on Celtic spirituality --Along with the always popular St. Patrick, this book introduces lesser-known Celtic saints

Book excerpt: When H. P. Blavatsky, the controversial head of the turn of the century movement Theosophy, defined "a true Theosophist" in her book The Key to Theosophy, she could have just as easily have been describing W. B. Yeats. Blavatsky writes, "A true Theosophist must put in practice the loftiest moral ideal, must strive to realize his unity with the whole of humanity, and work ceaselessly for others." Although Yeats joined Blavatsky's group in 1887, and subsequently left to help form The Golden Dawn in 1890, Yeats's career as poet and politician were very much in line with the methods set forth by Blavatsky's doctrine. My project explores how Yeats employs this pop-culture occultism in the creation of his own national literary aesthetic. This project not only examines the influence theosophy has on the literary work Yeats produced in the late 1880's and 1890's, but also Yeats's work as literary critic and anthology editor during that time. While Yeats uses theosophy's metaphysical world view to provide an underlying structure for some of his earliest poetry and drama, he uses theosophy's methods of investigation and argument to discover a metaphysical literary tradition which incorporates all of his own literary heroes into an Irish cultural tradition. Theosophy provides a methodology for Yeats to argue that both Shelley and Blake (for example) are part of a tradition that includes himself. Basing his argument in theosophy, Yeats can argue that the Irish people are a distinct race with a culture more "sincere" and "natural" than that of England.

Book excerpt: In the vein of Hotel Babylon and Confessions of a GP, The Secret Player will fascinate footballs fans with its wealth of insider knowledge and willingness to talk, albeit anonymously, about the inner workings of the game. Based on the hugely popular 'The Player' columns in FourFourTwo magazine, the book gives a warts-and-all insight into the daily life of professional footballers. Month by month, it chronicles the oscillating rhythms of the season, from the trudge of pre-season to the 'squeaky-bum time' of promotion and relegation. The player himself has played at all levels of English football - from Premier League to a season of non-League - and represented England.

Book excerpt: There are few histories in sport which can match that chronicled in connection with Celtic Football Club. Yet in all that has been written, little has focused on the support. 'Our Stories And Our Songs' seeks to redress matters by encapsulating the unique identity of the Celtic faithful, who make this famous Club the grand old team it is. The author's passion rings true from the outset, as he documents the backdrop to the community from which the support emanated, before exploring the various enthusiasms and representations of the Club. Readers are then taken on a fascinating journey from 1902 to the present day, which relives an unrivalled heritage. In charting 'special' moments, created by the fans alone; the atmosphere, humour and passion of the support is captured in a manner that both enthrals and warms the heart.Individual supporters tell their personal Celtic stories. These tales are supplemented by the interviews of prominent fans. The platform they are offered provides huge entertainment and testifies the faithful's friendships with supports in Ireland, Germany and Spain (which are each devoted a place within a friendships chapter). The book concludes with a look into the history of different groups that Celtic fans have formed. From those early days when supporters established Brake Clubs to congregate on horse drawn carriage, to today's pilgrimages in Supporters Club buses - the numerous factions have their own distinctive accounts.'Our Stories And Our Songs' is, ultimately, both an historical and contemporary record of a people, their values, hopes and dreams In keeping with the traditions of the Club, all proceeds from this book go to Jay Beatty's 'Down's & Proud' charity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryan Robson is widely remembered as a fearless and inspirational player and captain, both for club and country, whose presence lifted team-mates and intimidated opponents. At his peak, he was acknowledged as the most complete midfield player in the country, and played at the highest level despite a series of devastating injuries. He began his playing career at West Bromwich Albion, then moved to Manchester United in 1981 for a then record British transfer fee of £1.5 million. He soon became captain, and enjoyed regular Cup success, eventually winning the Championship. He also won 90 caps for England, 65 of them as captain. His autobiography reveals a fascinating insight into his days with the England and United camps and characters such as Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, Roy Keane and Alex Ferguson. He puts the record straight on the 'drink culture' that Ferguson sought to stamp out at United, and describes his pain when he discovered he was surplus to the manager's requirements. He candidly reflects on the highs and lows of his football life, and discusses incidents on the pitch as well as some of the clashes that have happened behind the scenes.

Book excerpt: This explosive book is the eagerly awaited paperback of the bestseller. It is the follow up to "Terrace Legends", the groundbreaking blockbuster that built bridges between Cass Pennant and Martin King, who came together in a no holds barred book about experiences on the terraces. The result was a hard-hitting, unflinchingly honest testament to life with some of the biggest firms in football history. This sequel packs an even harder punch, bringing together the frontline faces, the top boys who ran the legendary firms from all over the country. From genuine hard men who have literally fought for their clubs to other eccentric football fans who have gone to great lengths to support their side, the cross-section of well known faces is very broad, and all of them give honest answers to the sort of questions even a plain clothes football intelligence officer wouldn't dare to ask.
