Book Synopsis Cell Organelles by : Reinhold G. Herrmann
Download or read book Cell Organelles written by Reinhold G. Herrmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compartmentation of genetic information is a fundamental feature of the eukaryotic cell. The metabolic capacity of a eukaryotic (plant) cell and the steps leading to it are overwhelmingly an endeavour of a joint genetic cooperation between nucleus/cytosol, plastids, and mitochondria. Alter ation of the genetic material in anyone of these compartments or exchange of organelles between species can seriously affect harmoniously balanced growth of an organism. Although the biological significance of this genetic design has been vividly evident since the discovery of non-Mendelian inheritance by Baur and Correns at the beginning of this century, and became indisputable in principle after Renner's work on interspecific nuclear/plastid hybrids (summarized in his classical article in 1934), studies on the genetics of organelles have long suffered from the lack of respectabil ity. Non-Mendelian inheritance was considered a research sideline~ifnot a freak~by most geneticists, which becomes evident when one consults common textbooks. For instance, these have usually impeccable accounts of photosynthetic and respiratory energy conversion in chloroplasts and mitochondria, of metabolism and global circulation of the biological key elements C, N, and S, as well as of the organization, maintenance, and function of nuclear genetic information. In contrast, the heredity and molecular biology of organelles are generally treated as an adjunct, and neither goes as far as to describe the impact of the integrated genetic system.

Book excerpt: The Structure and Function of Animal Cell Components: An Introductory Text provides an introduction to the study of animal cells, specifically the structure and function of the cells. To help readers appreciate the discussions, this book first provides an introduction to the physiological and biochemical function of animal cells, which is followed by an introduction to animal cell structure. This text then presents topics on the components of the cells, such as the mitochondria and the nucleus, and processes in the cells, including protein synthesis. This selection will be invaluable to cytologists, anatomists, and pathologists, as well as to readers who have an elementary knowledge of both biochemistry and cytology.

This book traces the rise of cell biology and explains biological concepts through easy-to-follow text. Sidebars provide biographies of key scientists and descriptions of the evolution of microscopes and other significant technologies. Readers travel deep inside the cell, following the path of scientists as they unlock its mysteries.
Book Synopsis Genome Organization And Function In The Cell Nucleus by : Karsten Rippe
Download or read book Genome Organization And Function In The Cell Nucleus written by Karsten Rippe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-12-19 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By way of its clear and logical structure, as well as abundant highresolution illustrations, this is a systematic survey of the players and pathways that control genome function in the mammalian cell nucleus. As such, this handbook and reference ties together recently gained knowledge from a variety of scientific disciplines and approaches, dissecting all major genomic events: transcription, replication, repair, recombination and chromosome segregation. A special emphasis is put on transcriptional control, including genome-wide interactions and non-coding RNAs, chromatin structure, epigenetics and nuclear organization. With its focus on fundamental mechanisms and the associated biomolecules, this will remain essential reading for years to come.
Book Synopsis Cell Origin, Structure, and Function by : Joel D. Pardee
Download or read book Cell Origin, Structure, and Function written by Joel D. Pardee and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lecture, we will briefly review the principles of physics, central metabolism, and cell biology that make health possible. This exercise is appropriate for those of us who have set before ourselves the problem of understanding and preserving life processes, because it is through the medium of a cell that energy creates life. We are aware that life processes require a complex set of biochemical reactions. But that is not enough. Not only are complex reactions necessary, but superimposed on this essential requirement is the necessity to build and maintain a dynamic cellular structure. Chemical energy builds cells. In this lecture, we will see how cells extract energy from the entropic dissolution of the universe, how the extracted energy is used to build cell structure, and how cell structure determines cell function. Table of Contents: Origin and Energy of Life / How Cells Make a Living / Order From Chaos: Entropy and The River of Time / Capturing Entropy / Cell Architecture / Why Cells are Compartmentalized. The Function of Organelles / Cell Function / The Secretory Pathway / The Golgi Apparatus / Mitochondria / The Cytoskeleton: How Organelles are Organized / Vesicle Transport / Mitosis / Energy and Metabolism / References
Book Synopsis Cellular Organelles by : Edward Bittar
Download or read book Cellular Organelles written by Edward Bittar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-08 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to provide a synopsis of present knowledge of the structure, organisation, and function of cellular organelles with an emphasis on the examination of important but unsolved problems, and the directions in which molecular and cell biology are moving. Though designed primarily to meet the needs of the first-year medical student, particularly in schools where the traditional curriculum has been partly or wholly replaced by a multi-disciplinary core curriculum, the mass of information made available here should prove useful to students of biochemistry, physiology, biology, bioengineering, dentistry, and nursing. It is not yet possible to give a complete account of the relations between the organelles of two compartments and of the mechanisms by which some degree of order is maintained in the cell as a whole. However, a new breed of scientists, known as molecular cell biologists, have already contributed in some measure to our understanding of several biological phenomena notably interorganelle communication. Take, for example, intracellular membrane transport: it can now be expressed in terms of the sorting, targeting, and transport of protein from the endoplasmic reticulum to another compartment. This volume contains the first ten chapters on the subject of organelles. The remaining four are in Volume 3, to which sections on organelle disorders and the extracellular matrix have been added.
Book Synopsis Structure and Function of Biological Membranes by : Lawrence I. Rothfield
Download or read book Structure and Function of Biological Membranes written by Lawrence I. Rothfield and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 503 pages. Book excerpt: Structure and Function of Biological Membranes explains the membrane phenomena at the molecular level through the use of biochemical and biophysical approaches. The book is an in-depth study of the structure and function of membranes. It is divided into three main parts. The first part provides an overview of the study of the biological membrane at the molecular level. Part II focuses on the detailed description of the overall molecular organization of membranes. The third part covers the relationship of the molecular organization of membranes to specific membrane functions; discusses catalytic membrane proteins; presents the role of membranes in important cellular functions; and looks at the membrane systems in eukaryotic cells. Biochemists, cell physiologists, biologists, researchers, and graduate and postdoctoral students in the field of biology will find the text a good reference material.
