Notre espérance dans le salut de Dieu est-elle encore au centre de notre foi ? Question d'autant plus prégnante et grave que si elle ne l'était plus, devrions nous reconnaître que le Christ est mort pour rien. Toutefois il ne cherche pas à dresser une analyse de ce phénomène ni à produire un traité théologique sur la nature du salut, mais propose, à tout un chacun, de s'engager sur un chemin de ré-appropriation de son espérance, en découvrant, ou re-découvrant, le témoignage que quelques hommes du passé nous ont laissé de celle-ci dans les Écritures et tout particulièrement dans le livre des Psaumes. Qu'est-ce que les psaumes nous disent du vécu du salut ? Qui sauve ? Pourquoi ? Comment ? Devons-nous craindre le jugement du Seigneur ? Nous sauvera-t-il malgré notre inconstance ? Nos larmes ont-elles la capacité à l'émouvoir et nos prières à le persuader de ne pas nous abandonner au néant de la mort ? Autant de questions qui, il y a plus de deux mille ans, taraudaient ces hommes qui, debout sur le parvis du Temple de Jérusalem, ne quittaient pas du regard la demeure de Dieu en guettant sa réponse. Face à leur désarrois, il revint à quelques hommes, portés par leur foi, la lumière du Seigneur et une longue fréquentation de l'Écriture, d'y répondre en rédigeant de petites prières individuelles ou collectives qui furent nommées "psaumes". Ces dernières étaient données à chacun qui, se les appropriant, en faisait le corps de leurs entretiens avec leur Seigneur et un lieu de repos au milieu des vicissitudes de leur existence. C'est donc au partage de la quête spirituelle de ceux qui les ont reçus que ces pages nous convient. Invitation d'autant plus pressante que l'homme et la femme d'aujourd'hui peuvent difficilement nier qu'ils ne sont pas déchirés par les mêmes interrogations.
