Book excerpt: Proteins lie at the heart of almost all biological processes and have an incredibly wide range of activities. Central to the function of all proteins is their ability to adopt, stably or sometimes transiently, structures that allow for interaction with other molecules. An understanding of the structure of a protein can therefore lead us to a much improved picture of its molecular function. This realisation has been a prime motivation of recent Structural Genomics projects, involving large-scale experimental determination of protein structures, often those of proteins about which little is known of function. These initiatives have, in turn, stimulated the massive development of novel methods for prediction of protein function from structure. Since model structures may also take advantage of new function prediction algorithms, the first part of the book deals with the various ways in which protein structures may be predicted or inferred, including specific treatment of membrane and intrinsically disordered proteins. A detailed consideration of current structure-based function prediction methodologies forms the second part of this book, which concludes with two chapters, focusing specifically on case studies, designed to illustrate the real-world application of these methods. With bang up-to-date texts from world experts, and abundant links to publicly available resources, this book will be invaluable to anyone who studies proteins and the endlessly fascinating relationship between their structure and function.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of circuits is the foundation on which most other courses in the electrical engineering curriculum are based. For this reason the first course in circuit analysis must be appropriate to the succeeding specializations, which may be classified into two groups. One is a specialization in electro nics, microelectronics, communications, computers etc. , or so-called low current, low-voltage engineering. The other is in power electronics, power systems, energy conversion devices etc. , or so-called high-current, high voltage engineering. It is evident that although there are many common teaching topics in the basic course of circuit analysis, there are also certain differences. Unfortunately most of the textbooks in this field are written from the 'electronic engineer's viewpoint', i. e. with the emphasis on low current systems. This brought the author to the conclusion that there is a definite disad vantage in not having a more appropriate book for the specializations in high-current, high-voltage engineering. Thus the idea for this book came into being. The major feature distinguishing this book from others on circuit analysis is in delivering the material with a very strong connection to the specializations in the field of power systems, i. e. in high-current and high voltage engineering. The author believes that this emphasis gives the reader more opportunity for a better understanding and practice of the material which is relevant for power system network analysis, and to prepare students for their further specializations.

This book explores how they interpret, negotiate, resist, and (re)create language policies in classrooms. Bridging the divide between policy and practice by analyzing their interconnectedness, it examines the negotiation of language education policies in schools around the world, focusing on educators’ central role in this complex and dynamic process. Each chapter shares findings from research conducted in specific school districts, schools, or classrooms around the world and then details how educators negotiate policy in these local contexts. Discussion questions are included in each chapter. A highlighted section provides practical suggestions and guiding principles for teachers who are negotiating language policies in their own schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume critically examines the effects of the spread of English from colonialism to the ‘New World Order’. The research explores the complex and often contradictory roles English has played in national development. Historical analyses and case studies by leading researchers in language policy studies reveal that deterministic relationships between imperial languages, such as English, and societal hierarchies are untenable, and that support of vernacular languages in education and public life can serve diverse ideologies and political agendas. Areas and countries investigated include Europe, North America, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The role of theory in language policy scholarship and practice is critically evaluated. A variety of research methodologies is used, ranging from macro-sociopolitical and structural analyses to postmodern approaches. The work collectively represents a new direction in language policy studies.

Book excerpt: This volume looks at the interactions of collaborating teachers in multilingual classrooms and how these impact on what counts as knowledge in the secondary school classroom. It also looks at how policy statements and ideologies around multilingualism position teachers and learners in particular ways. A linguistic ethnographic approach is taken in the study, which considers the discourses of whole class and small group teaching and learning. Chapters consider the relation between different languages, different pedagogues and different teacher identities in the secondary school classroom. The book documents how a policy of inclusion is played out in practice.

Book excerpt: Literacy in 3D brings together an authoritative collection of essays, each drawing on Bill Green's influential '3D' model of the cultural, critical, and operational dimensions involved in literacy, pedagogy, and practice. The book is divided into three sections, which cover the model in theory, the model in practice, and extending the model. Literacy in 3D presents a core framework for curriculum and pedagogy design within the New Literacy Studies tradition. As an up-to-date account of a long-established, overtly dynamic model, this important book explores and engages with its integrated perspectives to emphasize contemporary literacy dimensions and their interplay. It contains practical examples of application, as well as challenges and outcomes, in using the 3D model across a range of contexts and subject areas. The book is a timely and richly informed resource for all literacy educators, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers at various levels. *** "This review cannot do justice to the richness and complexity of the studies and insights offered for researchers and educators. The book offers explanations of the inception and development of the 3D model that will be of interest to literacy theorists and students....Through this book the editors and their authors convincingly provide evidence of the functionality of the 3D model as a flexible, dynamic framework for literacy research and education in the 21st century." - Australian Journal of Language and Literacy, Vol. 36, No. 3, 2013
