Book excerpt: How could the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) not only survive but even thrive, regaining the support of many Chinese citizens after the Tiananmen Square crackdown of 1989? Why has popular sentiment turned toward anti-Western nationalism despite the anti-dictatorship democratic movements of the 1980s? And why has China been more assertive toward the United States and Japan in foreign policy but relatively conciliatory toward smaller countries in conflict? Offering an explanation for these unexpected trends, Zheng Wang follows the Communist governmentÕs ideological reeducation of the public, which relentlessly portrays China as the victim of foreign imperialist bullying during Òone hundred years of humiliation.Ó By concentrating on the telling and teaching of history in todayÕs China, Wang illuminates the thinking of the young patriots who will lead this rising power in the twenty-first century. Wang visits ChinaÕs primary schools and memory sites and reads its history textbooks, arguing that ChinaÕs rise should not be viewed through a single lens, such as economics or military growth, but from a more comprehensive perspective that takes national identity and domestic discourse into account. Since it is the prime raw material for constructing ChinaÕs national identity, historical memory is the key to unlocking the inner mystery of the Chinese. From this vantage point, Wang tracks the CCPÕs use of history education to glorify the party, reestablish its legitimacy, consolidate national identity, and justify one-party rule in the post-Tiananmen and postÐCold War era. The institutionalization of this manipulated historical consciousness now directs political discourse and foreign policy, and Wang demonstrates its important role in ChinaÕs rise.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Causes for National Humiliation: A Discourse, Delivered on the Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, Recommended by the President of the United States, September 26, 1861 This question, justly considered, will bring our minds to the proper subjects of contemplation to-day, and may aid our hearts to proper feelings in view of them. The answer to this question presents itself in a two-fold light - causes arising from conflicting views and interests among the peo ple themselves, as divided into the two great sections now at strife; and causes arising from the sins of the whole nation, which have justly provoked and brought down the judg ments of God upon us, as war in all its forms, whatever may be its secondary causes, is always regarded in Scripture as a visitation of God upon nations for their offences against the principles he has laid down for their conduct. It is highly proper for us to examine the causes involved in both branches of the subject. If we can view them justly, weighing their real merits, and can be suitably affected in heart by the view, and can be led to a right conduct thereby, we may, in our worship, enter into the true spirit of the first part of our text: Offer the sacrifices of righteousness. And then, if we take a just view of the perils that are be fore this nation, and of the true source of its deliverance, as a christian people - however strong may be our reliance upon armies and munitions of war, and however earnestly we should as patriots support them, and as christians pray for their success - we shall be led to look beyond these mere means of safety, and obey the injunction of the second part of the text: Put your trust in the Lord. Joslyn Barnhart demonstrates that Germany's catastrophic reaction to humiliation at the end of World War I is part of a broader pattern: states that experience humiliating events are more likely to engage in international aggression aimed at restoring the state's image in its own eyes and in the eyes of others. Barnhart shows that these states also pursue conquest, intervene in the affairs of other states, engage in diplomatic hostility and verbal discord, and pursue advanced weaponry and other symbols of national resurgence at higher rates than non-humiliated states in similar foreign policy contexts. Her examination of how national humiliation functions at the individual level explores leaders' domestic incentives to evoke a sense of national humiliation. As a result of humiliation on this level, the effects may persist for decades, if not centuries, following the original humiliating event.
