There is increasing evidence that the nonconsumptive effects of predators play an important role in these interactions. Through a series of laboratory and field experiments, I address gaps in knowledge on the prevalence of non-consumptive effects and trophic cascades in subtidal marine systems. First, I assessed the relative importance of consumptive and non-consumptive effects of an abundant microcarnivorous fish, the señorita (Oxyjulis californica) on the grazing behavior of its prey, the seaweed limpet (Lottia insessa), and in turn, its effects on habitat loss of the foundation species, the feather boa kelp (Egregia menziesi). Non-consumptive effects of predator presence drove these interactions, which caused limpets to decrease grazing activity, reducing frond breakage and habitat loss. These same interactions were observed in a natural field environment, with ambient levels of fish presence having similar effects on kelp strength as caged fish with and without access to limpets. Through both observational and manipulative studies, I monitored grazed and ungrazed fronds of E.menziesii through time and found that limpet grazing significantly increased frond loss. My study, provides convincing evidence of a trophic cascade driven by an apparent chemically mediated cue sensed by limpets that indirectly reduces kelp habitat loss. Such interactions may have large implications for assemblages of subtidal marine organisms.

When threatened by predators, prey often change their foraging and mating behavior, presumably to maximize current and future fitness. These responses have been studied in numerous terrestrial and aquatic taxa, yet how risk affects reproductive output in marine fishes is poorly understood. To determine whether risk directly affects fitness in nature, I tested the effects of predation risk on reproductive output and behavior of the bluebanded goby, Lythrypnus dalli. During three experiments, similar populations of gobies were established on artificial reefs and predator exclusion cages were used to manipulate perceived and actual risk of predation. Reefs were assigned one of three caging treatments to alter the level of risk that gobies likely perceived from predators: large exclusion (low risk); small exclusion (no actual risk, but perceived risk); and no exclusion (actual and perceived risk). Reproductive output and behaviors of gobies were compared among risk treatments, and all gobies that remained on the reefs at the end of each experiment were recollected to assess any effects of risk and predation on survival of L. dalli. Remote video revealed that the treatments manipulated the presence and proximity of predators as intended. Gobies altered their behavior in the presence of predators, but despite this, reproductive output was similar among all risk treatments. Similar numbers of gobies were present in all treatments, but they were observed less frequently in high-risk treatments because they spent more of their time hidden within the reef. These results indicate that sublethal effects of predators did not reduce fitness of L. dalli over periods of 1-4 weeks. Based on their relatively short lifespan and duration of lifetime spawning, L. dalli may be less affected by the sublethal effects of predators than other fishes, at least in terms of reproductive output.
