Book excerpt: This perceptive work examines the relationship between child development and social welfare, exploring the interactions between children's moral and intellectual development, their relationships with parents and peers, and the socioeconomic background in which they live. Drawing on many areas of developmental psychology, the author presents an integrated approach which stresses that a child's self-perception, as well as his or her perception of the nature of parenthood and of society, form a basis for marality and achievement in adolescence and early adulthood. Siegal considers the implications of shifting patterns of parenthood in recent years--the working mother, the increasingly mobile family--and he weighs the potential influence of an interventionist developmental psychology on social welfare policy.

Book excerpt: This text is an attempt to trace out a line of development in the understanding of how things happen, from origins in infancy to mature forms in adulthood. There are two distinct but related ways in which people understand things as happening, denoted by the terms "causation" and "action". This book is concerned with both.; The central claim and organizing principle of the book is that, by the end of the second year of life, children have differentiated two core theories of how things happen. These theories deal with causation and action. The two theories have a common point of origin in the infant's experience of producing actions, but thereafter diverge, both in content and in realm of application. Once established, the core theories of causation and action never change, but form a permanent metaphysical underpinning on which subsequent developments in the understanding of how things happen are erected. The story of development is therefore largely the story of how further concepts become attached to integrated with the core theories. Although the developmental and adult literatures on causal understanding appear at first glance to have little in common, in fact this appearance is illusory, and the idea of two theories helps to bring the two literatures in contact with each other.; The book begins with a survey of the main philosophical ideas about causation and action. Following this, the possible origins of understanding in infancy are reviewed, and separate chapters then deal with the development of understanding of action and causation through childhood. This is then linked to the adult understanding of action and causation, and the literature on adult causal attribution and causal judgement is reviewed from this perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At-risk children in danger of experiencing failure in reading, face negative life consequences that may be alleviated by the inclusion of an attributional training program that would increase the possibilities of success. The present study investigated the causal attributions of students in a Success for All (SFA) school versus a traditional reading curriculum. A total of 197 children, 89 from the SFA experimental school, and 108 control children participated in this study. Data were collected through the posttest administration of the Causal Beliefs About Reading Questionnaire based on the attribution work by Ames (1978, 1981, 1984) and others. Pretest reading achievement (Woodcock, Durrell) and diagnostic measures (PPVT) from the broader study by Chambers et al. (1996) were used as covariates, since pretest causal data were not available. The correlations indicated some interesting patterns. Of significance, were the negative correlations between ability and task difficulty, and the positive correlations between ability and effort. While the ANCOVA results for the hypotheses were not significant, further ANOVA results employing ratings of children's perceptions of success in reading were significant. In particular, there was a 2-way interaction effect for the type of reading program and perceptions of success in reading on attributions to the difficulty of the task. These findings suggest important motivational and feedback techniques that should be taken into consideration by classroom teachers. The key is for teachers to use research-based teaching techniques in combination with effective attributional practices.

Book excerpt: Assessment Strategies for Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions is a collection of original contributions provided by leaders in the field who consider the theoretical and applied assessment issues related to the expanding field of cognitive-behavioral interventions. Chapters in the present volume, designed as a companion volume to an earlier text, Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions: Theory, Research, and Procedures, focus on the issues inherent in the measurement of cognitive and behavioral events and processes. The book opens with an overview of recent growth in the field. Attention is devoted to examining several goals of the new assessment endeavors, some suggestions related to the proposed methods, and certain problems inherent in cognitive-behavioral assessments. Separate chapters follow that deal directly with a variety of specific content areas. These include a conceptualization of attributions, as well as describing their measurement and speculating as to their role in both the etiology and treatment of psychological disturbance; and suggestions for assessment in clinical interviews and for using psychometric instruments and discusses belief systems and irrationality. Subsequent chapters focus on special populations and procedures.
