This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this experimental, cross-sectional study was to assess whether leaders' gender may have a differential effect on observers' causal attributions for leaders' display of vulnerable emotions. This study also examined whether leader gender and causal attributions interacted in determining observers' perceptions of leaders' competence and appropriateness following leader displays of vulnerable emotions. Differential analysis of leader gender and emotion was conducted using two-way ANOVA. Main effects for both gender and emotion were reported for 1) internal and external causality, 2) competence and 3) appropriateness, as well as any resulting interactions. The Montoya and Hayes (2017) method was utilized for testing for mediation. A within-subjects ANOVA comparing ratings of causality across all three emotional conditions determined whether evidence supported the moderation effect. Results of these analyses found no significant difference between observers' attributions of causality for female versus male leaders on any of the emotions tested. There was a significant difference between observer ratings of appropriateness for male and female leaders after an exhibition of humor such that the male leader was rated as more appropriate than the female leader, but there was no significant difference in the perceived appropriateness of male and female leader's expression of sorrow or anger. Male leaders were rated as less competent than the female leaders following the expression of sorrow. No significant differences were found between male and female leaders expressing anger or humor. The data did not support causal attribution as a mediating variable between leader displays of emotion and observer ratings of competence, when comparing ratings of appropriateness after observing leaders displaying anger and humor or anger and sorrow. There was, however, support for causal attribution as a mediating variable when comparing ratings of appropriateness after observing leaders displaying humor and sorrow. Results indicate the source of the significant moderation in this study was an interaction between attributions of causality for sorrow versus attributions of causality for anger and humor. The data in this study did not support the hypotheses that the judgments of competence and appropriateness would be differentially affected by gender-related causal attributions. While there were some observer differences in gender-related causal attributions, these did not translate into differences in judgments of competence or appropriateness for male and female leaders. These findings suggest the evaluation of leaders' competence and appropriateness is based on factors other than gender-based causal attributions. However, due to the large percentage of white women in the sample, these findings may not generalize to the general population.

Book Synopsis Attributional Styles and Gender in Weightlifting by : Yvonne B. Brett
Download or read book Attributional Styles and Gender in Weightlifting written by Yvonne B. Brett and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the causal attributions of weightlifters and whether there are differences in the way males and females attribute the outcome of their performances. In addition, it investigates whether the propsed attributional difference could be understood in terms of the individual's gender orientation. Although the results indicate no significant sex or gender differences, the qualitative data suggested some differences between the content of the attibutions of men and women. The gender orientation findings identified the need for further research in gender orientation and its impact on an athlete's percpetions of their performance.
Book Synopsis Attributions and Gender Differences in Post-breakup Adjustment by : Jennifer Elise Wilburn
Download or read book Attributions and Gender Differences in Post-breakup Adjustment written by Jennifer Elise Wilburn and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of relationship failure and adjustment has fueled the majority of research with the topic of divorce. This study attempts to replicate the findings in divorce studies on attributions and adjustment using 188 college-age premarital couples who have ended a committed romantic relationship within six weeks of assessment. Different causal attributions for relationship failure were inspected for different levels of adjustment. Adjustment was assessed by examining the variables of loneliness, depression, and alcohol use. We further examined for gender differences in adjustment by examining men and women separately. Using structural equation modeling, we analyzed adjustment at the initial time of their breakup and again several weeks later to assess how well they were adjusting over time. We found that attributions did not significantly predict adjustment for men and women together, but became closely associated with alcohol use. Specifically, individuals who reported the relationship attribution drank more alcohol. Men drank significantly more alcohol than women at both times in the assessment. In the overall adjustment examination, regardless of attributions, men appeared to have poorer adjustment than women over time. Though there were gender differences, the finding did not reach significance.
Book Synopsis Gender, Interaction, and Inequality by : Cecilia L. Ridgeway
Download or read book Gender, Interaction, and Inequality written by Cecilia L. Ridgeway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Causal explanations are essential for theory building. In focusing on causal mechanisms rather than descriptive effects, the goal of this volume is to increase our theoretical understanding of the way gender operates in interaction. Theoretical analyses of gender's effects in interaction, in turn, are necessary to understand how such effects might be implicated with individual-level and social structural-level processes in the larger system of gender inequality. Despite other differences, the contributors to this book all take what might be loosely called a "microstructural" approach to gender and interaction. All agree that individuals come to interaction with certain common, socially created beliefs, cultural meanings, experiences, and social rules. These include stereotypes about gendered activities and skills, beliefs about the status value of gender, rules for interacting in certain settings, and so on. However, as individuals apply these beliefs and rules to the specific contingent events of interaction, they combine and reshape their implications in distinctive ways that are particular to the encounter. As a result, individuals actively construct their social relations in the encounter through their interaction. The patterns of relations that develop are not completely determined or scripted in advance by the beliefs and rules of the larger society. Consequently, there is a reciprocal causal relationship between constructed patterns of interaction and larger social structural forms. The constructed patterns of social relations among a set of interactants can be thought of as micro-level social structures or, more simply, "microstructures.
