Book excerpt: Top feline behavior expert (and author of Penguin's bestselling Think Like a Cat and Cat vs. Cat) answers the 150 questions most often asked by puzzled cat owners. Even those of us who have lived with and loved our cats for decades are constantly stymied by their seemingly inexplicable acts, or have questions about why they do what they do and where they do it, and how we can get them to not do it. Here, in one complete authoritative guide, those elusive mysteries are solved. Why does my cat lick my hair? Why does the cat only want attention when I'm on the phone? How can I introduce my cat to my new dog? How can I get my cat to like my new husband?? No one knows cats like Pam Johnson Bennett, whose pioneering thirty-year career as a cat behavior consultant has changed the way cat owners and experts alike view cats. Her books are bibles, but her fans and owners still flood her website and social media platforms with questions on topics that perplex them. Catwise combines the questions that come up most often with answers to help you solve your cat's behavior problems (or head them off before they start), or simply improve the relationship you have with your cat.

Book Synopsis A Critical Introduction to the Metaphysics of Time by : Benjamin Curtis
Download or read book A Critical Introduction to the Metaphysics of Time written by Benjamin Curtis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the nature of time? Does it flow? Do the past and future exist? Drawing connections between historical and present-day questions, A Critical Introduction to the Metaphysics of Time provides an up-to-date guide to one of the most central and debated topics in contemporary metaphysics. Introducing the views and arguments of Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Newton and Leibniz, this accessible introduction covers the history of the philosophy of time from the Pre-Socratics to the beginning of the 20th Century. The historical survey presents the necessary background to understanding more recent developments, including McTaggart's 1908 argument for the unreality of time, the open future, the perdurance/endurance debate, the possibility of time travel, and the relevance of current physics to the philosophy of time. Informed by cutting-edge philosophical research, A Critical Introduction to the Metaphysics of Time evaluates influential historical arguments in the context of contemporary developments. For students looking to gain insights into how ideas within the philosophy of time have developed and better understand recent arguments, this is the ideal starting point.
Book Synopsis World Without Design by : Michael C. Rea
Download or read book World Without Design written by Michael C. Rea and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical naturalism, according to which philosophy is continuous with the natural sciences, has dominated the Western academy for well over a century; but Michael Rea claims that it is without rational foundation, and that the costs of embracing it are surprisingly high. The first part of World Without Design aims to provide a fair and historically informed characterization of naturalism. Rea then argues compellingly to the surprising conclusion that naturalists are committed to rejecting realism about material objects, materialism, and perhaps realism about other minds. This conclusion is striking, largely because naturalism is often simply identified with materialism, and the remaining two theses are ones that naturalists very typically want to endorse. Rea goes on to examine two alternative research programs: intuitionism and supernaturalism, and argues for the conclusion that intuitionism, under certain circumstances, is self-defeating. World Without Design offers a provocative challenge to philosophical orthodoxy. It will make uncomfortable reading for many philosophers.
Book Synopsis Heavenly Tree, Northern Earth by : Gerrit Lansing
Download or read book Heavenly Tree, Northern Earth written by Gerrit Lansing and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the inaugural volume of a new series of literary hardcovers from North Atlantic Books. This series will collect the important work of writers who have served as major influences upon and contributors to the cultural and psychic milieu from which North Atlantic evolved. A distinguished figure of American letters, whose work and spirit have bridged five decades of creativity, Gerrit Lansing provides a perfect launch for the series with this collected edition of his poetry, which astonishes by the variety of its poetic forms and concerns, lyrical and cosmological. It cannot easily be fitted into niches currently fashionable. Like a "seed growing secretly" (to quote a favorite poet of his, Henry Vaughan), it has influenced the American cultural underground since the late 1950s. Lansing was a friend and associate of generations of creative minds as diverse as the poet Charles Olson and the legendary filmmaker Harry Smith. Poet Robert Kelly notes that "he is the most learned among us, and the most fun." Lansing has patiently fashioned a body of work that ranges from short poems such as "The Heavenly Tree Grows Downward" and "In Northern Earth," from which this collection takes its title, to longer cycles like the alchemical serial poem "The Soluble Forest." With themes at once personal and social, erotic and esoteric, Heavenly Tree, Northern Earth manifests the creative spirit of one of the important unheralded masters of modern poetry.

This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingual translations ENGLISH into NORWEGIAN of poems by Hannie Rouweler. Translations by Jostein Sæbøe. Several themes. About a previous collection: "Lakes and Gardens contains an unusual richness of motives, ranging from family situations, childhood memories and landscape observations to passion, love, loss and loneliness. Despite these innumerable and varied glimpses from the life of a mature poet, there is no danger of disintegration of poetic style or character. All through the volume we are struck by the poet's ability to let her own distinctive features mould her visions into verses, features that are characterised by humour, sincerity, sometimes irony as well as a deep wonder at the small and big mysteries of life. The images and sceneries in many of the poems reveal the poet's practice as a painter. In the most intimate poems we sense the almost physical presence of the poet and at the same time we have a feeling that everyday words put on a deeper symbolic message." Jostein Sæbøe
