Book excerpt: Journey with the Fathers, Year C, is a notable series of helpful meditations on the Sunday gospels. It is the Greats of Christianity who speak, explaining the scriptures to you with their timeless clarity and profound wisdom. You will find this series useful whether you are meditating on the gospels, preparing a Sunday homily, or just interested in strengthening your spiritual life. This user-friendly compendium of commentaries on Lectionary C should prove valuable to all who thirst after a closer communion with God. The editor has skillfully selected appropriate commentary and sermon texts from such major patristic thinkers as Augustine, Cyril of Alexandria, John Chrysostom, Origen, and Gregory of Nyssa, as well as passages from lesser known patristic and medieval sources... The brief biographical notes following each selection will be especially helpful to the general reader." Dr. Dennis Bielfeldt Grand View College of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Des Moines, IA This fine collection of reflections on the gospel readings for Sundays will be of great value in both personal and public use. Imaginatively chosen, impeccably translated, relevant to today's world, the passages are taken from sources spanning the centuries from the third to the twentieth. They are timeless in their message and will speak to Christians of many traditions." Agatha Mary, S.P.B. Burnham Abbey, England Each Sunday Gospel is adorned with a reading from one of the early classic writers. The selection is appropriate not only for preparing homilies but also for prayerful meditation." The Bible Today A collection of homilies on the gospels for Sundays and the principal feasts which replace the Sunday celebrations. Special care has been taken in making the translations so they may be proclaimed effectively. There is a brief introduction to the life and ministry of each author included in the collection." Worship Proclaimers of the Word would do well to add Journey with the Fathers to their collections of resource material. Augustine and Irenaeus are here, but so, too, are Thomas More and John Henry Newman. All providing sound and substantial insights into the Sunday and major feast gospels for an entire yearly cycle." Rev. Joseph M. Champlin
Book Synopsis Left Behind and Loving It by : D. Mark Davis
Download or read book Left Behind and Loving It written by D. Mark Davis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Left Behind and Loving It is a cheeky critique of popular writings about the end times. Rather than presenting a steroid-buffed Jesus wrapped in an American flag and "coming again in clouds of gunfire," Left Behind and Loving It invites readers to approach some of the most controversial and scary portions of the Scriptures with the utter confidence that "God's steadfast love endures forever." Rather than asserting a hope premised on a few chosen ones escaping the world, Left Behind and Loving It argues that if it is Jesus who is to return (and not his evil twin), then the second coming has redemption written all over it. Many today cannot accept the escapist, violent, end-of-the-world scenario envisioned by "Left Behind" theology. Left Behind and Loving It invites readers not to fear but to trust in God's steadfast love and look at the finitude of the world with hope in an infinitely loving God.

Book Synopsis Commentary on Isaiah by : St. Thomas Aquinas
Download or read book Commentary on Isaiah written by St. Thomas Aquinas and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians have called the Book of Isaiah a “fifth gospel” because of its striking foretelling of the principal mysteries of the life of Jesus. But how do these prophecies of a still far-off Savior relate to the circumstances of Isaiah’s own time? St. Thomas Aquinas’s Commentary on Isaiah is believed to be his first major theological work, produced as part of his academic training as a bachelor of theology. Carefully attending to the language and structure of Isaiah’s prophecy and using Scripture to shed light on Scripture, Aquinas explains how Isaiah’s message brought comfort to Israel and pointed forward to the coming of the Christ.

Book Synopsis Thomas Aquinas on the Beatitudes by : Anton ten Klooster
Download or read book Thomas Aquinas on the Beatitudes written by Anton ten Klooster and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is happiness and how do we attain it? Saint Thomas Aquinas (ca. 1226-1274) devoted much time to these questions. In studying them he always returned to the beatitudes as they are found in Matthew 5:1-10. They function as the framework for his theology of human happiness. This study presents that theology as it comes to the fore in Aquinas? performance of his three tasks as a magister at the Parisian university: to read Scripture, to dispute theological topics, and to preach.0This study shows that Aquinas believes that the beatitudes describe a number of virtuous actions, the exercise of which is made possible by grace, specified in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. To all those observing the new law constituted by the beatitudes, a reward is promised in the form of eternal happiness. Any happiness that can be had in this life is at best an inchoate form of the reward of eternal happiness, which is described in the second part of each individual beatitude.
