It is a comprehensive discussion and analysis of the four Gospels, by some of the greatest theologians to have ever graced the Catholic Church. Aquinas compiled this opus from sermons and commentaries on the Gospels written by the early Church Fathers. He arranged their thoughts in such a way that they form a continuous commentary on each Gospel, verse-by-verse. This book will prove invaluable for serious students of Catholicism, and is not to be missed by the discerning collector. Many vintage texts such as this - particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before - are increasingly hard to come by and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Book excerpt: This is volume two of a five volume effort, by one of History’s greatest commentator's on the Gospels. This work is written for one who does have a fluid knowledge of philosophy, not alone Thomas Aquinas. What this accomplishes is to provide a modern version of the Catena Aurea in today's verbiage and related issues, while in keeping with the flow and content of the original. It is not hard to admire St. Thomas Aquinas immovably caught in the splendor of a stained-glass window; it is easy to pay tribute to his Summa Theologica as long as it remains high on a bookshelf giving character to a library. Under these circumstances, we of the twenty first century can read about them both, talk about them enthusiastically, but pretty much leave them both alone. Aquinas is one who regardless of your placement on your spiritual journey. Aquinas is the basis for so much of what we have come to regard as dogma. This work is essential to not only understanding Aquinas’s other works, but also our own journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aurea Catena Homeri, written in German by Dr. Anton Josef Kirchweger, was first printed in 1723, though it was distributed in a handwritten format prior to that time. It is said to be one of the most important books ever created giving insight into alchemy the idea that all creation, no matter what its nature, is closely interconnected, that a deeply secret connection pervades all of nature, that one thing relates to the next and things depend upon each other. In The Golden Chain of Homer, editors Gregory S. Hamilton and Philip N. Wheeler provide an English translation of Aurea Catena Homeri, complete with frequent, detailed footnotes and extensive commentary that offers a detailed analysis and insight into Kirchweger's work, considered a masterpiece of alchemical literature. The Golden Chain of Homer shows Kirchweger's book in a new, enlightening way. Through this translation, it becomes easier to understand alchemical principles and unveil the mysteries that shroud the science of alchemy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latter twentieth century and early twenty-first century has seen a revival of interest in the biblical commentary of the church fathers. Noteworthy evidence is supplied by the ongoing publication of two major patristic commentaries by Eerdmans and InterVarsity Press. During the thirteenth century the western church experienced a similar revival of interest in the church fathers, with many Eastern texts being translated from Greek to Latin for the first time, and thereby becoming available to a wider public. There was also an increasing hunger for access to the original message of Scripture as understood by early Christians, and to this, it was felt, the church fathers held the key. It was Pope Urban IV who commissioned St. Thomas to compile the 'Catena' in a bid to make readily available to the academic public an orthodox patristic commentary on the Gospels. The Oxford Movement was the catalyst for this English translation by John Henry Newman in 1841. The 'Catena' is not as original as Thomas's other writings, but manifests an intimate acquaintance with the fathers of the church and provides an excellent compliment to the modern attempts to understand how the fathers read scripture.
