Book Synopsis Flowering Plants by : Armen Takhtajan
Download or read book Flowering Plants written by Armen Takhtajan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armen Takhtajan is among the greatest authorities in the world on the evolution of plants. This book culminates almost sixty years of the scientist's research of the origin and classification of the flowering plants. It presents a continuation of Dr. Takhtajan’s earlier publications including “Systema Magnoliophytorum” (1987), (in Russian), and “Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants” (1997), (in English). In his latest book, the author presents a concise and significantly revised system of plant classification (‘Takhtajan system’) based on the most recent studies in plant morphology, embryology, phytochemistry, cytology, molecular biology and palynology. Flowering plants are divided into two classes: class Magnoliopsida (or Dicotyledons) includes 8 subclasses, 126 orders, c. 440 families, almost 10,500 genera, and no less than 195,000 species; and class Liliopsida (or Monocotyledons) includes 4 subclasses, 31 orders, 120 families, more than 3,000 genera, and about 65,000 species. This book contains a detailed description of plant orders, and descriptive keys to plant families providing characteristic features of the families and their differences.

Book Synopsis Revision of Poa L. (Poaceae, Pooideae, Poeae, Poinae) in Mexico: new records, re-evaluation of P. ruprechtii, and two new species, P. palmeri and P. wendtii by : Robert John Soreng
Download or read book Revision of Poa L. (Poaceae, Pooideae, Poeae, Poinae) in Mexico: new records, re-evaluation of P. ruprechtii, and two new species, P. palmeri and P. wendtii written by Robert John Soreng and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who knew there were so many bluegrasses in Mexico?ÿ This monographic study of the Mexican species of the large (500+ species), taxonomically complex, world-wide genus Poa, by Smithsonian researchers Robert J. Soreng and Paulÿ M. Peterson, revealed there were 23, including 2 new to science, and 2 previously unknown there.ÿ Two other narrow endemics were described only in the last 10 years. The Mexican species occur mainly in the mountains, and especially in the alpine.ÿ Most of the species occurrences in Mexico presumably reflect establishment during cooler climates of past glacial cycles. Today, several are living on the edge of extinction. Eleven natives are globally rare, or rare in Mexico. Breeding system diversity is high: asexual seed production is obligate in several and facultative in some others, one is dioecious, and some are gynomonoecious, several are perfect-flowered.ÿ At least 3 arrived by long-distance-dispersal from South America?s Andes; 2 aided by asexual reproduction, 1 by the capacity to self-fertilize.
Book Synopsis Grasses of the Great Plains by : James Stubbendieck
Download or read book Grasses of the Great Plains written by James Stubbendieck and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vast swath of prairie situated between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains, the North American Great Plains extend across ten states in the United States and three provinces in Canada. The dominant vegetation is grass—both the native species that have long thrived here and the cultivated crops such as corn, wheat, and sorghum that are the result of human agricultural activity. This comprehensive guide, written by three grass specialists, is an invaluable tool for identification of the approximately 450 species of grasses that occur on the Great Plains. In each description, the authors cover distribution, habitat, forage value, and toxicity and include a detailed black-and-white illustration of the grass as well as a range map. Intended as a reference for landowners, rangeland specialists, students, state and federal agency professionals, and nongovernment conservation organizations, Grasses of the Great Plains will serve a wide audience of users involved in and dedicated to grassland management.
Book Synopsis California Grasslands by : Mark R. Stromberg
Download or read book California Grasslands written by Mark R. Stromberg and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This highly synthetic and scholarly work brings together new and important scientific contributions by leading experts on a rich diversity of topics concerning the history, ecology, and conservation of California's endangered grasslands. The editors and authors have succeeded admirably in drawing from a great wealth of recent research to produce a widely accessible and compelling, state-of-the-art treatment of this fascinating subject. Anyone interested in Californian biodiversity or grassland ecosystems in general will find this book to be an invaluable resource and a major inspiration for further research, management, and restoration efforts."—Bruce G. Baldwin, W. L. Jepson Professor and Curator, UC Berkeley "Grasses and grasslands are among the most important elements of the California landscape. This is their book, embodying the kind of integrated view needed for all ecological communities in California. Approaches ranging across an incredibly broad spectrum -- paleontology and human history; basic science and practical management techniques; systematics, community ecology, physiology, and genetics; physical factors such as water, soil nutrients, atmospherics, and fire; biological factors such as competition, symbiosis, and grazing -- are nicely tied together due to careful editorial work. This is an indispensable reference for everyone interested in the California environment."—Brent Mishler, Director of the University & Jepson Herbaria and Professor of Integrative Biology, UC Berkeley "The structure and function of California grasslands have intrigued ecologists for decades. The editors of this volume have assembled a comprehensive set of reviews by a group of outstanding authors on the natural history, structure, management, and restoration of this economically and ecologically important ecosystem."—Scott L. Collins, Professor of Biology, University of New Mexico
Book Synopsis Plants of Oceanic Islands by : Tod F. Stuessy
Download or read book Plants of Oceanic Islands written by Tod F. Stuessy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together results from over 30 years of research on the Juan Fernández Archipelago off the coast of Chile, this book offers comprehensive coverage of the plants of these special islands. Despite its remote setting in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, the Juan Fernández Archipelago is in many ways an ideal place to ask and attempt to answer basic questions regarding the evolution of vascular plants in an oceanic island environment. By building upon a firm taxonomic base for the flora, a new level of understanding regarding evolution, biogeography, and conservation of the plants is presented. This book is an extensive investigation of the origin and evolution of the flora of an oceanic archipelago, and it serves as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars of island biology as well as for conservation biologists worldwide.
