Excerpt: ...action which I do not fear to solicit in the name of my country, believing it, moreover, to be in conformity alike with the interests the expressions in the note of M. Jules Favre, referring to the feeling of disappointment in France at the non-intervention of England during the war. The English Minister observed that the Government had decided on neutrality as the line they felt bound to adopt in a struggle which they had vainly attempted to prevent; but that they had been actuated by the most friendly feeling compatible with the impartial duties of a neutral. The Duke replied tliat France felt our conduct to be cold; that there had been a disappointment as to our non-recognition of the Republic, and at our indifference whilst France was suffering so much; but that all questions of that nature were now resolved, and that he wished to talk only of the present and the future. The Duke, in short, perceived that the policy of England, whether right or wrong, had been directed by a deeply-felt national sentiment, with which it was vain to argue. The complaint as to our non-recognition of the Republic in its provisional stage was very natural under the circumstances; but it had no basis in reason. The Republic had not the slightest claim on other Powers until it had been shown that the French themselves recognised it. As soon as that had been sufficiently proved for the purposes of diplomacy, the European Governments made due recognition of its title, according to the custom now universally followed; and one of the earliest to perform this act was the Government of England. Book excerpt: Because it lasted only seven months, the Franco-Prussian War has sometimes been ignored by historians and yet it merits study for the fact that it was the first deployment of a ruthlessly efficient and superbly organised German Army, a phenomenon that was to be seen twice more in the next 75 years. Indeed, military professionals and history students have long sought a thorough account of this conflict for the very reasons of its significance in both military development and European evolution. The war machine of the expansive Prussians used organisational strength and modern techniques to prevail over the more antiquated French and yet the battles were keenly fought and brought awesome casualties. The lessons learned by both sides, and onlookers, had a mighty impact; the emergence of a dominant German land force, a German nation and a German Empire determined the course of European and world history for a century and beyond. The story of the war is told with vigour and accuracy and will be a significant contribution to military history and to our understanding of the development of Europe as we see it today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franco-Prussian War did not end with the catastrophic French defeat at Sedan on 1 September 1870 when an entire French army surrendered, the Emperor Napoleon III was captured and his regime collapsed. The war went on for another five agonizing months, and resolved itself into a contest for Paris—for while Paris held out, France was undefeated. The story of this dramatic final phase of the war is the subject of Douglas Fermers masterly account, the sequel to his Sedan 1870. He weaves this story of military victory and defeat into a gripping narrative and it sets the extraordinary events of nearly 150 years ago in the wider context of European history.
