Book excerpt: Eamon Casey is a young man from a cattle station in Northern Australia. He is conscripted and sent to Vietnam. Wounded and mentally scarred, he returns home to find that his mother has been murdered and his inheritance, the property Conemarra has been expropriated by a shady character who had married his mother in order to gain it for himself. Disillusioned, he seeks refuge on a small island in the Torres Strait. Here, he hopes to recover and begin his life anew, but there is something going on just above the horizon that will once more plunge him into conflict. The freedom fighters in West Papua accept Chinese arms to help them rid themselves of their Indonesian masters, but they dont know that China has an ulterior motive. They want to place nuclear armed rockets on the island in order to subjugate Australia and her neighbours in order to expropriate rich mineral and agricultural resources and cheap labour. Jessica Bradley is a photo-journalist who had gone to Papua to do a story on the rebellion. She, along with others, has to flee in a small boat and is rescued by Eamon. In the boat with her is Barry McLeod, the man who killed his mother and robbed him of his inheritance. Eamon falls back on his military training to thwart the Chinese and force them to abandon the island. But the story doesnt end there. McCloud escapes from the police and flees to Europe where he has secreted most of the money. Eamon and Jessica come upon him by accident, follow him to Switzerland, and extract both the money and a confession from him before handing him over to the police. Back in Australia, they pursue the people who had conspired with McLeod in his evil deeds, securing a substantial settlement and the return of the family property. Meanwhile, both work with Jessicas family in England to expand farming operations there, leading to a happy and successful family partnership.

Book excerpt: A journalist's obsession brings her to a remote island off the California coast, home to the world's most mysterious and fearsome predators--and the strange band of surfer-scientists who follow them Susan Casey was in her living room when she first saw the great white sharks of the Farallon Islands, their dark fins swirling around a small motorboat in a documentary. These sharks were the alphas among alphas, some longer than twenty feet, and there were too many to count; even more incredible, this congregation was taking place just twenty-seven miles off the coast of San Francisco. In a matter of months, Casey was being hoisted out of the early-winter swells on a crane, up a cliff face to the barren surface of Southeast Farallon Island-dubbed by sailors in the 1850s the "devil's teeth." There she joined Scot Anderson and Peter Pyle, the two biologists who bunk down during shark season each fall in the island's one habitable building, a haunted, 135-year-old house spackled with lichen and gull guano. Two days later, she got her first glimpse of the famous, terrifying jaws up close and she was instantly hooked; her fascination soon yielded to obsession-and an invitation to return for a full season. But as Casey readied herself for the eight-week stint, she had no way of preparing for what she would find among the dangerous, forgotten islands that have banished every campaign for civilization in the past two hundred years. The Devil's Teeth is a vivid dispatch from an otherworldly outpost, a story of crossing the boundary between society and an untamed place where humans are neither wanted nor needed.

'If you never give up, anything can happen' - Casey Stoner Showing anything is possible when determination meets talent, two-time World MotoGP champion Casey Stoner shares his inspirational journey from Queensland toddler, with an extraordinary ability on a motorbike, to his decision to retire at twenty-seven with nothing left to prove. For the first time, he tells of his early family life, the development of his riding skills and why his parents decided to sell everything and travel from Australia to Europe to chase the dream and support his aim to become World Champion when he was only fourteen years old. As fearless with his opinions as he is on the racetrack, Casey includes all the highs and lows of his life so far: the real reason he left for Europe so young, his thoughts on racing as it stands today, the riders' hierarchy, the politics of racing, the importance of family, his battle with illness and why he decided to turn his back on a multimillion-dollar contract when he was still winning. And he will let us in on some of the new goals he has set for himself. Pushing the Limits is a unique and remarkable account of self-sacrifice and determination to succeed against the odds, the inspiring story of a young Australian who took on the world on his terms, his way. . . and won.

Re-exploring the Dublin of O'Casey's childhood and the political situation in the Ireland during his early life, Murray sets them against O'Casey's autobiographies in an attempt to establish 'O'Casey's Ireland'. The second half of O'Casey's life was spent mostly outside Ireland and much of his income came from the United States. Murray examines his rise as an international figure and contrasts his later, more socialist, work with his more nationalist early work." "Christopher Murray establishes O'Casey as a self-made man of letters, an irrepressible fighter, a man who combined political courage and innocence, torn between a humanist vision of life rooted in his Dublin childhood and a utopian but blinkered loyalty to the Soviet Union." "Sean O'Casey: Writer at Work reconstructs a life committed to writing as a moral endeavour. While acknowledging that much of O'Casey's work was uneven, flawed, and overambitious, Murray argues that at its best it was infused with a passion and generosity that place it among the best bodies of drama in the twentieth century."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
