It formulates a modern linguistic definition of the concept of 'circumstantial qualifier' and offers corpus-based pilot studies on circumstantial qualifiers in Pre-classical and Classical Arabic, Pre-exilic Hebrew, Modern literary Arabic and Modern spoken Gulf Arabic. With 'circumstantial clause combining' as the basic analytic concept Bo Isaksson presents a study of comparative ancient Arabic and ancient Hebrew text linguistics applied to a corpus of narrative prose texts. As a corollary Isaksson also presents a reconsideration of the so-called 'tenses' in Arabic and Hebrew. Helene Kammensjo investigates the logic behind the remarkable variation of circumstantial qualifiers (CQ) in a choice of Arabic novels from the two last decades. Her approach is to pick out a few frequent CQ constructions and do a systematic study. Maria Persson surveys the forms and functions of CQs both separately and in relation to their head clauses and discusses areas of grammaticalization and ambiguity related to CQs in Gulf Arabic dialects on the basis of texts from her own field studies.

Book excerpt: In the context of Arabic and Semitic, it is only natural to treat case and mood under one umbrella: Arab grammarians ingenuously devised the same terms for the independent case and the independent mood on the one hand, and for the dependent case and the dependent mood, respectively. Still, the main focus of these proceedings lies on case in Semitic and Afroasiatic, wherever relevant. Thereby, taking up controversial data, issues, arguments and discussion is indispensable. The volume contains contributions covering data mainly from Akkadian, Hebrew, Arabic, Ethio-Semitic, Berber, and selected Cushitic and Omotic languages. One paper investigates the diachronic development of case and the mimation in Akkadian, another discusses a number of accepted as well as a number of controversial residues of case in Biblical Hebrew and proposes suggestions of reanalysis in this context. A critical reading of chapter 17 of al-Zaggagi's 'Idah is offered as well as a summary and further development of recent discussion on the scenario of case in historical varieties of Arabic. Book excerpt: In Ancient Hebrew Periodization and the Language of the Book of Jeremiah, Aaron Hornkohl defends the diachronic approach to Biblical Hebrew and the linguistic dating of biblical texts. Applying the standard methodologies to the Masoretic version of the biblical book of Jeremiah, he seeks to date the work on the basis of its linguistic profile, determining that, though composite, Jeremiah is likely a product of the transitional time between the First and Second Temple Periods. Hornkohl also contributes to unraveling Jeremiah’s complicated literary development, arguing on the basis of language that its 'short edition', as reflected in the book’s Old Greek translation, predates that 'supplementary material' preserved in the Masoretic edition but unparalleled in the Greek. Nevertheless, he concludes that neither is written in Late Biblical Hebrew proper.
