Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since this book was first published in 1985, tremendous changes have taken place in the field of online searching. Thus a second edition was truely over due. Dr. Hedda Schulz, author of the first edition, found a most competent and renowned searcher as her co-author in the person of Dr. Ursula Georgy. The authors have undertaken an enormous task. As a result of their efforts, a convincing handbook had been written. It will reliably serve newcomers and experts alike it is an instruction manual as well as a reference book. The importance of modem information handling has been advanced in many an article, book and preface. It is therefore unnecessary to repeat the arguments here. This book can contribute to creating a deeper understanding of information handling in those persons who have not yet registered its impor tance or who are standing on the sidelines waiting sceptically. In contrast, all those people who have so far believed that you only need to connect your personal computer to a modem will be shown in a thoroughly professional way that there is a lot more to online searching than pressing keys on your keyboard. To own a palette and easel does not make you an artist. Apart from the benefit, that searchers and readers will draw from it, this book should help to eradicate the timeworn motto: the world's knowledge at your fingertips.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part I of this work focuses on the ways in which digitization projects can affect fundamental justice principles. It examines claims that technology will improve justice system efficiency and offers a model for evaluating e-justice systems that incorporates a broader range of justice system values. The emphasis is on the complicated relationship between privacy and transparency in making court records and decisions available online. Part II examines the implementation of technologies in the justice system and the challenges it comes with, focusing on four different technologies: online court information systems, e-filing, videoconferencing, and tablets for presentation and review of evidence by jurors. The authors share a measuring enthusiasm for technological advances in the courts, emphasizing that these technologies should be implemented with care to ensure the best possible outcome for access to a fair and effective justice system. Finally, Part III adopts the standpoints of sociology, political theory and legal theory to explore the complex web of values, norms, and practices that support our systems of justice, the reasons for their well-established resistance to change, and the avenues and prospects of eAccess. The chapters in this section provide a unique and valuable framework for thinking with the required sophistication about legal change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the full text of twenty-six of the thirty-one papers given at the Montreux 1989 International Chemical Information Conference in Montreux, Switzerland between 26 and 28 September 1989. The five papers omitted were due to their late completion and subsequent unavailability for incorporation in this volume. Of the twenty-six papers included, all but three were delivered to Infonortics in diskette form between 1 July and 1 August 1989; by 17 August 1989 the 310 pages of text and figures were typeset and scanned graphics inserted. By 26 September 1989 all copies were printed in England and delivered to the Montreux Congress Centre in Switzerland. The rapid and efficient process reflects creditably on all parties concerned, especially on the authors who followed assiduously the detailed instructions concerning presentation they were given. Conventional publishing is not so rapid, but conventional publishing does give time for authors to proof-read their texts, make correc tions and add material, and gives time for the publisher to index the work thoroughly and completely. The current Proceedings have not been proof-read by the authors, nor is there an index. I hope that readers will appreciate this trade-off between currency and thoroughness and will recognise some of the limitations imposed by publishing proceedings at the same time the conference is held. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical nomenclature can be a complicated subject. As a result, most works on the subject are rather dry textbooks and primarily consist of sets of instructions on how to name chemicals. This practical book proves that chemical nomenclature can be interesting, not just a `necessary evil'. Written in a lively and engaging style by experts in their particular fields, this new book provides a general discussion on why good, clear nomenclature is needed. It introduces the reader to the various forms of nomenclature without reading like a textbook. Both `systematic' and `trivial' nomenclature systems are used widely (and interchangeably) in chemistry and this new book covers both areas. For example, systematic nomenclature in both the CAS and IUPAC styles is introduced. These systems have many similarities but important differences which the chemist should be aware of. Specialized naming systems are needed for polymers and natural products and these areas are covered in separate chapters. The naming of elements is a very topical subject at the moment and so this is included to ensure a comprehensive coverage. Covering a wide range of topics in the area of nomenclature and acting as an introduction to a varied field, this book will be of interest to industrial chemists as well as students at senior undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the full text of twenty ofthe twenty-one papers given at the Montreux 1990 International Chemical Information Conference in Mon treux, Switzerland between 24 and 26 September 1990. The one paper that is omitted was not received in time for incorporation in these Proceedings. The papers reflect the diverse nature of chemical information, an information field that has usually been in the forefront of applying new technology to solving information problems. In many ways, the electronic information revolution is still in its infancy; during the Montreux conferences, we intend to chart the dynamic interaction between chemical information and new technology. One publishing problem with an information field that moves so rapidly is the constant need to make printed information available within weeks or months of it being written. The majority of papers in this volume were written during the period May - July 1990. Conventional publishing, of course, allows authors time to proof-read their texts, to make changes and corrections and allows time for the contents to be indexed extensively. Time, however, is a luxury in the case of conference proceedings in the area of chemical, pharmaceutical and patent information at the beginning of the 1990s. We hope readers will appreciate the necessary trade-off that has had to take place between text thoroughly prepared, revised, indexed and corrected; and text that is available for general readership soon after it was written.

Book excerpt: The Systematic Identification of Organic Compounds A comprehensive introduction to the identification of unknown organic compounds Identifying unknown compounds is one of the most important parts of the study of chemistry. From basic characteristics such as melting and/or boiling point to more complex data generated through cutting-edge techniques, the range of possible methods for identifying unknown organic compounds is substantial. The utility of a research reference which compiles known techniques and characteristics of possible compounds is clear. The Systematic Identification of Organic Compounds provides such a reference, designed to teach a hands-on approach in the chemistry lab. It takes readers step-by-step through the process of identifying an unknown compound and elucidating its structure from infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectra in addition to solubility characteristics, melting point, boiling point, and classification tests. The result is an essential overview for advanced chemistry students looking to understand this exciting area of laboratory work. Readers of the ninth edition of The Systematic Identification of Organic Compounds will also find: A detailed chapter on safety, personal protection equipment, chemical storage, safety data sheets, and other safety concerns New NMR, IR, and mass spectra with detailed explanations on interpretation Questions at the end of each chapter designed to facilitate and reinforce progression, keyed to a companion website for instructors Tables of known compounds including data relevant for identification Companion website with structural problems from experimental data for students to practice how to reason and solve The Systematic Identification of Organic Compounds is a useful reference for advanced undergraduates and graduate students studying organic chemistry, organic spectroscopy, and related subjects.
