Book Synopsis Carvel Ice Cream by : Lauren McGowen
Download or read book Carvel Ice Cream written by Lauren McGowen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When an unassuming, wide-eyed, young Greek immigrant arrived in America in 1910, the world did not yet know that this boy named Tom Carvel would grow up to be an inventor, an innovator, and, ultimately, an American icon. Holding a host of jobs, from drummer to mechanic, Carvel's relentless entrepreneurial spirit led him down a path less traveled. At 26 years old, Carvel met his future wife, Agnes Stewart. He borrowed $15 from her and began selling ice cream out of the back of his truck. What started as an old truck plugged into a pottery store is now more than 500 franchised locations throughout the nation and abroad and is one of the best loved and most recognized names in the industry. Fulfilling the American dream, Carvel is credited for patenting machinery, coining the "buy one get one" coupon, starring in his own commercials, and being the "father of franchising."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Carvel is a historical novel by the American novelist Winston Churchill, presented interestingly in the form of memoirs of an eighteenth-century stubborn and quick-tempered young man, Richard Carvel. He grew up with his grandfather, a wealthy man from Maryland and faithful to King George. But Richard's sympathies are with the people of the colonies who are unhappy about England's behavior towards them. It is set partly in Maryland and partly in London, England, during the American revolutionary era. First published in 1899 this eight-volume novel was a great hit immediately and sold around two million copies. Churchill used beautiful and easy-to-read language throughout. It's an entertaining novel filled with family feuds, romantic interests, abduction, pirates, the elevated lifestyle in London, and influential historical characters both British and American like the first president of the U.S.A, George Washington, and Whig politician Horace Walpole. The characters are lifelike; they have their fair share of flaws but show excellent character development till the end.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed New York Times bestseller Welcome, welcome to Caraval--Stephanie Garber's sweeping tale of the unbreakable bond between two sisters. It's the closest you'll ever find to magic in this world... Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over. But this year, Scarlett's long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season's Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever. Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . beware of getting swept too far away. Book excerpt: Known by mobsters as “the man who couldn’t be bought,” Brendan Byrne led New Jersey into a new era when he won the state’s gubernatorial election by a landslide in the wake of political corruption scandals. A former prosecutor and judge, Byrne was soon condemned as “one-term Byrne,” the inept politician who few thought would risk the humiliation of standing for a second term. Yet Byrne surprised both friend and foe alike by pulling off the state’s most remarkable political comeback, winning re-election and leaving a legacy of preserving the vast resources of the Pinelands, enacting the state’s first income tax and comprehensive school financing reform, developing the Meadowlands, approving casino gambling in Atlantic City, and initiating strong environmental controls to combat pollution.
