Book excerpt: A practical guide to the definitive treatment for patients with carotid artery disease who otherwise run a major risk of life-threatening or debilitating strokes. Multi-centre trials in both Europe and the United States have shown conclusively that carotid endarterectomy significantly reduces the risk of a life-threatening or debilitating stroke. Given these positive results, it will surely follow that more of these procedures will be carried out. Carotid Endarterectomy: a practical guide provides the surgeon with a comprehensive and practical guide to this type of operation. The editors have drawn together an impressive list of contributors from both the United Kingdom and the United States and operative procedures are described by leading exponents in the field. Assuming little prior knowledge, the editors begin by outlining the basic principles, as well as advising on patient selection and diagnosis. Pre- and post-operative investigations and patient care are also covered, ensuring that this book is a landmark text in its area. Profusely illustrated with both colour and black and white photographs, Carotid Endarterectomy: a practical guide is an essential purchase for vascular surgeons as well as general surgeons with an interest in vascular surgery.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficiency of carotid surgery on an asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis and its superiority to conservative treatment was clearly demonstrated in the ACAS study. The stroke risk over a five year follow-up period could be reduced by 55 % and the combined stroke and mortality rate was shown to be a mere 2. 3 %. The efficacy of surgical treatment in also reducing stroke rates in the case of a symptomatic carotid stenosis was proven in the NASCET and ECTS prospective randomized studies. Of extreme importance in these procedures is, however, precise quality control and quality assessment. This is presently a topic of tremendous interest in reconstructive vascular surgery and is constantly being discussed in specialist circles and beyond. Documentation and the possibility of accurate reconstruction of the intraoperative situation are in high demand. Perioperative monitoring of neurological function, particularly the monitoring during carotid surgery, are the aspects underlying constant revision and reassessment to ensure quality control and assurance of a negligeable mortality and morbidity rate. The aim of this book is to discuss the presently available perioperative control methods, examinations, and quality assessments, and the critical consideration of these. We would like to express our thanks to all authors who helped achieve the sense and aim of this book. A special word of thanks to Dr. Kerstin Simons (assistant surgeon) for assisting in the editing of the numerous presentations in this book. Particularly we thank Dr.

Book excerpt: This book uses a case-based approach to provide current information on a range of medical issues with the goal of enhancing preoperative evaluation and optimization. It meets the market need for a resource that concisely encapsulates current knowledge on the medical management of specific topics in a setting relevant to the preoperative clinic. In so doing the book aims to improve patient care and safety, enhance resource use, facilitate appropriate and timely management of preexisting conditions and diminish patient concerns. Organized into sections according to body system, each section consists of chapters delineating a specific disorder. Each chapter starts with a clinical vignette followed by a question-and-answer style investigation of the relevant issues. These questions attempt to address commonly encountered clinical dilemmas where opinion often differs between, and occasionally within, medical sub-specialties. Expertly written chapters are also supplemented by a number of chapters which address special considerations such as the frail patient and chronic opioid use. Preoperative Assessment: A Case-Based Approach is an invaluable reference for all physicians involved in preoperative assessment including anesthesiologists, surgeons, internists, family doctors and residents in these fields. Nurse practitioners and other allied heath professionals involved in preoperative evaluation may also find this a book a valuable and timely resource.
