Book Synopsis Germplasm Accession Lists by : Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture- IICA.
Download or read book Germplasm Accession Lists written by Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture- IICA. and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This regional project was thus requested to prepare a list of the Tropical Fruit Germplasm available in the wider Caribbean and beyond, and make it accessible to the interested institutions. In March 1994, the First Programming Meeting of the Caribbean Committee for the Magagement of Plant Genetic Resources (CMPGR) met in Puerto Rico and recommended that IICA finalize and distribute the Fruit Germplasm Accession List already available. Although most of the information presented here was gathered in 1993, it took quite a long time to put it together, since the formats used to record the list of germplasm differed greatly according to the countries, the instutions and the groups of fruits. This is the first. It is a preliminary document which needs to be completed and updated. Initially, we had planned to distribute it on diskettes but we realized that this would have been premature. We have to think about developing a specific interactive database, easy to access and use in any kind of computer environment, and easy to update. This will take some time, but we may be able to start before the end of the year. Finally, we would like to thank all the institutions which provided us with the information. We need more, and we need to update the existing document. We would like also to receive your comments and suggestions about this work. This is critical to the updating process.
Book Synopsis Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories by : Nigel Dudley
Download or read book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories written by Nigel Dudley and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUCN's Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify protected areas according to their management objectives, are today accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording, and classifying protected areas. They are recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result, they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation. These guidelines provide as much clarity as possible regarding the meaning and application of the Categories. They describe the definition of the Categories and discuss application in particular biomes and management approaches.

Book Synopsis Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook by : World Bank
Download or read book Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook' provides an up-to-date understanding of gender issues and a rich compilation of compelling evidence of good practices and lessons learned to guide practitioners in integrating gender dimensions into agricultural projects and programs. It is serves as a tool for: guidance; showcasing key principles in integrating gender into projects; stimulating the imagination of practitioners to apply lessons learned, experiences, and innovations to the design of future support and investment in the agriculture sector. The Sourcebook draws on a wide range of experience from World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and other donor agencies, governments, institutions, and groups active in agricultural development. The Sourcebook looks at: access to and control of assets; access to markets, information and organization; and capacity to manage risk and vulnerability through a gender lens. There are 16 modules covering themes of cross-cutting importance for agriculture with strong gender dimensions (Policy, Public Administration and Governance; Agricultural Innovation and Education; Food Security; Markets; Rural Finance; Rural Infrastructure; Water; Land; Labor; Natural Resource Management; and Disaster and Post-Conflict Management) and specific subsectors in agriculture (Crops, Livestock, Forestry, and Fisheries). A separate module on Monitoring and Evaluation is included, responding to the need to track implementation and development impact. Each module contains three different sub-units: (1) A Module Overview gives a broad introduction to the topic and provides a summary of major development issues in the sector and rationale of looking at gender dimension; (2) Thematic Notes provide a brief and technically sound guide in gender integration in selected themes with lessons learned, guidelines, checklists, organizing principles, key questions, and key performance indicators; and (3) Innovative Activity Profiles describe the design and innovative features of recent and exciting projects and activities that have been implemented or are ongoing.
Book Synopsis Enduring Seeds by : Gary Paul Nabhan
Download or read book Enduring Seeds written by Gary Paul Nabhan and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As biological diversity continues to shrink at an alarming rate, the loss of plant species poses a threat seemingly less visible than the loss of animals but in many ways more critical. In this book, one of America's leading ethnobotanists warns about our loss of natural vegetation and plant diversity while providing insights into traditional Native agricultural practices in the Americas. Gary Paul Nabhan here reveals the rich diversity of plants found in tropical forests and their contribution to modern crops, then tells how this diversity is being lost to agriculture and lumbering. He then relates "local parables" of Native American agriculture—from wild rice in the Great Lakes region to wild gourds in Florida—that convey the urgency of this situation and demonstrate the need for saving the seeds of endangered plants. Nabhan stresses the need for maintaining a wide gene pool, not only for the survival of these species but also for the preservation of genetic strains that can help scientists breed more resilient varieties of other plants. Enduring Seeds is a book that no one concerned with our environment can afford to ignore. It clearly shows us that, as agribusiness increasingly limits the food on our table, a richer harvest can be had by preserving ancient ways. This edition features a new foreword by Miguel Altieri, one of today's leading spokesmen for sustainable agriculture and the preservation of indigenous farming methods.
