Book excerpt: This qualitative study examines deeply the career trajectories of 13 women of color administrators at the dean, vice president, and president levels in the California community college (ccc) system. The study focuses particular attention on the specific opportunities and challenges that some of these women have encountered on their leadership career journeys by analyzing the following research question: How have women of color administrators navigated their career trajectories in the California Community College system? In addition, a subquestion asks, what strategies and sources of support have women of color in the California Community College system used to overcome multiple obstacles in their professional lives as administrators? In addition to describing the context of a post-affirmative action/Proposition 209 environment that does not allow race to be a sole or primary factor in ccc hiring decisions, the study reviews the relevant literature on the subjects of career development for women of color and the role of women of color in academia. The study uses as a lens for data analysis a theoretical framework that includes gender considerations (feminism/womanism), racialization (Critical Race Theory), and the intersectionality of these perspectives as a way to highlight the social constructions of race and gender that emerges from the study's data. The study uses snowball sampling to identify 13 women of color community college administrators who serve in dean, vice president, and president positions. The interview group consisted of five African Americans, five Latinas, and three Asian Americans. Each individual was asked about her education, career history, community college experience, strategies, and sources for support. The first theme that emerged, the "Traditionally Untraditional Career Path," indicated that some participants encountered racism, sexism, and cultural differences that affected their journeys. Given that these women of color have all been affected by their race, class, and gender in their careers, this situation rendered their careers inherently nontraditional. The second theme that emerged was "Strategic Connections: Strategies and Sources of Support" which revealed several elements, such as the mentoring and networking that women of color in the ccc system have used to navigate their professional lives as administrators. The third theme, "Leading as a Gendered and Racialized Administrator," highlighted the gendered and racialized positioning of women of color as administrators and emerged from some participants' experiences with overt racism, racial microaggressions, and the pressure of assimilation to a White male culture and leadership style. Book excerpt: Studies have sounded the alarm concerning the impending void of leadership that community colleges will face in the 21st century. One concern is that the pool of applicants from the traditional leadership pathway of existing community college faculty members has decreased dramatically in the past decade. This study explored faculty perceptions of the administration positions in California community colleges and their desire and willingness to step into these roles. The study also looked at the impact of the underlying issues associated with the motivation for life-work balance on the likelihood of community college faculty to apply for administrative positions. This study was conducted through a mixed-method design involving quantitative and qualitative data collection. A survey was sent to all tenured and tenure-track faculty at community colleges in San Diego County, California. There were 341 participants who completed the survey, yielding a response rate of 22.7%. The first research question sought to explore faculty's perceptions of the administration positions at California community colleges and their desire to step into those roles. Three themes emerged in analyzing the responses of why faculty consider going into administration: (1) improve the system or college; make a difference, (2) personal growth and challenge, and (3) salary and/or benefits. In addition, five main themes emerged from reasons why faculty would not consider jumping into administration: (1) workload, stress, and lack of flexibility for family time; (2) lack of job satisfaction due to bureaucracy, incompetent colleagues, or system; (3) love of teaching and profession; (4) lack of job security; and (5) going to the "dark" side. The second research question sought to explore to what extent motivators for life-work balance affect the decision of California community college faculty to leap to administration. The motivators for life-work balance do influence the faculty in the decision to jump into administration; however, there was no significant difference between Generation X and the baby boom generation's belief in achieving the balance. The study concludes with recommendations to community college administrators, board of trustees and faculty.

Book excerpt: Women are now playing an important role in community colleges as students, faculty, staff, administrators, and presidents; but despite their increasing numbers, inequalities exist between women and men in various roles within these institutions (Drake, 2008). According to Dean (2009) and Eagly (2007), higher education institutions have maintained a male-dominated culture in which women remain underrepresented in academic leadership. But, leadership within higher education exists at various levels throughout the institution (Ummersen, 2009). Therefore, the purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to examine females serving at the senior-level CFO and CAO administrative positions in the NCCCS in order to develop an understanding of how the workplace environment, mentoring, and professional development have affected their advancement. The research participants were female CFOs and CAOs with more than two years of experience serving in their present positions in the NCCCS. Data were gathered from five CFOs and five CAOs in the NCCCS. This study's results concluded that the workplace environment has dramatically changed and now offers more opportunities for females seeking advancement. In addition, the workplace environment was ranked the most important component in terms of advancement for females CFOs and CAOs. The experiences gained in the workplace are valuable resources. Professional development was ranked second by the CFOs and CAOs. Additional educational degrees and certificated credentials were explained as needed for promotions. Finally, the evidence revealed mentoring as the least important and not a necessity for advancement. This study contained various implications for females seeking advancement into the CFO and CAO positions. The study concluded with recommendations for future research.
