Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to understand the process through which Black male collegians make decisions about their intended career choice. That is, what actors, factors, or conditions shape their within-college career-related decisions (e.g., major choice, out-of-class involvement) that influence their career path/choice? The main research questions that this study addressed: 1. What do Black male collegians report as important influences on their intended career choice? 2. How do these important influences shape Black male collegians' career-related decisions in college? Black male collegians at three public universities in a Midwestern state participated in this study. Information was collected through a demographic form and a semi-structured interview. Grounded theory methods were used to guide data collection and analysis. Trustworthiness of the data collected was ensured through multiple methods of data collection, member checking, and use of a research partner to limit potential bias as a result of my experiences and perspectives that relate to this study.

Book excerpt: My research focused on the relationship between career development and the different facets of racism that presents challenges in the world of academia. The social landscape of society was torn as a result of the deaths of Travon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Grey and Eric Garner. Public opinion has varied on the causes of the deaths of many individuals in the African American community. As the author of this study I felt compelled to highlight the strength and perseverance of minorities in a college environment. Upon the completion of my study I realized that I was chronicling myself.

Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that influence the college choice decisions of African American male first-generation college students. This study employed a strength-based approach, instead of the more traditional narrative centered around values, cultural norms, and deficits. This research study utilized a single-case study design and a qualitative research methodology. The study examined the college choice influences experienced by five African American males attending a mid-sized college in the Midwest to develop a more nuanced understanding of the strengths they exhibited that allow them to successfully navigate impoverished conditions at home, in the neighborhood, and in the school. Data collected from one-on-one in-depth interviews, a brief survey, along with each participant’s high school and college academic transcripts were analyzed to highlight emerging themes associated with the research questions. In-depth interviews served as the primary source of data collection, and six questions guided the study including the following: (a) How do first-generation college students who are African American males develop and nurture their aspiration to enroll in college? (b) In what ways, do family members influence the college choice decision-making process of African American males who are first-generation college students? (c) How do peers influence the college choice decision-making process of African American males who are first-generation college students? (d) How do African American males who are first-generation experience the college search stage? (e) What factors influence the college enrollment decision of African American males? (f) How do African American males make meaning of their experience with the college choice decision-making process?

Book excerpt: The career development and career decision-making needs of African-American males have generated much inquiry. Two year colleges currently serve as the predominant point of entry for many African-American male students seeking baccalaureate degrees. However, the transition to and eventual success at the four-year institution is often met with challenges. The inability to choose a major that may lead to a desired career has the potential to serve as a barrier for some students. From the lens of social cognitive career theory, this qualitative study was conducted to examine the experiences of undecided, African-American male transfer students at a large, four-year metropolitan university. Upon analyzing data from the interviews, themes were developed according to three research questions. Themes that offered insight into major selection process included: (a) choosing a major that offered potential job stability/security, (b) experiences related to academic ability, and (c) experiences with gender relative to career decision-making. Participation in the Direct Connect program was the minor theme found related to experiences encountered in the transfer process that influence major and/or career development. Themes related to the development of career decision-making self-efficacy included: (a) choosing careers believed to be consistent with one's person, (b) indecision while at the community college, (c) engagement in practical experiences, (d) solving problems, (e) meeting with advisors and counselors at the community college, and (e) involvement in extracurricular activities.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examines Black men's graduate school choice process enrolled in a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree program at a historically Black college or university (HBCU) medical school. While there is foundational literature regarding graduate school decision-making (Olson & King, 1985), the literature on graduate school choice is limited. Recent work of English and Umbach's (2016) four-layer graduate school choice conceptual model, adapted from Perna's (2006) college choice model, serves as a theoretical framework and a basis throughout the literature landscape of graduate school choice. Furthermore, when exploring the medical school choice, there is little current literature that examines the choice process for Black men in attending HBCU medical schools. The decreasing presence of Black men in medical school commands attention to graduate school choice for these students. Through this study, a critical gap in medical education scholarly work will be filled. The purpose of this research is to ascertain the school choice process for Black men enrolled in an MD program at an HBCU medical school, using in-depth individual interviews with these students. Extracting from English and Umbach's (2016) four-layer graduate school choice conceptual model and McDonough et al. (1997) Black college choice model, this study expects for Black men's medical school choice to be determined by habitus, the context of school and community, the context of higher education, and context of social, economic, and policy. This research provides an essential perspective into Black male students' medical school choice process by investigating these influences. This study advances the knowledge of a budding body of research associated with graduate school choice and assists HBCU medical schools in identifying the factors attributed to Black male enrollment in HBCU medical schools. Having this knowledge empowers HBCU medical schools to better prepare for Black male medical students' recruitment and retention.
