Book Synopsis Preaching Prophetic Care by : Phillis Isabella Sheppard
Download or read book Preaching Prophetic Care written by Phillis Isabella Sheppard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preachers often think of prophetic preaching in the caricature of the prophet as the lonely outsider confronting the congregation, often angrily, with the congregation’s complicity in social injustice and with a bracing call for repentance. The twenty-seven essays and sermons in this book offer a different perspective by viewing prophetic preaching specifically—and ministry, practical theology, and theological education more broadly—as pastoral care for the community in prophetic perspective. Such preaching does indeed bring a critical theological analysis of justice concerns to the center of the sermon, but in such a way as to invite the congregation to consider how the move toward justice is a pastoral move— that is, a move that seeks to build up community. Rather than contributing to the polarization so rampant in today’s social world, the preacher seeks to help the congregation build bridges along which concern for justice can travel. The contributions honor the work of the late Dale Andrews, a scholar of preaching and practical theology at the Divinity School, Vanderbilt University, whose seminal work inspires the notions of prophetic care and building bridges to justice. Download or read book Faithful Preaching written by Tony Merida and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a preacher? What is preaching? Pastor Tony Merida asks these foundational questions to arrive at this overview of his widely anticipated book, Faithful Preaching: “Faithful preaching is the responsible, passionate, and authentic declaration of the Christ-exalting Scriptures, by the power of the Spirit, for the glory of the Triune God. Expository preaching is the best approach for accurately explaining and applying God’s Word, and for maintaining a God-centered focus in preaching. It also offers wonderful spiritual benefits to both the preacher and congregation. To be faithful expositors today, we must avoid the common problems associated with expository preaching such as boredom, irrelevancy, and Christless messages. Faithful preachers will usher the people through the text passionately and authentically, pointing them to Christ.”

Download or read book Deep Preaching written by J. Kent Edwards and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Kent Edwards recalls a story that late pastor J. Vernon McGee told about seeing children in South Africa playing a game of marbles in the dust with real diamonds. The precious stones were being handled with no regard for their true worth. Edwards fears the same thing happens today when preachers offer Scriptural truth to listeners without being completely overwhelmed by its greatness themselves in the process. Deep Preaching is his call to "rethink" preaching. Edwards helps preachers learn to preach the word in ways that will powerfully change the lives of hearers. He contends that sermons "need not settle comfortably on the lives of the listeners like dust on a coffee table." He encourages preachers to join him in casting off the lines that moor their ministries to the status-quo and make every effort to steer their preaching out of the "comfortable shallows." He urges them to preach deep sermons rather than superficial ones, moving "beyond the yawn-inspiring to the awe-inspiring, from the trite to the transforming."

Book Synopsis Lament-Driven Preaching by : Eliana Ah-Rum Ku
Download or read book Lament-Driven Preaching written by Eliana Ah-Rum Ku and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges Christian communities to engage in lament—a mode of existence characterized by impassioned expression, witnessing, and personal or social protest in the face of evil and injustice, reflecting a profound yearning for God’s saving presence. Divine lament responds to, and expresses solidarity with, human suffering, unveiling multiple facets of God’s image and demonstrating a profound sense of divine compassion. Drawing on the Book of Lamentations, Korean concepts related to suffering (han and hanpuri), the Paschal Triduum narratives, and recent homiletic discourses on suffering, the author investigates how complex issues related to grief and hope can be addressed in preaching without diminishing the harsh reality of affliction. Designed to assist preachers, this book encourages a more intentional approach to addressing suffering, specifically by advocating for lament as a transitional space between affliction and hope. Furthermore, readers are invited to contemplate the significance of the church, which, within a world in decline, embodies the body of Christ, manifesting both the demise and resurrection of God.

Book Synopsis Prayer and Preaching by : Karl Barth
Download or read book Prayer and Preaching written by Karl Barth and published by . This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a Preface, Professor James S. Stewart, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, writes: `This little book demonstrates wonderfully Barth's characteristic union of simplicity and profundity. Certainly there is in these pages a Word from the Lord for the revitalizing of the Church.' The book is based on two series of informal lectures, published in the USA as Prayer and The Preaching of the Gospel. The first series studied Christian prayer, and particularly the Lord's Prayer as interpreted by Luther and Calvin. The second series ventured into the field of practical theology, discussing the essential characteristics of preaching and how to prepare a sermon. Here one who is mighty in the pulpit shows preachers that they must trust in Scripture itself; and lays bare his own attitude to the humbling but possible task of proclaiming the Word of God. Even Christians not responsible for composing sermons are responsible for hearing God through them, and they, too, will be helped by these intimately vpiiitual pages. Specimen sermons ore added.
Book Synopsis From Pew to Pulpit by : Clifton Floyd Guthrie
Download or read book From Pew to Pulpit written by Clifton Floyd Guthrie and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A down-to-earth, practical introduction to the ins and outs of preaching for lay preachers, bivocational pastors, and others newly arrived in the pulpit. Recent years have seen a considerable increase in the amount of financial resources required to support a full-time pastor in the local congregation. In addition, large numbers of full-time, seminary trained clergy are retiring, without commensurate numbers of new clergy able to take their place. As a result of these trends, a large number of lay preachers and bivocational pastors have assumed the principal responsibility for filling the pulpit week by week in local churches. Most of these individuals, observes Clifton Guthrie, can draw on a wealth of life experiences, as well as strong intuitive skills in knowing what makes a good sermon, having listened to them much of their lives. What they often don't bring to the pulpit, however, is specific, detailed instruction in the how-tos of preaching. That is precisely what this brief, practical guide to preaching has to offer. Written with the needs of those for whom preaching is not their sole or primary occupation in mind, it begins by emphasizing what every preacher brings to the pulpit: an idea of what makes a sermon particularly moving or memorable to them. From there the book moves into short chapters on choosing an appropriate biblical text or sermon topic, learning how to listen to one's first impressions of what a text means, moving from text or topic to the sermon itself while keeping the listeners needs firmly in mind, making thorough and engaging use of stories in the sermon, and delivering with passion and conviction. The book concludes with helpful suggestions for resources, including Bibles, commentaries, other print resources and websites.
