It should be possible for the data to be easily entered into the database-structure and afterwards also easily read, corrected and processed. The later analysis of data from such a database is greatly enhanced by the availability of special query languages and statistical analysis programs, not only for serial items but also for large combinations of data. Query languages, such as SQL (Structured Query Language) developed especially for these purposes, make databases easily accessible, also to researchers who may not be very well versed in computer programming. The cardiological/medical clinician and researcher of today is of necessity confronted more and more with computer-based data storage. Interest is of course focused primarily on the clinical use of such databases more than on the technical design itself, except for some very specific, personalized applications. For the latter approach, there are at present many software packages commercially available, especially designed for use in the personal computer environment. This book is comprised out of a number of contributions by various authors with differing backgrounds and from many different countries. The editors, being a cardiologist and an information scientist, have strived to achieve an equilibrium between these two fields. The chapters in this book form a cross-section of the many approaches to database design and implementation in the area of cardiology.

Book excerpt: Many noninvasive examination methods of the heart have not held out against the invasive methods, which modern cardiac therapy, surgically or with catheterization, requires. They have disappeared completely or are only used by isolated groups of researchers. However, there is an obvious tendency to apply the invasive procedures as the last diagnostic possibility. In the attempt to select clinically relevant methods, the expert authors of this book demonstrate that echocardiography, expanded with contrast and Doppler, has been developed into one of the most important noninvasive methods. The results with tissue characterization show that the possibilities of this method have not yet been fully explored. Nuclear procedures are widely used, although they should only be applied in direct connection with clinical cardiology. The new lead methods of the ecg, such as ecg-mapping, show that standard electrocardiography of electrical functions is not yet fully exploited. The rapidly developing method of computer tomography is also being applied to cardiology. Since nuclear magnetic resonance requires extensive equipment con struction, its future is as yet unsure. Of course, a book like this does not intend to treat the subject of noninvasive cardiology in extensive detail. Established methods like standard electrocardio graphy, phonocardiography and sphygmography are not discussed. The aim of this book is rather to demonstrate the trend of present developments in the field. They cover an enormous range of frequencies with periods from the order of milliseconds up to some years. They are described by many disciplines and are investigated usually in the context of the physiology of the respective function or organ. The importance given to the research on rhythmicity is quite different in different systems. In some cases where the functional significance is obvious rhythms are at the center of interest, as in the case of respiration or locomotion. In other fields they are considered more or less as interesting epiphenomena or at best as indicators without essential functional significance, as in the case of cardiovascular or EEG rhythms. Recently the study of physiological rhythms has attracted growing interest in several fields, especially with respect to rhythm research in humans and its rapidly spreading applications in basic behavioral research, and as a diagnostic tool in clinical medicine. This development was favored by two methodological and conceptual ad vances: on the one hand, the availability of non-invasive methods of continu ous recording of physiological parameters and their computer-assisted evaluation, and on the other, the rapid development of theoretical analyses, for example, the understanding of dynamic systems, the generation of coordinated macroscopic pro cesses in systems comprising many single elements, and the mathematical tools for treating nonlinear oscillators and their mutual coupling.
