Book excerpt: Cet ouvrage, en s'appuyant sur des faits, défend l'idée que l'apprentissage du langage par les enfants ne se limite pas à l'apprentissage de la grammaire. Il faut y ajouter l'apprentissage de la réalisation d'actes de langage, comme exprimer une croyance, faire faire quelque chose à quelqu'un, exprimer un état psychologique, s'engager pour l'avenir, etc. Un acte de langage, par exemple demander quelque chose à quelqu'un, est réalisé dans des situations sociales différentes par des énoncés différents. Les enfants ont donc à apprendre qu'un énoncé parfaitement correct et pertinent, pour exprimer une intention dans une situation donnée, devient totalement incorrect ou étrange dans une autre situation. La variation des énoncés, en fonction de la situation sociale, est considérée comme un moyen d'adaptation lors de la communication interpersonnelle. D'un point de vue théorique, cette position est soutenue à travers la convergence de psycholinguistiques pragmatiques, comme celle de Searle et de théories du développement, comme celle de Vygotski et de Bruner. Sur le plan méthodologique, l'utilisation de situations contrôlées, proches de situations sociales quotidiennes, permet d'apporter des éléments montrant l'importance de la mise en relation entre énoncé et situation sociale lors de l'acquisition du langage. Enfin, l'ouvrage rappelle que si des interrogations à propos du langage comme quels sons ?, quels mots ?, dans quel ordre ?, pour dire quoi ? sont importantes il ne faut pas oublier de poser la question pour faire quoi ?. La réponse est le fil qui peut nous guider dans le labyrinthe des structures linguistiques.
