Book excerpt: L'objectif principal de ce travail est l'etude par microscopie electronique en transmission conventionnelle (associee a la technique du champ faible) et par microscopie electronique in situ, sous recuit, des mecanismes d'accommodation de dislocations extrinseques dans des joints de grains s'ecartant de la singularite. Ces processus jouent un role important dans la deformation a chaud des materiaux. Les experiences ont ete realisees sur des joints provenant de bicristaux 3 111, 11 311 et 11 332 de nickel elabores par solidification progressive. L'etude des processus d'accommodation necessite la connaissance prealable de la structure d'equilibre du joint de grains. Cette structure est connue pour les joints 3 111 et 11 311 mais pas pour le joint 11 332. Une premiere etape de ce travail a donc ete d'etudier par microscopie electronique a haute resolution la structure atomique du joint 11 332. Les resultats montrent que : - la structure theorique du joint 11 332 n'a ete observee que dans un echantillon proche du germe bicristallin. - dans la plupart des cas, le joint de grains se met parallele a des facettes asymetriques. - en general, le joint 11 332 ne presente pas d'ordre a longue distance mais un ordre a courte distance permettant de detecter des dislocations extrinseques discretes. Les observations en microscopie in situ sous recuit montrent, dans les joints 3 111 et 11 311, l'incorporation dans la structure d'equilibre du joint de dislocations extrinseques inclinees par rapport au reseau intrinseques. Dans les joints proches de 11 332, l'etalement du contraste des dislocations extrinseques, observe en champ faible, semble plus correspondre a une delocalisation du cur de la dislocation qu'a une decomposition en un grand nombre de dislocations de petits vecteurs de burgers. Ces resultats posent le probleme de la distinction entre un joint de caractere vraiment general en fonction de tous les degres de liberte geometriques et un joint qui conserve un singularite meme s'il presente un degre de coincidence eleve

Nous avons ainsi étudié les mécanismes de formation et la morphologie de l' oxyde, précipités de MgO ou bandes d'oxydes parallèles à la surface lors de cette reaction dans les alliages Ag-Mg. Les techniques principales d'investigations ont été la microscopie electronique en Transmission Conventionnelle (METC) et Haute Résolution (METHR), Spectrométrie de pertes d'énergie des électrons (EELS), la Diffraction de rayons X la Microscope électronique à balayage (MEB) et la Spectrométrie de rayons X en dispersion d énergie (EDS). Nous avons mis en évidence, pour la première fois, l'existence de deux types de précipitation : inter et intragranulaire dans ce système. De plus, nous avons montré que le meilleur moyen d obtenir des interfaces métal/oxyde bien définies, passe par la formation de précipités cohérents et leur croissance. On obtient ainsi des précipités de forme octaédrique présentant des plans d' accolement (111) avec la matrice. L'analyse chimique par EELS montre l' existence des liaisons de type Ag-O-Mg à l'interface...

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed.
