Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story of vendetta and intrigue, triumph and tragedy, exile and repatriation, this book recounts the interwoven microhistories of Count Girolamo Della Torre, a feudal lord with a castle and other properties in the Friuli, and Giulia Bembo, grand-niece of Cardinal Pietro Bembo and daughter of Gian Matteo Bembo, a powerful Venetian senator with a distinguished career in service to the Venetian Republic. Their marriage in the mid-sixteenth century might be regarded as emblematic of the Venetian experience, with the metropole at the center of a fragmented empire: a Terraferma nobleman and the daughter of a Venetian senator, who raised their family in far off Crete in the stato da mar, in Venice itself, and in the Friuli and the Veneto in the stato da terra. The fortunes and misfortunes of the nine surviving Della Torre children and their descendants, tracked through the end of the Republic in 1797, are likewise emblematic of a change in feudal culture from clan solidarity to individualism and intrafamily strife, and ultimately, redemption. Despite the efforts by both the Della Torre and the Bembo families to preserve the patrimony through a succession of male heirs, the last survivor in the paternal bloodline of each was a daughter. This epic tale highlights the role of women in creating family networks and opens a precious window into a contentious period in which Venetian republican values clash with the deeply rooted feudal traditions of honor and blood feuds of the mainland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other cities on water, Tokyo and Venice are characterised by intrinsic fragility, resulting from the combined work of the continuous emergence of technological, economic, social, and environmental forces, which affect the urban structure and landscape. Their tangible and intangible (material and immaterial) heritage can play a fundamental role in both maintaining their peculiar maritime identity and defining a future vision for the city. Accordingly, this volume focuses on how the rediscovery of water, from both architectural and cultural points of view, as well as the preservation of the historical and local character of the use of water, can contribute to new forms of resilience. The contributions from scholars, experts, and practitioners in various disciplines – from the social sciences and humanities to architecture and urban planning – that are brought together in this volume help to clarify the basic importance of maintaining and preserving the distinctive identity of two paradigmatic cases of cities on water.

Book excerpt: "This is a book of 43 black-and-white photographs of Venice, seen as an atmospheric, haunting city of muted light and soft focus. Gotfryd took these pictures on misty November dawnings that present us with an eerie, empty landscape. We see a woman, sometimes two, dressed in flowing dark coats, black gloves and hats, roaming the depopulated streets and cafes of the early morning. There's more Du Maurier than Canaletto in the damp pavements, crumbling walls and deserted canals of this Venice. Gotfryd explains in an introduction that a recurring dream, of the loneliness of the human condition, inspired/compelled him to create this elegant, illustrated dirge."--Publisher's Weekly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing portrait of the dramatic life of writer and intellectual Mary McCarthy. From her Partisan Review days to her controversial success as the author of The Group, to an epic libel battle with Lillian Hellman, Mary McCarthy brought a nineteenth-century scope and drama to her emblematic twentieth-century life. Dubbed by Time as "quite possibly the cleverest woman America has ever produced," McCarthy moved in a circle of ferociously sharp-tongued intellectuals—all of whom had plenty to say about this diamond in their midst. Frances Kiernan's biography does justice to one of the most controversial American intellectuals of the twentieth century. With interviews from dozens of McCarthy's friends, former lovers, literary and political comrades-in-arms, awestruck admirers, amused observers, and bitter adversaries, Seeing Mary Plain is rich in ironic judgment and eloquent testimony. A Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2000 and a Washington Post Book World "Rave".
