For almost ninety years, the biennial men's golf competition has been an important symbol of the game, knitting together the sporting cultures of the U.S., the UK, and continental Europe, and inspiring an intense rivalry among professional golfers and a passionate following across the globe. In his original exploration of the world of the Ryder Cup, Richard Gillis explores what it takes to win this coveted trophy. Accustomed to playing for and winning large sums of money, the twelve players on each side are paid nothing for this competition. Even more, in what is a singularly individual sport, fierce competitors such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, or Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia, must form and act as a team. Through his probing and insightful analysis, having consulted leadership gurus, team building experts, and sports psychologists, Gillis has written a book that every fan of golf will want to read as the 2014 Ryder Cup unfolds.

Book Synopsis The Captain and the Glory by : Dave Eggers
Download or read book The Captain and the Glory written by Dave Eggers and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A savage satire of the United States in the throes of insanity, this blisteringly funny novel tells the story of a noble ship, the Glory, and the loud, clownish, and foul Captain who steers it to the brink of disaster. When the decorated Captain of a great ship descends the gangplank for the final time, a new leader, a man with a yellow feather in his hair, vows to step forward. Though he has no experience, no knowledge of nautical navigation or maritime law, and though he has often remarked he doesn't much like boats, he solemnly swears to shake things up. Together with his band of petty thieves and confidence men known as the Upskirt Boys, the Captain thrills his passengers, writing his dreams and notions on the cafeteria wipe-away board, boasting of his exemplary anatomy, devouring cheeseburgers, and tossing overboard anyone who displeases him. Until one day a famous pirate, long feared by passengers of the Glory but revered by the Captain for how phenomenally masculine he looked without a shirt while riding a horse, appears on the horizon . . . Absurd, hilarious, and all too recognizable, The Captain and the Glory is a wicked farce of contemporary America only Dave Eggers could dream up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africans of all races remember the moment when Neil Tovey raised the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 1996, with Nelson Mandela at his side wearing his number 9 jersey. It still represents South Africa’s greatest success in international football. In his long-awaited autobiography, Tovey tells his fascinating life story, describing his modest upbringing in Durban, his entry to a mainly black sport in a deeply segregated 1980s South Africa, and his time as captain of Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana. He recalls his introduction to ‘muti’ rituals by team members and his growing popularity among Chiefs supporters, who nicknamed him Mokoko (boss chicken). Tovey also writes about his experiences as a coach and as technical director of the South African Football Association (SAFA), and shares his insights about the state of the sport today. He talks frankly about his family life and about surviving two heart attacks, and gives insights into leadership and success. This book will appeal to all football fans, but it is also a fascinating story of a man who has lived a truly South African life.
Book Synopsis Captain "Hell Roaring" Mike Healy by : Dennis L. Noble
Download or read book Captain "Hell Roaring" Mike Healy written by Dennis L. Noble and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Coast Guard’s great heroes and the secret he kept hidden "This is a book of adventure that tells how one man shaped the Alaskan frontier at a crucial time in American history."--Vincent William Patton, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, retired "Diligent research and precise writing reveal the realities of race relations in nineteenth-century America, as well as the dangers, loneliness, and complex relationships of life at sea in that era."--Bernard C. Nalty, author of Strength for the Fight: A History of Black Americans in the Military In the late 1880s, many lives in northern and western maritime Alaska rested in the capable hands of Michael A. Healy (1839-1904), through his service to the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service. Healy arrested lawbreakers, put down mutinies aboard merchant ships, fought the smuggling of illegal liquor and firearms, rescued shipwrecked sailors from a harsh and unforgiving environment, brought medical aid to isolated villages, prevented the wholesale slaughter of marine wildlife, and explored unknown waters and lands. Captain Healy's dramatic feats in the far north were so widely reported that a New York newspaper once declared him the "most famous man in America." But Healy hid a secret that contributed to his legacy as a lonely, tragic figure. In 1896, Healy was brought to trial on charges ranging from conduct unbecoming an officer to endangerment of his vessel for reason of intoxication. As punishment, he was put ashore on half pay with no command and dropped to the bottom of the Captain's list. Eventually, he again rose to his former high position in the service by the time of his death in 1904. Sixty-seven years later, in 1971, the U.S. Coast Guard learned that Healy was born a slave in Georgia who ran away to sea at age fifteen and spent the rest of his life passing for white. This is the rare biography that encompasses both sea adventure and the height of human achievement against all odds.

Book Synopsis CAPTAIN BLACK MARK by : Theodore I. Armstrong
Download or read book CAPTAIN BLACK MARK written by Theodore I. Armstrong and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story told through the eyes of an Officer who served twenty-two months aboard the LST. The ship was scheduled for a six-month tour in the Mediterranean. On January 7, 1952, the ship sailed into a devastating storm, and six hours later, they were losing cargo overboard. In addition to the loss of cargo, the ship is plagued with a navigator threatened with failure to carry out a direct order. In Malta, the LST hits two water barges and one British LCM. Two crewmen were fighting in Naples return to the ship, where one stabs the other; the LST collides with the refueling tanker; two crewmen fighting aboard ship and one threatens the Exec; forty crewmen end up fighting on the main deck; and a duty officer nearly falls overboard. Finally, the ship is beached in Terceria with a large hole in the bottom of its hull. As if that’s not enough, the Captain and Exec bring lady friends aboard the ship; the crew attempts to sail without the Captain and Exec and end up sailing into a force 3 hurricane. Captain Black Mark is the story of all these things. As incredible as it sounds, is it any wonder that the captain develops irrational fixations that his superiors were aware of everything that was happening and that it was these things that prevented him from being promoted.
